I've always played graphic based mmos. iv heard of text based mmos before but i never tried one, i came across www.ironrealms.com and wanted to try it out. And id have to say theres so much more depth and the imagination is alot more immersive. it seems today the trend in mmos is endless grinding. really is that fun? you pay 15$ a month to kill pixels over and over with a mask over it to make it seem like your achieving something. MUDS are kinda like books that you write as you play. most muds are completely free, so i just wanted some of you if you havent already, try one of them. www.ironrealms.com develops and maintains 4 text based mmos and if you want to try one. its really a great break from the modern brain dead mmos :

Anyway, that's more than enough for you to get a good taste of what MUD is all about. Those of you who aren't supernaturally repelled by the sight of books will be pleasantly surprised at just how advanced the gameplay in many these games are in comparison to MMORPGs.

The best free mud I played so far is www.carrionfields.com/ .
I just love the huge world and the heavy emphasis on RP and PvP there.
I really dont understand what the hate towards Medievia?!
All that i can see is technically advanced mud. With really nice ASCII map feature , i wonder why other muds dont have.
So whats the story, enlighten me

I've gone back to MUDs too. They do actually have the things so many of us are crying out for from MMORPGs. If you really want to see an in-depth game, go and have a look.
I'd also recommend the Iron Realms games. You can play for free, but after a while, you'll realise you are at a disadvantage to those who are paying, but you can pay as much as you like for what you like. I'm yet to pay, but the game is good enough to warrant some money, so I'm happy to put some money into it.
For a similar game (the Iron Realms games were based on this) try www.avalon-rpg.com which is a pay monthly game and is a little more hard-core PvP.
Be warned, you'll not find a much steeper learning curve in a game, if you've not tried these before.

I see
Well to be honest , i never even realised Medievia has any SPONSORED items or anything that would involve real money.
Maybe it is no longer true.
At any extent , MEDIEVIA displays your location on ASCII minimap, at all times. Which makes navigation , not a pain like in every other MUD - and in my oppinion it is the downfall of every other MUD.
It is also one of most advanced MUDs ... and the same people slanted in above article , are babysitting newbies around the clock and are very friendly.
So to tell you the truth. I dont give a damn if Medievia code is DIKU derivate or not.
The game is probably the best MUD around.

I agree, this certainly is a good help for players that are new to MUDs.
