Necro Pet Question

OdenathusOdenathus Member UncommonPosts: 605

I started a Necro, without really thinking... I just wanted a pet class to camp out on newbie island... but I've really grown to like this one! With only 20 hours of casual play, I'm level 20 and have yet to grey out ANY of my quests! This is great!

My question; I had Summon Servant pet spell. But at level 20 I acquired Grim Spellbinder. Now without thinking, I would have just started using the new pet. But I noticed on my Alternate Abilities Tab, there are actually 3 pet indicators, Tank, Warlock and Rogue.

Are the pets really that different?
Should I just use the Grim Spellbinder because it's my NEW pet?
Or should I be summoning pets based on encounter type (tank vs caster vs rogue)?

Thanks :)

My dog barks some. Mentally you picture my dog, but I have not told you the type of dog which I have. Perhaps you even picture Toto, from "The Wizard of Oz." But I warn you, my dog is always with me.

Fighter pets have lower damage output, a lot more hit points and can taunt to hold aggro just like a tank. They can function as an emergency tank for a group but won’t perform as well as a real fighter.  They are most commonly used for solo play, pet taunts, you DPS&heal.

Scout pets have fast melee attacks and high single target DPS. They have medium hitpoints and can be useful for solo single mob encounters. If you have a good one it’s DPS against a single target is higher then yours so it can hold aggro. These are the best all around pets IMO.

Mage pets have the lowest hit points plus a lot of ranged and AE attacks. Very nice for AE encounters, or cases where you need the pet to stay at ranged. They can’t tank, so if you use them solo you need to keep the mob rooted and the pet at range using the .ranged command.  Since pets don’t know how to pace themselves mage pets can pull a lot of aggro because the tank typically don’t have a strong hold on anything but their primary target.  They can also AE through walls and pull aggro that way. If you have a group that can hold aggro and are doing AE friendly fights you can put up incredible DPS with a mage pet.

You also get a debuffing pet in your AA lines, which is mostly good for raiding IMO but I have seen it used in groups. Conjurers get a healer pet in their AA lines instead of a debuffer, it’s handy as a backup or second healer and also can see some action in raids.

Yes the pets are that different.  Don't cast your mage pet and expect it to hold aggro and survive for very long.  It might take a few hits before dying.
