IP Blocking Removed

Hello everyone,

Throughout the Alpha and Beta phases of development, we have worked hard to satisfy the enthusiastic community that has risen up in support of LOTRO. We listened to and incorporated your ideas many times throughout development and our game is now stronger for it. As we prepare for launch we wanted to let you know that your feedback still matters. We have been listening and will continue to do so in the future.

Recently, some players expressed their concern about our plans to implement IP blocking. After listening to our fans, we have decided to remove IP blocking in North America.

However, we strongly encourage players to purchase and play the game in their region to receive the best game experience, connectivity and local customer support. Please note that regional clients are only operable with their respective regional services.

In closing, we would like to thank the players for your feedback. Your honest input has been invaluable to us throughout development. We are always listening to your feedback.

Enjoy Middle-earth!

Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

I hope all the naysayers and the people that canceled their preorders pay attention.

Turbine is doing a good job and listening to their players.

They noticed that this was a big deal for people, and they reversed the course on ip blocking.

    Good Job Turbine!

I think they should just use good servers and connection and F NA and EU servers soi many people play acrossed tham anyway. And it can be done i mean EVE is one server for NA or EU and everyone from both places play their fine. (And they don't even have the big bucks these other co. do)

dial-up ($9/mo) connects to the isp at about 130ms and domestic after going through 6 to 12 hops connects to the game server at 250 to 350ms. Crossing the atlantic to play on euro servers can easily add 150 to 250ms, making the connect to a foreign server 400 to 600ms... crossing the pacific can add 400ms making the connect nearly 8ooms... that is near 1 second delay ONE WAY, so expecting meaningful dynamic 2-way connection/performance is a farce playing on servers on the other side of the planet.

Think dsl ($40/mo) is like 50ms and ($70/mo) cable 20ms to the isp and 70ms to 100ms domestic definitly beter than the 300ms dial-up looks forward to in gameplay.

Another consideration is monthly limitations placed by broadband providers on their users. One can easily do 100MB up/down DAILY playing games.

edit, corrected the 100GB to 100MB.
btw, in asia (s korea, japan) it is 10 to 30GB/s broadband near $39 per month !! while in US it is tough to even get 150KB/s.

I've always played on US servers from the EU with no problems with lag.

Referring to the piece above, they say IP blocking is removed, but regional locking is still in? Therefore to play on US servers from the EU you need to purchase a US copy of the game? Or am I reading this wrong?

Yeah that is hwat I got from the post.  Which makes sense since there are two different service providers really.  Turbine and their copy in NA and Codemasters and their copy in EU.  So if you want to play on the NA servers you need a NA copy of the game.

That's why it's good to have a few Euros over here. The more Euros on the NA servers, the more chance you'll have of finding someone with a reasonable command of the English language.

Good news from Turbine, that's actually somewhat impressive that they were on their toes about changing that.  But it was pretty obvious what the outcome would be, they're not stupid enough to shoot themselves in foot over something so simple.

Hmm...I might have to rethink my anti-Turbine position

Well done Turbine. A hell of a lot of folks will remember that you listened to the community. Thanks for doing the right thing!

Gj Turbine. I wasn't going to buy the game at all, but now with the IP blocking removed I'll buy the NA version.

    Khmmm Excuse me?? :)))) 100GB ??? must be a typo for 100MB ? On a 3mbit DSL I can download 20MB/minute, so 100GB would come down in 100x50 - 5000 minutes, which is 83+ hours :)

To DL 100Gb a day you would need a 10+ mbit connection, and 24 hr nonstop full bandwith download...

And btw - what's a "dialup" ? :P (kidding). I seriously don't believe still anyone in the US/EU has it anymore... in Hungary you can buy a 4 mbit limitless ADSL for 30 bucks a month :)

Great news, I am glad Turbine changed their mind and lifted the IP blocking.
I jumped out of joy when I heard the news yesterday evening. Imagine, I had just given up the hope playing LOTRO and had just installed EQ2 :D Of course I uninstalled at once after I heard the news

@precusor: In LOTRO you can switch off the OOC-channel. I guess in the other games you do that too
