i have been thinking alot bout that 200 bucks sounds bad but i like to come and go out of games and still find i still play eq1 and eq2 and some month wow so over all might be great at least i would be able to log in as i want and never have to worry if i have the extra cash for it
I've been playing LotRo ever since Alpha and watched all the changes it has done.
I know a lot of people need to still play the open beta that is starting this friday March 30th for the preorders and then the rest of what will be left open for non-preorders on April 6th.
So really this poll is a bit premature and shouuldn't even be started at least not until mid April when more have checked it out.
For myself. I plan to pay the $199 for the lifetime subscription. Knowing that all the monthly free content and the expansions they will be adding until Mordor is in the world will be awesome times to come. Plus all the other areas they plan to add after Frodo returns the ring will only give a ton of more content to the world.
I know I will be playing this game for a VERY LONG TIME. Eventhough I plan to check out AoC, WH, still play WoW and EQ2, plus VG:S0H once they get more stuff in the world. In addition to Hero's Journey, if that hopefully comes out...
I just wish other MMO's would offer some sort of lifetime subscription offer so I don't have to keep track of what I am currently subscribed to and what I need to stop or start. However I don't think it should be only offered at the beginning. They should let us pay a monthly fee first so we know if we plan to stay with it long term. Hey, they would make more money from us if they did. Not only are they going to get the $199, but they could have gotten the $10 or $15 a month until I changed my ways.
They need to use it as a saftey net, not a fishing net. That is the only problem I see with it. However, I got to play with it for over 7 months, unlike some only will get a month to make up their minds.
I think it's great that Turbine is making an offer like this for people who want it. That said, with one free month of open beta, one free month with purchase of the game, and the $10 a month founders rate you'd have to play for 23 months to come out ahead with the lifetime deal. If I'm still playing this game in 23 months I'll be impressed enough that parting with that extra $10 each month won't phase me.
It IS worth noting that if you take the founders rate and cancel at anytime you can not come back at the founders rate but must pay the same $15 a month as everyone else. I don't have the link but I found this in one of the faqs on the LOTRO site. The same holds true for the lifetime, though why if you paid for it you would even bother to cancel it I couldn't say.

Yeah, the Founder options being either $10 a month or the Lifetime subscription of $199 are both nice alternatives.
Comparing the Lifetime to normal sub fees, the lifetime would have paid for itself in 13 months. Which would be right around the time the first expansion comes out. Comparing the the $10 founder sub to the lifetime, the lifetime would have paid for itself after 20 months, which would be around the time the second expansion comes out.
From what I understand, there will be 5 retail expansions with Mordor being the fifth one. During all that time there will be free updates on an average of every 4-6 weeks.
As for cancellation of the $10.00 a month founder sub, you will lose your founder status and if you resubscribe you will have to pay the normal subscription fee of $14.99. Same goes with the $199.99 lifetime if you cancel your subscription.
However, anyone that cancels their lifetime subscription would be a fool. You aren't paying any monthly fees and only losing the ability to play a game at no addition charges.
I highly reccommend that you do not do the $199 unless you plan to play all the way to Mordor. You will then for sure get the best bargain for LotRo for sure.
Think about it. one expansion a year and the Fifth one being Mordor. So go figure...
5 Years....
Regular sub fees $14.99 x5 years $899.40
Monthly founder sub of $10.00 x5 years $600.00
If you are thinking that you don't play any MMO that long. Really give it a thought and ask yourself how long UO has been out, EQ, AC, DAoC, EQ2 or even WoW.
Think about it, if you played WoW since launch then you are headed for 3 years in November 2007.
So far WoW has been active ever since 11/23/04 up to date of say 03/23/07. that would be 28 months so far. If you have been active constantly with WoW. Then this is the total you have paid to date just for one account and only the subscription fess, excluding the game price and Burning Crusade expansion.
$419.72
Now, woudn't that be AWESOME if Blizzard offered a $199.99 lifetime subscription?
Or any MMO for that matter?
EDITED: So, in the end, you can go pay EB Games $10.00 for the pre-order and play LotRo from March 30th to April 24th and then you decide if you want to cancel the pre-order and get your $10.00 bucks back or pump out the $40 more bucks (assuming that it will be $50.00 bucks for the game like most games) to buy it.
However, you now have over 3 weeks in to come to a decision to either pay $10.00 a month till you burn out on the game and $14.99 if you decide to return. Or if you are like me and have came to the conclusion that Turbine FINALLY got their crap to stop stinking ever since AC2 and DDO were dudz. You can then forkout the bucks and buy the lifetime deal.
It's all up to you and Turbine is telling you "Hey, just put up the $10 bucks to try it out. if you don't like it go get your $10 bucks back at EB games and nothing is loss. It is all up to you...ENJOY!
Even after the first 2-3 weeks of playing this game (when I enjoyed it the most), I wouldn't take this deal because, like another poster stated, it would make me feel obligated to play until I felt like I got my money's worth. The last thing I want is to feel like have to play a game just so I don't feel like I wasted money. After 6 weeks of playing, I'm struggling with whether or not I'm gonna buy this game at all. It's lost a lot of it's luster real quick. Of course, these are just my thoughts on it, and I'm sure this is an intriguing deal to some. Especially, for those hard-core Tolkien fans. I strongly recommend that you play the beta before even thinking of partaking in this deal, and don't pay too much attention to what people say about it on these forums if you haven't tried it. In the end, the only opinion that really matters is your own.
A very smart marketing strategy by Turbine though. I don't really see how they could lose with it.

Look at it from another perspective.
If you buy a lifetime account you have a basic game you can play for years and even if you grew tired of it you can leave it on your HD and always come back when you feel like it.
No need to rush anything because you allready paid for lifetime.
No need to sit and grind everyday because you don't have to think about paying more money(cept for new paid expansions)
You might become boored after 6 months, but you know you always can come back when ew expansions/Updates hit the street.
When you change to future games like Warhammer Online or something you always have the option to log into lord of the rings and have fun with your old mates.
I hope Turbine start a trend and more companies will make these lifetime offers.
I would love to have lifetime in both LOTRO and Warhammer and other future games.
No hassle messing with your Creditcard,no monthly fees and mastercard fee.
200 bucks is only like 6 months of SOE Station pass or 13 months of COH. I am sure with all the expansions I will get at least that much time out of this game and probably a lot more.
Not sure... I had originally pre-ordered for the 9.99 fee.
If I were single the $199 price would be very appealing but selling the $200 for a video game idea to my wife would be quite a challenge. Especially considering that only UO, EQ, SWG and EVE have ever held my attention for more than 1 year.

If I remember correctly, you still have to purchase the updates when you buy a lifetime subscription, it's just the monthly fees that you don't have to pay. Is that correct?

Not quite.

Just by looking at the size or Mirkwood it looks like that's big enough for an entire expansion
Mirkwood is almost the size of the entire area we have at release.
I'm 99,99% sure that Mordor will become a paid expansion.

As far as trying to get the wife to sign off on this idea I told her how much I had spent previously on MMOs and she said I would be a dumbass not to buy it in one lump sum.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
When I first saw that offer the priced seemed pretty steep to me, but when I went to delete my WoW account (Finally!) and I looked at my billing history, I realized just how good of a price 200 dollars can be for an MMO. I'm going to take my chances with it
I'm closing a Founder Membership, 6 month contract. This will cost me 55€, which I think is fair enough for 6 months. It also saves me 30€ if I would buy ''game-cards''
I said yes, not because I will be getting lotr >.> ... but because if some of the mmorpg's I have played/playing had this option... DEAL! oO
I would love to be able to just login whenever I want and stop playing for a few weeks or so and then come back again and play some more... its a sweet deal.. too bad I dont like lotr.
I may have to go without food for a week, but, hell yeah I'm going to do it. It's the best deal an MMO gamer could ever realistically expect. I've heard a few spouting warnings about how Turbine can't be trusted, Turbine are liars, blah blah blah. Bullshit, this game is going to be a hit and will be around long after they've shipped the last of the Trilogy's story line. No, I can't really afford to spend $250 in a single month on computer games, but it's just too good to pass up.
The $10 a month fee is fine for me. That is almost two years playtime against the $200 plan. I don't think LotRO will keep me interested much beyond that. But, even if it does, I expect that the $10 price will still be a bargain. There is a chance that I will only play it for a short while. Then, $10 a month is a real bargain; and $200 would be a huge loss.

Thing is, you have to never let your subscription lapse at all. Or you will be back to paying the $14.99 monthly fees.
the $199.99 will let you come and go as you please with no further worry of pumping out any funds, except for the expansion costs.
Keep in mind that Turbine has already announced 5 expansions. Which obviously your 2 years of play won't probably get you past Gondor or Rohan. By the time Mordor is on the map you will more than likely be on your 3 to 5 year of LotRo. With you paying $10.00 a month you will have already spent $360.00 up to $600.00...Which of course to even keep that deal you can't miss not even one month of your subscription or you are back to normal fees.
If you say you think you'll not play longer than 20 months and NEVER EVER come back then I can see paying the 10 bucks a month as you pay that $199.99 in monthly costs. But guess what, with that same amount up front you got yourself a lifetime of LotRo. So in the end you lose out, especially when you see them add Mordor and you have to pay $14.99 a month to come back.
I don't recommend this type of offer to newbies to the genre, since they don't have a feel for a history of their habits with regards to MMO'ing. But for you all that have been playing at least since WoW release or earlier, you know your habits if you come and go on MMO's and your longevity of playing.
For myself, I still hope in AC and UO just for kicks. I still play EQ2 off and on and I keep leaving WoW and coming back like if she was an old girlfriend that just know how to treat me. Did the same thing with AC and I finally stopped uninstalling her and reinstalling her on a whim. AC now stays on my system and every now and then when I get the itch I go in and play with others that do the same. Think about it..... AC is almost 8 years old.....UO is almost 10 years... I plan to even purchase the UO Kingdom Reborn when it comes out. http://www.uoherald.com/kingdomreborn/
AlL I say to you all, don't count your days in Lotro before you even try it. If you think you are going to play this game to the current end game, then I highly recommend you get the $199 deal. Because as each expansion keeps pushing the end game further and further in Middle Earth, you all will come back each time and kick yourself in the butt once you look back and seen you spent over $400.00+ on just sub fees.

Your info on the $199 membership is incorrect. Here is the info right off the LotRO site :
Once it has been paid, you may cancel, but cannot receive a refund for a Lifetime Membership. Lifetime Memberships for active accounts (accounts that have not been canceled) are good for the product’s lifetime. Lifetime Memberships may not be transferred or assigned. Lifetime Memberships that have been previously canceled can not be reactivated
yeah, thats for sure. a better deal than any MMO so far as I've seen.
Yes, both are good, but if you think in your mind at all that you will come back after leaving. Otherwords if you are like me and leave, come back, leave, come back. Curse the game, come back, swear to self I will never play again, then re:install and then come back.

but its very expensife at this time, but if i'm going to play lort online i would buy the lifetime.
most of the times the good mmorpg's i dont play ( or on private servers) becouse of the monthly fee.
i would pay more for the game that usual just to get rid of the fee's thats for sure.
then you wont have the feeling you have to play or else its money thrown away.

Just FYI
Wait, I just reread your post. What is your point?
I think you are misreading what I am saying.
Probably.
Lot of text there.
Any way you cut it, if one plays for a year or more, both are good deals.
Heck of a lot better than we have gotten from SoE lately !
Why would anyone in their right mind cancel a lifetime membership?
Hell sell the account on ebay or something...

yeah, thats for sure. a better deal than any MMO so far as I've seen.
Yes, both are good, but if you think in your mind at all that you will come back after leaving. Otherwords if you are like me and leave, come back, leave, come back. Curse the game, come back, swear to self I will never play again, then re:install and then come back.
Then the $199 deal is your best bet
