Oh an one more thing every player that played PS has said there is nothing like PS and the gameplay is the best out there. So all you mmorpg players have fun spending hours leveling up and not playing the game.
Well the good news is, now that server populations are low, one player can really have an effect on the game world I just resubscribed to planetside this month, and its such a great game, its really fun! I remember why people left, and Im already starting to feel the same. Its funny... Planetside's gameplay is more interesting and players have more of an effect on the game world than almost all mmorpgs, yet I feel more bored than in WoW or EQ2. I shouldnt but I do. I guess its just because I am more of a rpger than a fps gamer. The Planetside forums arent in the greatest state right now; not because of lack of players but because of the way they behave. They are even more rude than on mmorpg.com, and no offense to those reading this because its not necessarily you but the posters at mmorpg.com arent exactly the most polite people on the net Maybe it just feels like they are rude/childish in comparison to the pirates of the burning seas forum, where I spend most my time these days.
pfft fucking newb hes a fucking newb hes complaining say were fucking rude wtf? newb
anyway on a more serious note. beeing on the forums myself alot, the negativity is mainly due to the stupidity of the team. there bringing out content on a server called werner that is rumbling from internally. its becoming annoying to play on werner at any of place besides the caves due to the drops in fps in heated fights. tbh, its worth upgrading the servers before bringing out new content and varients.
I'm no computer expert but I fail to see how server issues can cause a drop in FPS. Sure it can cause packet loss and latency problems, but if you actual FPS are dropping that is due to problems and issues with your system. My current system runs it with never a drop in FPS but my old AMD/ATI system had fairly frequent issues with heat, texture bugs, and just hard crashes. The engine definatly has some issues with the AMD and/or ATI cards.
HOwever I don't think that has much to do with their server stability, someone inform me if I am incorrect on this matter.
I'm one of those that participated in beta and played off and on since then (currently off). Why are people so anxious to see this game die? So they can thump their chest and say "SEE, I told you so!" If there are only 3 happy subscribers left, and Sony decides to keep it going, who are you to say "OMGz, shut it down!" Yes, I agree it can use a facelift after all these years, and personally, I'm putting my money on Huxley, and hope it will be the "new and improved" PlanetSide. But geez, let people have their fun and play what they want.
This game had by far the greatest MMO gaming experiences for me. No other game gave me the feelings and experiences this one did.
I remember awesome bridge battles, unbelieveably chaotic base battles that would rage on for what seemed like forever. Some small team would finally break through and get to blow the gen, but a crack repair team would get it back up in time to prolong the struggle. It was all fun to me, even the things that people say "killed" Planetside were still a blast for me. I personally liked the BFRs, both attacking them and driving them. The Flail was tons 'o fun as well. If I had to state one negative, that was the actual battles in the caves of Core Combat. Very, very rarely I would be involved in an interesting cave battle, but I could probably count those times on one hand.
The great thing about this game was, you could take on a role based on your mood for that day. If I felt like a lone wolf that day, I would break out my cloaker. Lobbing grenedes at the enemy while sitting in a tree cloaked always raised my spirits There was no rush like being cloaked and taking a router pad down to the basement of a base you have been trying to take. Turns a total stalemate into a very exciting victory. If I felt like being a tank pilot I could do that. If I wanted to play mechanic and repair everything in site to help out a team, I could do that. There was nothing like the feeling of being in a totally organized Outfit, and having everyone drop from 3 or 4 full Galaxy transports onto a base. It is simply an awesome game, which has never been equaled in a MMO. There were games like Tribes and that Team Forttress mod from Half Life (?) that were similar, but not on an MMO scale. (and World War 2 online just didn't do it for me) PlanetSide did it right.
I remember reading about the concepts of it in Computer Gaming World, way back when they were merely talking about developing it. I was thinking, they could never pull something like this off, it was simply too good to be true. But my god, when it came out, it was the best thing ever. You mean you could be a foot soldier, an aircraft pilot, or a ground vehicle driver..all in the same game?!?! Say it ain't so!
I've often wondered why this MMO game style didn't progress into other genres. I always imagined a PlanetSide type game in say a modern army type setting, or even a World War 2 type setting done right. Like I said, I'm banking on Huxley to recapture those feelings. Tabula Rasa looks very good too and worth checking out, but from what I read, is not going to be a true FPS combat system.

The server (in all mmo's) can affect your FPS.

Kinda figured they would. Only a few thousand ppl still play at best; it was hovering around 10K when I left about 2 years ago. The forums are dead. Fodderside is ending. Jesus it's sad. I wish the suckers still left playing this game would realize they're being milked and up and leave. SOE will only pull the plug when they begin to take a significant loss. But even a 1,000 suckers is enough to keep the wheels on this joke turning after all the server downgrades and the complete lack of any dedicated staff to it. Occasionally someone working on another project will give PlanetSide minor attention in the form of a carrot on a stick. Give me a fucking break.
im not sure i understand the point of this topic.
You havent played in 2 years? So why do you even care if someone else is playing the game and having a good time?
Explain this to me as well:"SOE will only pull the plug when they begin to take a significant loss." How does this differ from ANY company in the real world? Not just an mmo company either.Any company.
Of course a product is either changed or discontinued when it becomes unprofitable. You make it sound as if SOE is incapable of doing so.This is just smart business.
With that 1 sentence you answered your own question as to why they dont "pull the plug".I mean really why the hell is EQ still going? Why do they continually update it and still make expansions?
Sounds to me like yet another player who has been forced to play games made by SOE.My god when will they ever stop putting the gun to our heads?

They are being milked, but not for the reason you think... Sony is now charging more, and that's why.
However, does anyone know if the balance issue is working now? I left the day I went in to see vanue outnumber NC and TR COMBINED on my server... it was a good time to say balance no longer exists and good bye.
I mostly (90%) play on emerald so I cannot comment on the others. On emerald the pops vary on who is on top but they are never more than 4-5 % off each other. I have noticed that TR on Werner gets owned bad nearly every day and that just sucks.
This thread has more alts than a good game of hide and seek in PS.. Seriously, whoever you are; it's time to tell your mother to give you a good beating, for your own sake.
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW... It all sucked.
BTW, how many Alts do you have here on MMORPG.com? I count 5 in this thread.

As much as I would hate to agree with Glockin he is right on that point. PlanetSide's basic principles in where great but still lacked a lot in my opinion. Such as having urban combat and a stronger sense of community. If a developer did better with these two areas I think it would be a big hit. And most of all they shouldn't use CSHD of PS's CoF system since it doesn't make for the best gaming experience. Hell even putting in some sort of cities where you log in would be a good idea just be the equivalent to PS's sanc.
The fact is that even the FPS that have or are the be released are not MMO.
Planetside was 4 years old on the 20th May, I have subbed and de-subbed a lot over the last 4 years but I am sick to death of MMORPGs.
MMORPGs have so flooded the market that if I see another elf or dwarf I am going to scream.
At least with PS I get to go blast the crap out of something and can log in and out as I like. WoW raiding means being online from 7.30pm until midnight 5 days a week on the top guilds, been there done that crap and have the 2 stone to shed to prove it.
Until they release an MMOFPS that can even touch PS it will be here until they switch off the last server.
Even when they reduce it to one server (Emerald at a guess) you will see a revival as it will have the numbers on one server not seen since 2004, what a blast that will be.
SOE nearly got it right with PS, Planetside 2 if it had been developed had the possibility to be awesome.
BTW, how many Alts do you have here on MMORPG.com? I count 5 in this thread.
I don't keep count. I make a new one every time I get banned here; which is basically every 3-5 threads I post in. And yes it's a tattoo; it's still on my arm- and it still brings me fond memories of when I was just a sucker like you. But the honeymoon is over bloodworth- it's been over a while now. The future of MMOFPS is dim- there's many reasons. MMORPG fanbois and development teams poking their noses where they don't belong- and PlanetSide's financial track record scaring off outside developers who come from areas that follow the natural path of gaming evolution... i.e. FPS developers... the ones who will truely pioneer the genre... instead of leaving it hung out to dry like SOE has done to PlanetSide going on 4 years now.
Ultima Online was made by the folks who made the Ultima series right? An MMORPG made by folks who made RPGs for years. So why is it that MMOFPS is not being made by those who made FPS games for years? Why is MMORPG poking it's nose in business in which it does belong?
If SOE had the guts to do the right thing and pull the plug on PlanetSide; I guarantee you- you'd see outside interest in MMOFPS sping up almost immediately. What other game has been the flagship of a new genre; attracting over 300,000 subscribers in 18 months- to be followed by 4 years of silence? No clones? No market growth? No competition?
MMOFPS has had the worst launch in history. It's the influence of the MMORPG world's fault- it's SOE's fault- and it's PlanetSide's fault. PlanetSide's continued existence only serves two purposes: To remind developers; and more importantly- their financial backers- of the abysmal failure of the development of this genre; and to reinforce that influence from the world of MMORPGs has a stranglehold on the genre.
Call me when one of these so-called upcoming "MMOFPS" games shows a trailer/teaser with 400+ people across frontlines with multicolored tracer fire flying between them looking like the 4th of July- because that's what the next REAL mmofps game is going to look like. All these upcoming "MMOFPS" games are posers trying to stand out from a saturated MMORPG market.
How am i a sucker if i still enjoy the game and have fun? How is it being left to rot if they are adding new guns, vehicles, and content? Sure, 07 was slim, but the developers changed around allot then. *shrug*. PS still have a large player base, and is still great fun, and they are releasing content and patches about every 3 weeks now.
The problem is, it doesn’t live up to your view of what a MMOFPS SHOUD BE, but that’s ok... But that’s no reason to bash a game.
90% of what you keep saying a MMOFPS should be, IS planetside. Most of this dram FPS you speak about is influenced by planetside.
If you wish to keep blaming everyone, and saying your right, Then make the game, Write up a design document, or shut up with your PS hate
Its been profitable and fun for 4 years now.
Thanks.

This doesn't make any sense at all. You think if SOE pulled the plug on PlanetSide, it would suddenly make future MMOFPS games more attractive to game publishers? What kind of sense does that make? Whether the game shuts down tomorrow or a year from now, it's not going to change the fact that the game was not a huge success. If SOE killed the game tomorrow do you think somehow investors would forget it ever existed?
If PlanetSIde gets pulled off life support and dies- anyone coming into the MMOFPS market then would be the only real game in town; so no matter what you can't lose. As long as PlanetSide lives there is competition and in competition someone wins and someone else loses. It's real simple math, no long winded explanation needed.
Twisted logic? As long as PlanetSide has been online, 4 years and beyond- there has not been a single new MMOFPS title. Not one, and not a single one in development. I'll repeat that last bit- there aren't even any new MMOFPS titles in development! Everyone claiming their game is going to be an MMOFPS is either blatantly lying, doing so only to distinguish themselves from 50 billion other MMORPG games, (Plays like a shooter for toddlers from Fisher-Price ala Tabula Rasa) or has yet to provide evidence that combat will take place on a "massive" scale. (Being nothing but a glorified BF2 "in-game server browser" ala Huxley.)
There's a few thousand of you, school's out, and out of desperation SOE has reactivated ALL accounts for 30 days free... Do NOT get your hopes up, PlanetSide will NEVER recover, because SOE has demonstrated since launch that they are NOT willing to invest in it.
They throw you suckers a bone once every several months; a new toy or two that most of you lose interest with in about a week... Then you all go back to pretending the actual gameplay is still fun for several months; until the next little gimmick that a few SOE employees from other departments/projects worked on in their spare time gets passed off as "development."
Planetside is alive because it is a REALLY good and popular addition in the Station Access pass. It is a main reason people have Station Access (Or was, up until they raised the price of it) and if removed fromt he Access, will cause a huge drop in Access subscribers.
Now... You cant figure that out... a really simple basic concept... And you call others dumb?!
I reallly really reallly like the cone of fire system in PS but I know a lot of hardcore FPS players said PS sucked because of the CoF thing. I think they just didnt want to pay monthly and they felt intimidated by PS though, . The cone of fire thing solved a lot of problems that first person shooters have I think... Like how snipers are so rampant, and how theres very little reason to crouch or to stand still in most FPS games and how most FPS you just hold down your button to fire and point. I love crouching with my guass in PS and firing in burst, I wouldnt want it any other way.

Planetside is alive because it is a REALLY good and popular addition in the Station Access pass. It is a main reason people have Station Access (Or was, up until they raised the price of it) and if removed fromt he Access, will cause a huge drop in Access subscribers.
