The costs of playing

It is quite funny to read almost everywhere about relevance of the prices of subscriptions (15 US$ a month!) while noone is caring about the price of the time they spend.

Have you ever thought that for the most of you spending 1/10 of the time you spend in the games in a stupid part time job could give you yearly subscription to 10 games?

The real question is if its worth $15/month.  Many of these games play like your working at a part-time job.

Say no to high subscription rates that keep going up.  The more you pay for them, the more justification the publisher has to increase the rates.

If you pre order Age of Conan you only pay 9.99 for the life of the account per month instead of the rising rate of 14.99

AoC has that?  I haven't seen the PreOrder for it...

    ...I thought it was LotRO...

Yup, I think that is the direction all future pay to play MMOs will go. If you buy the game after launch it is 14.99. If you preorder you get a 9.99 deal.

Lotro is the only game that has the option for 1 time fee of 200 bucks and then you can play until the game closes out years down the road.

Do you have a link to this mysterious AoC information?

Or any other MMO doing it that's not LotRO?

Go read their forum. They also said they will not do the whole 1 payment lifetime fee because it gives them money up front, but it hurts the game down the road.

    Rule # 1      Never preorder.

I do not think preordering is bad, I mean if you know you are getting it and willing to at least try it for 2 months, it saves you money to preorder and get the 9.99 for the second month(first month is free).

    Lifetime fee is bad, IMO.

    Don't give me that...

I preorder TONS of MMOs and TONS of games in general yearly.  My Gamestop bill last year was well over $2000.  It's worth every penny, and I'm glad to put the money down, even if it's lost.

You people who flip out about the $5/10/15/20 PreOrder cause it's an afront to you are quite pathetic in my opinion.  I spent that amount at 3 hours at the movie, let alone the hours available in the Beta I get into for PreOrdering that I don't play cause I don't play MMO Betas.

PreOrdering is great.  I do it.

The thing is, yes a part time job could pay for them, and that would also give you time to actually play them, but then what about other bills?

    rent

    food

    clothes

    electric

    internet

... the list goes on ;)

Thats bull, I pre-ordered a bunch of games and I never had any regret. Some games come with nice little extra's when pre-ordered.

There are situations where preordering is a good idea. Especially when you know you are going to play it for a long time. You have to ignore hype and trolls and make your own opinion and if you truly feel a game suites you, go for that preorder!

Actually, Rule #1 is "never spend money on a game you haven't played." If you're in the beta and you dig it, go ahead and pre-order. Ditto for pre-release demos. However, you really shouldn't spend money on something you don't have firsthand knowledge of. I guess movies, but when you to that the most you lose is $12. With console and PC games, you're looking at $50. I'm not willing to spend that without knowing that I'm going to enjoy the ride.
