Not I.  I personally hate the Sci Fi ones.  I have never been a fan of Science Fiction.  :(

And of all the MMOs coming out the only one I am looking forward to from a Sci Fi perspective is Warhammer 40K.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

I'm being forced to integrate a Fantasy portion in the game I'm working on... although according to him he integrated it in through "Time Portals"... not sure how that'll work with the space portion of the game though.

If you look around you will find quite a few sci-fi MMO's, although in general you will find we have to cater towards more niche markets when creating them.

Sci-fi just does not have the same widespread popularity of orcs n' elvis.

It is a breath of fresh air to see I am not the only one that feels there needs to be more sci-fi based MMO's.  StarTrek looks cool, but by no means am I a trek freak, or like start trek.    I know that Star Gates is comming, and that looks really cool too.  (Never watched the shows, or the movie either)  ;- )  I have been playing MMO's for a while, and it's usually go kill x many orcs, gnolls, or skeletons to progress w/ quests or grinding for that matter.

However it would be nice to see SWG actually make something new to give Start Trek competition.  (Okay so I Star Wars movies, and ewoks are sooo cute)

They should make something that does not have to be oriented with a movie, or a TV series.  Sit down think up a story or honestly we should say stories that will help enguage we as players with something fresh and new.   Not just something that we can relate to from past experience.

I have to say that StarGate is looking interesting so far. It has a well established and flexible IP that can adapt well to MMO conditions. For me it is looking to be the most exciting of the upcoming sci-fi propositions.

I'm personally not that tired of fantasy mmo's...although I am a little tired of the uncreativity associated with the fantasy mmo's.  There are many more things they could do with the fantasy, other than orcs and humans and elves.  Also I am a big fan of sci-fi, I'm just waiting for one of the sci-fi games to catch my attention, so far I haven't been drawn in to any really.

Yeah I am sick of elves, orcs, and so forth. I am really looking foward to stargate and star trek.

In the near future, I will probably check out Gods and Heroes as it at least looks to be different.

Give me a decent sci fi or cyberpunk RPG, or give me death!  Ok, deathy is a little harsh, how about a big bottle of whiskey instead?  Mmmm, whiskey.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

I like fantasy the most, Sci -fi , is more like a craving that I need to fill every once in awhile.  I like getting new swords and armors and fighting organic things like trolls and goblins .

    I like pie !

Im extremely tired of fantasy. I dont necessary need a sci fi mmo. A medieval themed game would be ok, as far as it is very little "fantasy" in it. My main problem with fantasy games is all the magic and magical effects. Usualy its enough for me to look at screen shots from a game - if there is big neon sign around a target and burning swords, flashes and holo pictures all over the battle i know its nothing for me. Gnomes is a big minus too. Right now there is two mmo´s on my horizon who looks promising - Age of Conan (combat looks great and no gnomes), and Fallen Earth.

Are you the only one tired of fantasy based MMO's?

    Nope...

Which is why I'm going from CoH to PotBS....

No orcs, elves, dwarfs, or goblins anywhere in my gaming

  • Kriminal99Kriminal99 Member Posts: 377

Agreed.  It's absolutely rediculous how any decent mmo is always fantasy.  The one good sci fi mmo i played was neocron, back when it was first released (it has since been completely ruined 10x over)

I want guns, energy weapons, bizarre technology etc.  Not characters with silly looking ears wandering around arbitrarily shooting fireballs from their hands.

    Whats PoBS?

Personally, most of the fantasy based games haven't really delivered on the possibilities.  Of course this could be a limitation of the mmorpg genre as a whole.  Because of the thousands of other players (sometimes millions) there is no way to really capture that epic and heroic feel of pen and paper rpgs or even single player rpgs.  You can not become a mage with the power of someone like... Gromph Baenre or Raistlin Majere for example.  Sure, you can be in the first group to conquer some boss foe or another but he respawns or is sitting in another instance waiting for the next group to come along, or even worse... sits there waiting for you to come back with the same group of friends and the same tactics you used last time to defeat em.  You can't draw the attention of the gods, cause entire towns full of peasants to drop to their knees in awe of you and your party as you enter the town.

I mean, look at a game like wow.  if you look at any server then take every npc in the towns across azeroth and added em all up (horde and alliance alike) they are probably outnumbered 5 to 1 by the players.  That doesn't exactly give you the feeling that the world is in serious danger where only you and your group are the difference between heaven and hell, so to speak.

And even though there are infinite genres mmorpgs can be set in how can this ever be dealt with?  Imagine Land of the Dead, the halfway decent Romero zombie flick.  Imagine that being an mmorpg.  Imagine, rather than just a couple crews going out to get the items that that city needed if the vast majority of the people of the town were the crews... well, that would just be a bore.

In medieval europe it took a vast army of peasants to feed not only themselves but the lords and ladies, all their knights and the other professional soldiers.  Not to mention all the armourers, weaponsmiths, stable boys, clergy etc etc etc.  Part of me thinks this may just all be a fad.  Sure the publishers like it because they get to charge a subscription fee, but how long will it be before the players want far more than they could ever be given?  I know I for one am starting to get bored of all the mmo's....  but we'll see what comes.

YES! I am sooo burned out on all the cookie cutter fantasy games out now. As I have said many times before, if I see another elf, dwarf, halfling, orc or cutesy anime fantasy character,  Im gonna puke!

It is very hard for me to get  too excited about any of the upcoming fantasy games now. However, I will probably still take a look at Age of Conan (because there are not gonna be any of the aforementioned puktastic races) and possibly Gods & Heroes. But I will definitely wait until they have been out at least 3-4 months and read reviews to see if they are going to be truly different as they claim ,or if they are just more hyped up same ol' same ol' crap in a different wrapper.

Mostly, I am pinning my hopes on some of the new genre games coming out.

For Sci-Fi I am definitely looking forward to Star Trek, Stargate, and Tabula Rasa. One of them is bound to be good. But they wont be out for awhile yet so in the short run to tide me over I am waiting for Granada Espada OB next month (I played the CB and it is good and different) and also am currently enjoying Voyage Century  even with all its bugs to tide me over.

Another game that looks like it will be very  good is Pirates of the Burning Sea. (Gotta love the Pirate theme).

A few other indie type games that have potential are the Holocaust/Apocolyptic games coming out Fallen Earth and Ruin Online.

I am keeping my hopes up that at least 1 or 2 of these games will actually be good and not something that is pushed out the door in a broken bug infested state of mess with little or no content that most mmorpgs seem to be these days.

Not me...sitting here waiting for Warhammer and Age of Conan.  What else can they do?  The have Sci-Fi crap...sux, they have super-heros...sux.  What's next a western?  Fantasy owns....plain and simple.  Go play The Sims online.
  • BattleshipBattleship Member Posts: 62

Heh, I would love it if they made a western mmopg.  Train robbing, gold mining, calvary charges, high noon gun duels, Most Wanted posters, cowboys, Mexicans, & Indians...Wow I am surprised somebody hasnt made one yet. Who wouldn't want to play a character in a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne movie? I think it would rock!

That doesn't make any sense.  You could take world of warcraft and just change everything in it to be sci fi, it wouldn't make the game less fun (Except that alot of people playing it might have heard of it from the old warcraft games, in which case just substitute starcraft for warcraft)

All sci fi games so far have just been bad.  AO...  Star wars is hardly classifiable as sci fi given that the force is basically magic and lightsabers have no explanation

Yet you mention starcraft, protoss have powers in a way, and what the hek is wrong with star wars? I think you need to get past the fiction insecurities because its called sci fi not science, now I agree I think we need a space planet to planet exploration game with elements of magic, ships, and big laser guns pew pew.

Yes: historical ships, cannons, pistols, real nations, ship combat, rum, incans, pirates.

Fantasy stuff is definitely overused and saturated... but sci-fi (including post-apoc) also doesn't really keep my interest for long...

We should start making MMORPGS with modern setting (Shenmue) or modern with mythological overtones (Persona series).

I am bored of it myself. That won't stop me though from buying WAR when it comes out because even though it has orcs and elves the overall plot and theme is not so cherry and black and white. I would like to see a Vampire, Cyberpunk, or out right Sci-Fi MMO come out that does not suck. I think the industry needs some fresh MMO genre that are successful other then the Elf and Orc fantasy genre.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

I've felt this way for a long time.

I hate: High Elves, Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs, Gnomes, Trolls, cat people, dog people, any other kind of non-people people, giant spiders, giant ants, fireballs, ice balls, lightning balls, neon spell effects, potions, floating objects, magic armor, and pretty much everything else that makes high fantasy high fantasy.

Medieval settings are excellent but not after they've been changed into high fantasy.

And i too would like to see a post-apocalyptic zombie MMO.
