Edit: oh most over hyped is EQ2 but thats becasue I dont like SCEA.
No way you can argue that WoW is by far the most over-hyped game in history. That's not to say it won't be a good game, but I don't see how it can possibly live up to the extremely high expectations of the vast populace.
Outside mmorpg sites CoH is virtually unknown.
A good majority of mmorpgers never even visit a website apart from occasional spoiler ones.And then they go direct to their game eg alka EQ or whatever.
So really I doubt CoH is very hyped(not judging if it is a good or bad game just stating it is not well known).
Try logging into SWG or DAoC and mention CoH.Most have never heard of it.A few more would have heard of lineage2 but again a vast majority have not.
A good majority have heard of EQ2 and WoW.So those are the highly hyped games.
Of the 2 I say WoW is the one really hyped up and I fear folks heading for a real dissapointment.

Actually I change my mind.Most over hyped game is SWG.
Yeah not a terrible game but not near its hype meter.I mean come on if you were there at launch you could not even log in.They had to open a new server almost every day because of the crowd.In the first 2 weeks to get your hands on a copy of SWG from the online shops was impossible all sold out.You had to go to ebay or some rural shop to find a copy.It was that popular.
An hyped game? Don't make me laugh.... Guild War never been mentioned... and yet people tell me it's the best when all we saw are some screen shot and some promise from their creator.
Now talk about an hyped game!

WoW by far...
but im by no means saying it wont be a great game... im simply saying its very overhyped... i see kids who have never even played an MMORPG before (even a few kids who thought it was still a strategy game
) and have seen nothing more then a few screenshots and the word "warcraft" yet think its the greatest thing since electricity and nothing else could compare...

I disagree about City of Heroes being the most over-hyped. If you think it is not popular, I suggest heading over to their forums and looking at all of the people who are actively paying attention to that game. I think it will do great. As for my opinion, Lineage 2 is just not my type of game. Like someone said above, the level grind is HORRIBLE.....

SWG is the most overly hyped game around
Without question, WoW is the most overhyped game right now. There are 100,000's of people waiting patiently to play this game and the people who are in Beta are saying the game is awesome. Most people are having a ball with WoW and say it's lots of fun every time they play. I think the game will live up to the hype.
The most overhyped game that has fail would easily go to Horizons. Everyone was screaming how great this game was at the E3 and after it was released it was missing more then 1/2 of what it advertised on the box.
The game is CRAP.
The most underhyped game right now would be Guild Wars. People are hearing about it, but many gamers don't even know what it's about. I think it might be a sleeper hit. Other sleeper hits may be "The Saga of Ryzom" and Middle Earth Online. We'll see though.

They are ALL overrated before they come out.
They have to be.This genre of entertainment is second only to hollywood in terms of marketing.Remember how overdone SWG was?If they had a perfect launch i think most would forgive them that.They hid details of the game from the general public.The details that did "leak" out were mostly about jedi's.
But look at the background of SWG and what companies were involved in it.1st you have the starwars franchise.The Marketing for those movies had a HUUUGE budget.Then you have sony developing it right?George Lucas AND sony?
It was like a deal with satan from the get go.If i remember right it was the single largest preorder on amazon.com.
It's a sad fact but most developers learned marketing101 from the overhyped and underproduced SWG.

LoTR game=Overhyped horrid crap that promises nothing new but redundancy with Frodo. Where its main thesis is non-pvp interaction, slaughtering 500 orcs for your next level, collecting mithril for an ubersuit. And smoking virtual pipe weed.

Well I'd say that most games receive a lot of hype, especially since the gaming industry now, at least I believe I'm correct, is second only to the movie industry now in entertainment. Of course software companies are going to hype their product and get in bed with game sites and gaming mags to say "...we've got this game being developed that is going to be the most original and best to date..." There are a few that come out each year that still manage to surprise us, but just a few.
K, most over-hyped, L2. L2 good graphics and all, but geez the level grinding.
A sleeper this year might be SoR, Saga of Ryzom btw if u read this and haven't heard of this mmorpg yet. Personally, I've been playing SoR in open beta, and it has promise. I'll have to wait till I play it more and more of the game is released to develop a final opinion.
SWG is the most Overhyped game that was a total dissapointment so far I think.
By the end of the year I don't really know, L2 is a total flop and but it's not that extremly hyped either..
WoW is more hyped than any game before, but it also seems to be a very solid game, so can maybe live up to the expectations or atleast close to it..

I don't think horizons was over hyped.After it went out of production in 2001 most lost intrest.Again it is one of those games no one outside a few mmorpg heard of.
