I think there should be PvP in a mmorpg. It just adds another dimesion to the gameplay. Either a system similar to DAoC, or maybe a system like old Ultima Online, or possibly a PvP system like Lineage II are better to have in a game than no PvP at all. They could all use some improvements, but overall, PvP adds to the thrill of a game. It should not be made necessary for a player to get into. Of course games like old UO and Lineage II sometimes force PvP upon you, but it is made clear to players that this is the main purpose and feature of the game.
In games that do not focus on PvP, there should be a nice mix. I think DAoC has it right, allowing players to enter PvP when they wish, or stay away from it if so desired. Games like Star Wars Galaxies has PvP according to your characters state (overt/covert) and can be switched back and forth. Also games that have PvP designated areas are a good way to implement PvP. I like DAoC's PvP dungeon (Darkness Falls), I thought it was a great idea and works well.
I am not a PvP fanatic, I actually don't participate much in it, but I like it. I cannot point out all the complaints and problems many players have with the different PvP features I mentioned, but for someone like me, they were all well and good. (I do get pissed when I get PK'd in Lineage II, though).
PVP should follow asheron's call - darktide. If I ever made a MMORPG, that's what I would make it like. I'm sorry, but it keeps retarded kiddies out of the game, and allows for an environment that pushes people to be the best. The only reason I've stayed with AC -DT is because of the pvp... killing monsters got old 2 years ago... even the new ones are boring.. but it's the raids, the soloing.. killing noobs, killing high levels and getting SSs as trophies... that's where it's at... that's where you make a name for yourself.

Hehe, a player like me will only keep playing a game if I am victorious to some extend.
Take 10 players like me, put them in a PvP setting, and 1 or 2 months after you only have 1 of them left!
