Calling them Voice Over Talent is too good for them. Sounds like they hired the secretary to do the voice overs and did it all in-house. Good voice overs are in EQ2, they hired true professionals.
Ahem, I hate to add to the bonfire but I do believe that the "Voice Over" talent......sucks.
Flame on...
Nothing to flame about. You are 100% correct. The male voice (only one for dozens of males) is probably the worse voice over I have heard in a modern PC game. I mean, it's really bad.
No emotion. He sounds like they grabbed a coder from the next cubicle over and said "Hey Jeff I want you to say ""Hey Adventurer, I need your help."""
The voice always reminded me of this guy
ohmygawd....I just realized this guy's name is Jeff too! lol

I hate voice overs, I even hate the ones in LoTRO. EQII's were tolerable but even they got old pretty fast. In my opinion the time and money could be spent better else where in development.

True. EQ2 did have some great voice overs. Christopher Lee as Lucan D'Lere? Total awesomeness. And as much as some folks around here might hate the game, World of Warcraft has some great voice overs as well.
Anyone ever play Ultima 9? (speaking of bad voice acting)
but ya, voiceovers can be annoying. The only game I think was done well was WoW. Single player games, Planescape probably had the best voice acting that I can remember.. er.. that or Duke Nukem ;P
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
I think the best voice acting game Ive seen in a recent game was probably Star Trek Legacies. The game was sorta bad but the voice acting was great (I mean after all the actors were all the real Captains in Star Trek: Enterprise, ToS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager)
The worse, no doubt, Vanguard.
Then a lot of stuff in between lol

You obviously have not heard Butterbur or Gandolph in LoTRO. I love the game but the voice overs suck. Some are darn priceless though like when the dude is tied up in the dwarf starter instance and when you click him he says " How can I be of assistance?" Here the dude is trussed up to a pole, tied hand and foot. I bugged it, dunno if they changed it or not.

Duke Nukem's one-liners were better when Bruce Campbell said them.
Sorry...just a bit of shameless Evil Dead fangirling on my part. Hehe.
Some of the best voice overs I ever heard was also one of the first ever in game that I remember. Star Trek:25th Anniversary edition on FLOPPY!!!! Took 25 floppies and 9 hours to install (just for the voice overs). Yes 9 freakin hours. I even called their tech support to ask about it and they said that was normal. Was well worth it though. This was before CD's were the norm and only a few rare games were on CD's at the time.
Yeah well I think vanguard is decent but when it comes to voice overs Terrible! Its much worse than simply having random people doing the voice overs... I reckon I could do a much better job than most of them. Hell, I could probably do better with the female voice overs too using AV voice changing software All the female voices I've heard so far sounds like theyve found that fat ugly emo bitch that every one of us have met sometime in our lives and absolutely loathe.

Yup fully agree voice over do suck in Vanguard, but like some others say there are some funny once around, but most of it is really bad.
Dunno about the comment flame on by the OP, i think finaly there is a debat of things really happening in Vanguard which is how we should discus it instead of some poeple bringing beta 2 news like it is current news.
Yeah, the voice "acting" blows. And blows hard. Far and away the worst of it has to be the goblin combat grunts/squeals, though. They all sound like David Spade getting beat up by a 6 year old.
Though, part of the reason the voice acting in most games sucks is due in no small part to the fact that the writing sucks far worse than the voice acting. Patrick Stewart may have a great voice, but when he's reading lines that come off like they were written by an SNL intern... it's still gonna sound horrid.
I thought the voice acting in EQ2 was bad until I played Vanguard - it's seriously an all new low in quality and effort. It's like a grabbed random people from the street & payed em peanuts to do the job. It's sounds incredibly mechanical & uninspired. Vulmane voices anyone? Just OMG. The horror. Same with the Kojani and well...all of it. The female laugh is really stupid sounding and its like they used bad voice recording equipment because it doesn't sound very high quality either.
Yea' you are all right i'm sure of it ~!! voiceovers, sounds, and annimations are drearily underdone. Awful~!! But to be fair they discussed it on their old original forums. If i remember correctly sigil admitted that they would need a considerable budget allocated for that and that they would revisit if they could get money set aside for it later.
They are probably overwhelmed ALOT at the beggining here, and probably emergency managing fixes and features and prioritizing but i would'nt be surprised to eventually see their newly earned money being spent on things like better filled out teams more for voiceovers, sounds, and animations.. storyline world lore, coorador content, first person viewing, UI refinement, and performance TO GET and KEEP market share ??? Eh ?
If they don't they'll be cooked and branded as a bland mmorpg, because when it comes to the REWARD CENTERS of MY BRAIN i reAAAlly require.. appropriate REWARDING SOUNDS, VOICES, ANIMATIONS and VISUALS to be pleased with a game. Talking about the professionalism as well as the polish !!
Everyone flip their coins.. can they do it ??? not sure ? maybe ? You're guess is as good a mine :}
I love Vanguard, but don't like the voice-acting. However, I don't know if a big investment in voice-acting would help or annoy. I was really impressed by all the voice-acting in EQ2. Well done, and many, many NPCs had voices. However, after awhile, even though it was very well done, it greatly annoyed me.
Im sure one of the "actors" is the one who did the voice of Sand in NWN2. Personally I think he has an awesome voice and I smile everytime I hear it coming from the mouth of a Dark Elf NPC
