I'm atm currently looking for a new MMORPG to play after I quit my last one. I've played WoW for quite some time now, but I grew tired of it and want to try something new. I've tried EVE online, but I didn't like the game, the main reason was probably that u didn't stand on the ground. From what I've understood LOTRO will soon be released, closer to release than WAR or AoC anyways. Now ofc I'm not sure if the game will be worth to buy, so I would like to have a answer to a few questions.
1. The level system How will the leveling work, will u do the usually mobfarming in order to gain lvl? Will the quests be based on lore, or just simply "kill 20 gorialls"?
2. Moving How will you move in the game? Is by using WASD or clicking? Are u allowed to jump in the game?
3. PvP How will the PvP work, is it different "factions" or can u choose to be a monster? Will there be BG:s or will it be outdoor PvP only?
4. PvE How is the PvE? Is it just simply to double-click/right click or do u have to cast alot of spells or use skills to kill the "mobs"? Do you need to much "skill" to kill the "mobs" or is it easymode?
5. Endgame? Is there a maxlvl? What will you do when u reach the final lvl?
6. Focus? Is the game focused around PvE or PvP?
7. Becoming a monster I've heard that u can actually play a monster in LOTRO, could u give me some information about this?
8. New content Is the content in the game new, or is just the usual stuff in all other MMORPGs. Do they "bring a new level" to the online playing or do they stay and to the welltested stuff?
Thanx in advance for answers and if it's something else u want to add, go ahead. All information is nice.

Your options:
1. If you pre-order (10 bucks) you get into open-beta and can play from Mar 30 up thru May 24. You can convert to retail of course after apr-24, or just choose not to and play lotro for almost 2 months for 10 bucks.
2. You can get an open-beta key and play for nothing from Apr-6 to Apr-24.
3. You can take somebody else's word for it... like mine:
Answers:
1. quests give more xp than killing mobs. quests based on lore and are good
2. wasd. jumping on.
3. pvp. they call it pvmp. There is one large zone that is really a BG, and that is the only place where pvp occurs. Each person can have up to 5 monster characters on a server. once you get to lvl 10, you can zone into the bg as a lvl 50 monster that does quests, fights, etc. Until lots of 'good guys' get to max level, there's not gonna be much to do of course, just fighting mobs. So in a month or so, there will be lvl 50s that will be beaming in and lots of fights happening etc.
4. You use skills when fighting.
5. max lvl 50. end game = pvmp + raids + xpack-hopefully-soon
6. focus = pve
7. see #3 and other posts.
8. not much new as far as gameplay. a high ratio of looks / specs. (in other words, for the system requirements, it looks and runs VERY GOOD.... compared with something like VG, that has a very low looks/specs ratio). Lots of room for expansions. Good main story. Good balance of group-vs-solo quests. The fact that quests give more xp than killing makes people very group-friendly, i.e. easy to just see someone running around and group with them finish quest X.
Bottom line: it's a good first start. If turbine comes out with xpacks or more content at a good rate, it will be a great game. If not, it might fizzle some when WAR / AoC comes out (if they are any good).

I'm one of the european players who preordered the game, got my preorder kit right here and I can just watch at the box until 10 days before release since I'm not accepted into the open beta.
Why does it sucks
Explain please!
Ok quite pointless to throw down your opinion here without backing it up with some arguments or reasons why you feel like it sucks... you could as well have written "I need to poo!"
It shares a lot of traits with WoW (so do a lot of games) but I know quite a few people who couldn't stand WoW who love LOTRO in beta. I like both.
I've gotten fairly far without doing more than a handfull of "core" LOTR related quests, I think you could easily enjoy this game without ever having read the books or seen the movies as long as you like the playstyle and game mechanics. I think you'll enjoy it MORE if you know what the background is, but by no means is it required, at least not as high as I've gotten in beta (level 25).
I got to 38 in the beta (twice) on my loremaster and enjoyed it big time. It was actually pretty refreshing. What made WoW appeal to people on a grand stand is that is was supposed to be more casual than EQ. Turned out well for them. This game is a tiny bit more casual and you can get a lot done. To claim something sucks without posting a reason or two why is pretty ignorant, but to each his own.
Between the hardcore LOTR fans and a majority of the people looking to get out of WoW, this game will be a hit.
IMHO.

Apologies to the OP but since we are way off topic here already I have noticed that a lot of the really hard core Lord Of the Rings fans are some of the biggest critics of the game, I have been following the game since 99 and Sierra was the developer and seen most of the Similarion thumpers stalk off in disgust. I am more of a casual fan myself (read the books several times and saw the movies once each) and enjoy the game. I do know of one hard core Sim thumper who is also a console game dev who enjoyed the beta immensely though, I think he was really surprised that they could stick to the lore and still make a decent game. He said he still has moments of WTF when he sees a group of elves running through the barrows though

As a huge fan of the Tolkien's works, i have to say i was disappointed though wouldn't say it actually sucks.
I have tested this game since September and while it is a stable and fun game it isn't Tolkien and it left me cold.
It is missing what, for me Tolkien was/is all about...imagination and worse it is lacking any form of the MMO magic that made these games what they were.
When i first read 'The Hobbit' and later LOTR, it fired my imagination, made me see fiction in a new light as I know it did for countless others. It spawned a whole new industry, genre and ethos of creativity. Sadly Turbine have killed that spirit dead and I am left wishing that they had left well alone, Jackson had his critics but he performed minor surgery compared to this frontal lobotomy.
Orcs and Goblins in the Shire
Hobbits armed to the teeth from day one
More wolves/wargs/bears and badgers than people
Cardboard cut out story NPC's...Bilbo and Frodo just seemed sooo lifeless
The only bit that felt right was the Old Forest and that has had paths lined with torches added to totally ruin the one authentic experience the game had.
the list is endless so I will stop now....

ouch. well, that's a bummer. and OP is from Sweden. Also, I don't like the whole split of Europe from the US, even though I don't personally have friends in europe I plan on playing with. That's always been one of the coolest things about the internet imo, is that it closes cultural gaps, and gets people talking that otherwise would never get together.
But the game will be worth the 10 bucks minimum, even if it's just for 5 weeks instead of 7.
There's really only a few choices right now:
- wow / eq2 (old stuff - i've already maxed both games personally... yawn)
- eve (edgy stuff)
- lotro and vg (new stuff.... and lotro doesn't have all the probs running that VG has).
LOTRO is just one interpretation of Middle Earth. That is how I'm approaching it (some might say rationalizing). When I look at the different artistic interpretations of Middle Earth, can I say that Allen Lee's vision is better than Howe's or Hildebrandt/s? When I watch the Bakshi animated versions, I'm seeing yet another interpretation of Middle Earth quite different than Peter Jackson's.
LOTRO has had to make some compromises (some I don't agree with, and some that are quite creative), but the devs have put forth a good-faith effort to be faithful. I can appreciate that. Compare their effort to say EA Games complete raping of anything Middle Earth, and I think you'll find a new appreciation for LOTRO.
They try to get it right. I respect them quite a bit for that.P.S. from recent patch notes on the beta boards:

The game during beta was casual both in gameplay and in the amount of time needed to 'level up'. They have already started the xp nerfing to slow people down, not sure if it was always intended or they just realised it doesn't have enough content for hardcore players. It was possible to pretty much level using solo quests alone until level 40 but then you required a group as xp from mobs is low.
The gameplay is, in some ways, easier than wow as you don't have half as many skills to worry about and combat remains press A then B then A again. Once you hit 40 you will find that nearly every mob is an elite or you have to go through an army of elites to get to the non elite you are after.
With the xp rate slowed, requiring more of the quests to be completed to level, together with the insane number of elites, this game will rapidly become a grind and a soloists nightmare....IMO
@ Angelbound cap at lvl 15 is only for open beta since character can be transfered when the game goes life, clsed beta didt have lvl cap at 15
@OP: imho this game in comparison to lots of the other mmo's (played nearly every mmo) this game is made to Relax, loved the fact that in beta when i got my first instrument found myself playing music with various peeps for over an hour and not even thinking about lvls/gear or currency.
