Depends on what you use to format the drive. Some programs will completely zero a drive. I also have an old tool used to zero and clean a drive. Just take the drive out of the computer, plug it into the wiper, then hit the switch. When the light is green the drive is zeroed out completely and free of viruses.

You mother and grandmother in other words

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I beg to differ. I have a program that does 25 full binary wipes on the hard disk. Now if any virus survives that, well, it deserves to stay in my opinion.

I don't believe there are many that can survive a reformat.  Most formats do not completely zero the drive so the data is sill there.  But, with a new file allocation table, the old data has no way of assembling itself into anything.  The separate blocks of data have no way to reorganize themselves.  Sure if you are paranoid you can use a format program that zeros your drive, but I feel safe enough doing a regular format.

To the three answers to my comment,

That's all still a bit more than just formatting, A simple format will not remove all viruses, Third party tools can be used, as you say. Also repartioning a drive will not remove every virus, it's true that many viruses will not survive but there are enough of them that can, which is why it's always a good idea to find out exactly what virus you do have and if it stores itself in the bootstrap and to use the proper tools to remove it rather than just a simple format c:

You should also remember that while you may know how to use these tools not everybody has the technical knowledge to do so (especially someone who resorts to using a hammer on their harddrive). Telling someone that a simple format will solve all their problems can be very misleading.
