To be honest I'm a pvp freak. There is nothing better then showing off your skills letting people know U are the best. But The games now adays don't have pvp down packed. PvP shouldn't include leveles. It shouldn't include point and click skills. Pvp is about Stragety imagine a game based solely on pvp. But no point and click just a controller. A massive army of real people on 1 screen and u test your skills against them that is truly pvp. As of right now there is no game like this. So pvp will only be experimented with. A world without pvp is a retarded world. Because Pvp or rather wars and fighting is everywhere.
A massive army of people on one screen would be far from a skilled battle. At best it would just be a bunch of backstabbing. Obviously whoever can keep their back away from everyone else will last longer than even the most skilled player and the only two players who will require skill, will be the last two players left when they are forced to go one on one. Also, pvp does not always determine who is better. Many games like World of Warcraft place too much emphasis on gear, rather than skill. Also, class choice of a player plays into it as well. As a Caster class (Mage when I played WoW) I would be shocked if a melee player actually made it to me to damage me. Certain classes naturally have an advantage over others and again, in most games in todays day and age gear plays into it.You could be the most skilled player on a server but with shitty gear you will be SOL when it comes to fighting players with the best gear. When my spells naturally do 2x more damage than yours and my gear makes it so that I have three times the health you do, I would not consider myself all that skilled.
I would not venture as far as to call a game without pvp "retarded" especially with your sentence structure, because there are many games that were a hit that had little to no pvp in them. WoW took forever to bring in its battlegrounds. FFXI went over a year without any form of pvp.
In order to test your true skill in an MMORPG you would have to have complete character balance, something no game has at the moment.
What was the earth shaking evolution of online gaming? You started to face HUMAN oponents rather than mobs/npcs with idiotic AI. That's the thrill. That's the evolution. The challenge. Tthat's the one step beyond.
it's also fun to play with people though, like doing the gears of war campaign with a friend miles away from you. Or the partying stuff in mmo's
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You? if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it. Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end
If character customization is very in depth and very varied with the possibility of creating something unique , i guess i need pvp to ensure that the long hours of digging did get me some fruit of challenge.

Open up the Internet, join in all the Mmorpgs you can. Go make the Guild. But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible. "

Sounds like avoiding getting back stabbed would be desirable skill. Yes large scale battles and small skirmishes are tactically different but to say skill is irrelevant in one or the other is IMO misleading.

Which is why you will see so many comments about integrated PvP having no place in an aggressively level-based item-centric game. Unfortunately those are the types of games that most people are familiar with and consequently cannot fathom an MMO not being that way.

Originally posted by Hexxeity Mutantmagnet, please try not to generalize. We are not all competitive creatures. Some people prefer to cooperate. Not cooperate against other players, just cooperate against the game. All those "alternate" forms of PvP (competing for resources, getting the best gear) are just as annoying and/or uninteresting to a non-PvP player as PvP combat is. Sometimes more so.
You're human and whether you like it or not you are both a competitive and cooperative creature by default. You may end up with your preferences which is part of the reason why I mentioned all mmos shouldn't include pvp aspects. I fully acknowledge people have different tastes and better exploration of our nature can be had from being able to play games that mix both competititve and cooperative play and games that solely cater to only one aspect.
Ohaan - I might be wrong here myself because I'm making the assumption that while you acknowledged Inf666's broader definition of player versus player it seems when you addressed the question directly you were doing it in the context of the narrow definition. If my assumption was wrong I apologize if my assumption is correct that's where your error came from.
I don't think every "great" MMORPG needs PvP. I prefer games with no PvP or at least consentual PvP but at the same time I think there should be MMORPGs based on PvP for those players that enjoy it. Varity is the spice of life right?

Wat u said right there is wat i was thinking. Just didn't know how to say it. If a pvp Mmorpg had that then it would be great. Also i agree when u say mages should be able to take down a warrior but that depends on toughness and speed. Like u said only a game with character balance would pop out the truly most skilled character player
