So i got the high res

face30face30 Member UncommonPosts: 193

Have been playing since early beta 2 and finally just bought the pre-order box to upgrade the graphics. I was playing LOTRO beta in between Vanguard and WOW:TBC and was a little turned off of my gaming experience with Lotro because of the bland graphics. As I value a quality game with a great story line I always find myself in this day and age to turn myself from games where the graphics just arent lively and fluent. So after a lengthy install and huge patch with the high res client all I can say is WOW, and i don't mean that other game. I can play on ultra high with my rig.

2.8 intel

1.5g ram

7600gs AGP, sadly purchased rig right before pci-express hit the market

I play on ultra high with an occasional studder in a battle, but I am simply in love with the graphics, very crisp, colorful, and lively. Add that to a great story line and we have ourselves a promising game. Sure the game is a little dumbed down with the ease of some things early on, but really I am way to old and have far more important things like career and family to take up my time then to search endlessly for quests or sift through a huge world. The world is a bit small at the moment but has just grown and i hear it would grow vastly.

To conclude things, I just wanted to throw this out there because i see so many complain about the graphics and I once felt the same. I certainly don't anymore. Great game and I would recommend it to the casual as well as the hardcore gamers alike, if for nothing to see a true story line in a game for once.

I agree 100%, thank you for your post.

This game is simply stunning with the high res textures. Alive, vibrant and full of detail.

Add that to the storyline and great feeling of being a part of the world, and I can honestly say they have a winner here.

I'll be here for a loooooooong time, that's for sure :)

I have my pre-order disk, but how do I turn on the High Definition graphics?
  • idindoitidindoit Member Posts: 3
I just installed from my preorder disk last night. I just booted the computer, stuck the dvd in and waited for the option to install to appear. It took about 20 minutes to install all of the files and then the 10k+ patch ran for another hour or so. As soon as it finished and I restarted the client I logged in and entered Rivendell. Wow. I'm only running an x1600 pro, but the between the beta2 client and the preorder client is amazing. Rivendell and environs are beautiful. Can't wait to see it on a better video card.

Install from the preorder disk, update thru the launcher and when you start the game, select either very high or ultra high settings.  Be prepared to be amazed. :)

The HiRes graphics are just incredible!

Is it just the textures that are at a higher resolution? Or does the terrain also get some more polygons? Because I find the terrain in the beta abit to lowpoly for my taste.

really ? , compared to Lineage 2 or shadowbane , I thought the ground looked pretty sharp without the hi res textures....

I went and grabbed a pre-order box from Best Buy, it was right on their shelves. It was 10 dollars and came with the DvD which installs the game with the option of high-res textures, and a 2 sided paper map and a keyboard layout card.

I think some other vendors are doing it with just a shrinkwrapped DvD.

Best Buy doesn;t actually pre-order it for you though, you just go grab a box when they come in and show them your receipt for the 10$ off. So I will probably go buy the CE box instead when it comes out :)

I don't know how more polygons in terrain makes much difference, i always thought it was textures that did the trick there.

I can say however, once you install the hi res textures, the terrain is vastly improved. In fact, you will notice the terrain the most, although textures on character models ( armor etc ) are better as well.

    You won't be dissapointed.

    SCREENSHOTS PLEASE! :D

I've been enjoying the beta for a few months now and I'm picking up the pre-order after work today hopefully.  How are the items you get with the pre-order? Are they something you'll discard or are they actually really useful?  Does only ONE of your characters get them or do they all get access?

Do you get a buddy key with the pre-order?  I hope so buddy keys are a brilliant marketing tactic and I want to get a friend to try it later on.

The textures look quite sharp yes. But the polygon count on the terrain is not very high. Something that specially makes areas like cliffs or mountains look very boxy , edgy and well lowpoly. The higher the polygon count, the smoother the terrain looks.

There is a ring with 3 agi and a cloak, err i forget the stats, but they will be usefull till around lvl 15ish, every character you create gets them to start with.

    Not sure on buddy keys.

Here are a couple screens i took last

Funny thing was i logged in to take screens at one point, but it was all raining and cloudy so i had to wait for the stormy weather to clear the area before i took these nice shots :)

The higher the polygon count, the smoother the terrain looks. Once dx10 gets on a mass scale , you will see areas start to pop.  Think it is a smart choice to not over use bump mapping and high poly's because of the added effects dx10 will offer developers. Personally think a games that went with overly bump mapped terrains will suffer a lot greater when dx10 becomes the mainstream.

Also keep in mind the Ai they are using is pretty state of the art for gaming, specially mmo's, which is a solid trade off for lower poly's

    Excellent shots, Allegria :)

Everytime I log into the game or see screenshots, I really am amazed at how beautiful LOTRO is.  Call me a (hmmm... what are we called) Ringboi (?), but I do think Turbine has done an amazing job with the environment.

    The water blows my mind!

If you don't mind JonMichael, I'll just quote you. Couldn't have said it any better or truer myself!

Allegria - Thank you. Absolutely beautiful shots there. You really captured the feel of the game with some still shots, which is tough to do usually.

Well if you get your pre-order at a brick and mortar store ( best buy etc ) then you will get the hi res textures on a dvd that you can install and use for your open beta time.

However if you pre order online you wont get the hi-res textures until you get your release software.

Thank you for the screens and item info! After visiting a few shops I was able to pick up a pre-order for a friend and I at $5 a pop.  I reserved a Collectors Edition for myself... not yet certain what will come with it the guy said they haven't gotten the specifics yet.  Either way, I'm installing the DVD with high res now and the update is takin a good 2 hours now but I can't wait to play.

    Thanks again!
