Mythos detailed, will be free (Good news)

guascoguasco Member UncommonPosts: 68

MORPG from Flagship's Seattle studio will be free to download, free to play; engine based on technology powering Hellgate: London's multiplayer.

Flagship has not mentioned how it will make revenue off the game, but seeing as how Mythos is essentially a test of the multiplayer technology of its other game--Hellgate: London--profits may not come from gamers.

The game is set in the land of Uld, where players choose between three races--Humans, Elves, Gremlins--and explore. The game will have a familiar feel to the dungeon crawler Diablo, which is fitting as many members of Flagship previously worked on the classic series. Most of the dungeons will be instanced, meaning that they will be randomized to give each party a unique adventure.

Mythos creative director and Flagship Studios founding member Phil Shenk said in a statement that the Flagship team was "very impressed" with Baldree's work after seeing the Diablo-esque Fate at E3 2005. Shenk was the lead character artist on Diablo II, and Flagship Studios was formed by a number of employees from Diablo developer Blizzard North.

Mythos will be available only through digital distribution, and will be released in North America by PingO in 2007.

doesn't look all that impressive.  at least not from the screenshots or description :-)  what's so good about it?

it's a dungeon crawl, and who doesn't want to do one of those once in awhile.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I get to try it tonight. It looks very polished, so maybe it will give me what I wanted from Dungeon Runners.

Mythos is still in Alpha testing. For those of you not familiar with the makers, they also made Fate. This is an offline Diablo type clone. Mythos is the multiplayer (MMO??) version that they have been working on for a while.

I would expect it to be similar to dungeon runners, but with slightly better graphics. I cant say how the game plays (as I have not played it). It should be interesting to compare the two.

I didn't know that. Since they were made by different companies, I didn;t even bother looking until you mentioned it. The project director for Mythos is Travis Baldree, who was also the lead designer for Fate.

If this plays like an online, multiplayer version of Fate, I'm going to love it. I have a blast playing Fate.

I don't think Flagship Seattle, the substudio of Flagship which is making Mythos, has any link to the Wildtanget studio which made fate, aside from Baldree.  I believe everybody else has been pulled from other places in the industry.

Diablo 2 was already released. But, I may give it a try.

Two reasons I have zero desire to play it:

    1. Its free.

This means either they had to skimp horribly on things (apparently the graphics are one area) or they intend to make money other ways (ie. item sales, in-game advertisement). I'd much rather pay money and have a quality game and have ZERO desire to support things like in-game item sales or advertisement. The more those forms of revenue prove viable the more you will see of them and that is definitely a bad thing in my opinion.

    2. The graphics.

The game not only appears to have weak graphics but also a poor art style. Nothing exciting here. If it had some really cool, exciting features I might be interested but for a dungeon romp? No thanks.

I think it is interesting that you find the graphics so bad. The other game in this market is Dungeon Runners. Those graphics are no where near as nice as the Mythos graphics.

I dont know how they intend to make money on this... but I would suspect micropayments and a item shop. Some people just dont like that style of pay to play. However, it is the new 'hot' method of making money on a game, so expect to see a lot more of it.

and that bring the "graphic sux" count to one. let's see if we can hit every single canned response in one thread. Come on people!! Don't bail on me now!!!

According to the website, Mythos makers are currently allowing players to send alpha invites to others. If anyone reading this has alpha access, I would love to get an invite. I'm a big D2 fan and would love to check this game out. You can contact me with through my email   perezsjsu@yahoo.com or my AIM  eddix247

Well seeing as this game is developed by Flagship Studios (many devs from the original Diablo series) the final product is gonna kick serious buttocks.

Think Diablo, but the server Towns are able to handle a good deal of people, but all the action takes place in instanced dungeons with a party, or solo. Therefore no one is running around stealin' your loot unless they are with you. Fantastic. Ok graphics etc, may not be completely fantastic but the main thing is that the dev team are currently testing Network/Server load rather than client performance. expect more graphics/tweaks closer to betaRC.

Also seems like it supports PvP in arenas, not too sure how this works. So if you want to PvP there is a specific instance. None of this "I'm gonna go round make everyone's life hell for players <25" etc.

Crafting system, yet again looks like a great continuation from Diablo2, with craft items & gems. Anyone who has played Diablo2 will see the potential in this.

    So Pros are:

Instanced Dungeons (party supported by the look of it), communal Towns for trading, seperate area for PvP.

    Cons:

Your gonna need a new mouse after a while.

Looking foward to this one. I have played about every mmo/rpg/rts out there but very few have had the fun factor that the old diablo 2 had. If this is similar? Count me in!

Looks kinda like one of those Diablo knock-offs.

Just because I can, I have to agree with the people who are against it being free.

Nothing good has come from the so-called 'free' games (where you have to pay to keep up with other people... yeah...) and frankly, I don't see it helping Mythos either.

Who knows, maybe they will be just as retarded as Dungeon Runners: "Pay us for a Mythos account, and we will let you stack potions!!!!1!!11one" yeah... smart there... mmhmm...

You know, if no one wants to pay to play your MMO, don't bother. All these MMOs that came out pay, and went free, did it for one reason, their MMO was bad enough that not enough people would pay them to play it, so they were forced to gimp their game with alternate routes.

I don't see the draw in playing a game for free, when the guy who is forking out $100 can get as much, if not more, than I can, just because he has money. I work an entire month for what I have... he pays in a day. Great system, balance is amazing. GG

Give up with the free system, all you're doing is telling the public openly that your game sucks, and you know it.

This is not even an mmo, with that being said, why would I want to P2P this when the game is basically Diablo 2 with different graphics? Not to mention, the zones are so small and everything is instanced (even towns), exploration is non-existent which makes D2 look like an mmo compared to it. Not trying to bash the game, but I really can't see why I would spend money on this when I can play D2 that offers more for free.

Hey smart guy, Flagship STudios is filled with ex-Blizzard employees who created Diablo. So pretty much, they ahve the right to make another game like it without the flames. Learn to research

That was totally uncalled for. Learn to behave.
