First off, this is not a flame as I play the game and am simply making what I feel to be a personal observation.
After reading some of the threads on travel and a reduced death penalty as well as increased experience and reduced challenge on some NPC's it honestly made me think as little as to why the game tauted as "hardcore" was as some players stated "caving in" to the masses.
The fact that they (Sigil) cite their reasoning behind the changes as a motivation to get the player base to a higher level to be closer to the level they projected we would be at this point in time. Then I started to think about the changes their projecting and the reasons that they are "needed".
Travel:
It's not even so much the long trips, its what happens on the trips that many of us find annoying.
- Pet classes still tend to randomly loose their pets when crossing chunk lines, then get attacked by mobs while trying to cast a new pet or just being annoyed at having to have the group wait up while they make a new pet almost every chunk.
- "Cloud Walk" (Levitate) makes players disappear to only a target ring in most indoor zones and caves after chunking.
- Group members still get randomly disbanded when chunking from time to time, in a full group, obviously this happens more. Obviously if your traversing a zone of your appropriate level with a high density of mobs, this poses a greater problem.
- Performance issues change a players FPS from 30 to 5 depending on the spots in a chunk creating warps and lag that make it so traveling long distances makes it difficult to appreciate the work that went into the graphics and changes it into a long frustrating journey instead.
Grouping:
- Lately, my friends on my friends list don't show up when I log in. Even doing a "Who all" with their name results with "0 players online", then with any luck I run into them while hunting.
- The fellowship system is still not in the game so if I have more time to play than my friends, I quickly out level them and can no longer group easily with them. I either have a choice to out-grow my friends (ones made in the game) and try and make new ones or keep making new alts to play which gets old rather fast. Increasing the experience may help them catch up, but does nothing for me.
- LFG...say no more.
Conclusion:
- If traveling was not filled with so many bugs and performance issues, people would not object so much to a 15 minute run to meet up with friends.
- If there were not so many game issues that cause deaths, we could handle the deaths that we incur by our own actions with the current penalties in place as I can say in my case, they would be at least 1/2 the amount.
