The Dwarf Love!

I've been reading through a few threads that ask the race/class popularity question, and I amongst others have noted that there seems to be little Dwarf love out there. Plenty of people are going to play as Greenskins (and who wouldn't?) on release, but there might be a small, outside chance that fine Dwarfen targets may be a little thin on the ground, compared to the other Order races of Empire and High Elves. So I'm posting this to talk Dwarfs up a bit and find out if there are many people out there who are looking forward to avenging the many wrongs suffered by the once-mighty Dwarfen Clans and are willing to put a Dwarfen axe or hammer where their grudge is.

Playstyle

From the looks of things, Dwarfs are going to be the one of the most In-Your-Face-Melee race's out of all the options we will have. They have little in the way of spellwork, as Dwarfs totally mistrust magic, preferring instead the ancient art of Rune Smithing as taught to them by their ancestor Gods. They put their faith in the bones of the earth, the stone under their feet, and the iron they can expertly work into formiddable weapons and mighty suits of finely-crafted armour. If you're looking for a good race with a great deal of character who will spit in the eye of their enemies before smashing them apart, then Dwarfs certainly fit that description.

An armoured Dwarfen defensive line should inspire a certain amount of trepidation in their enemies. Because of their small stature, Dwarfs are slow runners, so they prefer their eneimes to come to them to be broken upon the wall of armour, axes and hammers - with a few well-placed hand grenades, bombs and cannon shot thrown in for good measure. In the tabletop game, Dwarfs were almost immovable warriors; extremely difficult to get to flee in battle, because of their resolute nature. And if a Dwarf holds a grudge, they're almost impossible to remove from the battlefield other than killing them ouright - which is often difficult to achieve.

It's this exact nature you should expect from Dwarfs in WAR, as it ran very deep within all the tabletop games that Games Workshop ever made. They were one of the most fearsome armies to play against because they were so tough, so fearless and so well equipped with powerful runic weapons and armour. On top of that, all Dawrfs have a natural magical resistance to spells in the TT games - and whether or not Mythic will carry that racial trait into WAR, we will have to wait and see.

Humour

I've never laughed so much in a game as when I read the excellent Games Workshop literature based upon Dwarfs. Like Greenskins, they have a wealth of humorous lore and shenanigans that accompanies everything they do. They're supposed to be dour and grim, but somehow it all ends up as dark, tongue-in-cheek humour - especially when BEER is concerned.

Dwarfen sense of humour can be especially unnerving for other races. A common Dwarfen jest usually takes the form where two or more Dwarfs conspire to make another feel deeply uncomfortable and suspcious by pretending to know something about his circumstances, state of health, or past life. This can go on for hours, days or even years and is generally reckoned to be very funny indeed by Dwarfen standards. More commonly a Dwarf will make a prevocative statement (like calling him a Kruti *), wait for another to take offense, and then start a fight. Surprisingly these things tend to end in good humour, with much back slapping, beer drinking and mutual congratulations with honour considered to have been satisfied all round.

* (Kruti = A Dwarf suffering from Krut - A discomforting disease contracted from mountain goats - An insult.)

Expect your questing life in WAR as a Dwarf to be a funny and entertaining one - no matter what profession you choose. Mythic has so much ingrained lore, character and humour to draw upon for this race that it'd be extremely surprising to me if they left it out of the game. I think Dwarfs will be "the other side of the coin" to Greenskins in many respects, and will easily be as much fun to play. My best advice is to try and forget what you've seen of this race in other MMO games, because they don't have the same "feel" as Warhammer Dwarfs do - and any old Warhammer vet would tell you the same, I bet.

I'm already mostly decided that I will roll on the Order side first for WAR, and I will include a Dwarf character or two in my stable. My Ironbreaker will likely be one tough tank to bear the brunt of a Greenskin charge, and that will suit me just fine. It remains to be seen whether many people will try a Dwarf first, but I'm hoping so.

I'm planning on making a Dwarf runepriest. With little information on classes as well as the high and dark elves classes not being revealed yet, The runepriest seems to be topping my list. I like the idea of inscribing runes on others weapons, armor, or even skin and waiting for the effect to trigger. I've never been a big fan of dwarves but I'm definantly interested to see how the runepriest class unfolds.

Although in all honesty, all the classes are looking good at this moment. As i said, runepriest is in the lead as to what my first character will be but as more information comes out that might change very quick, Cause the Orc Choppa is looking good too.

Nicely put. I've personally never understood why people play Dwarfs (or Dwarves in any other game) so little, except kids. Really, what's wrong with them? I can understand great love of Elves (beauty, knowledge, yes we all want to have it) and of Men (easiest to associate with), but it's always been a mystery to me why orcs, goblins, trolls and such are so loved. Basically, in every single MMORPG there is number of 'bad guys' seriously outweighs the number of 'good guys'. Moreover, more often than not serious players tend to creat evil characters. This is a complety mystery to me.

As to WAR, I'm glad to see Mythic do their best to make Dwarfs as attractive race to play as possible. Kudos to them for this. I have next to none knowledge of Warhammer setting, but from what I've heard their lore is pretty good albeit similar to usual Dwarves in other games. Then again, there's only so many changes you can make to the good old "stocky, goodnatured, always angry and always willing to fight dwarves". I agree with you completely that Dwarfs are going to be very strong melee combatants. Hopefully someone will finally do thing properly and make Dwarfs the strongest fighters, not equal to Men and Elves.

    I cannot explain the sadness
    That's fallen on my breast.
An old, old fable haunts me,
And will not let me rest.

I'll tell you why so many people don't want to play dwarves: they're frickin tiny! Also their big helmets look kind of dorky. If I spend a good chunk of time getting a dwarf to the top rank I'm rewarded by a dorky helmet and a long beard. These aren't exactly the kind of things I look for. Imagine bragging to noobs "LOL My beard is 6 ft and YOURS is 3 FT LOL noob!"

Good point, but surely goblins look no better, don't you think? In fact, they look like ugly green kids to me. And orcs in WAR don't look like humanoids to me at all with their huge mouths and little angry eyes. Dwarfs' armor looks nice to me since it's inscripted with runes and I like them so much. I think chaos guys look simply astonishing though, I'd surely play one if I wanted to be evil.

I will never make a dwarf character.  Don't get me wrong, I've always loved dwarf lore, whether it be from Warhammer or old school pen and paper D&D.  They're entertaining, and they deserve a spot in the game.  But the fact is, I've always enjoyed killing dwarfs more than playing them.  Especially in the Warhammer world, as a former Skaven TT player I loved killing dwarfs, and I imagine that will translate in one form or another.

I think part of my problem is the playstyle associated with them.  In most games I've played, dwarves are all about sitting in a nice formation, not moving and waiting for the enemy to come to them, then smashing them to a pulp.  It can be very effective, but for me it's also dismally boring.  I have no love for elves either, but their hit and run, fast attack style has always appealed to me.  I hope that a lot of players do choose dwarf characters, they do their defined jobs very well, but I will not be one of them.

Bah I can't choose between Orcs, Empire or Dwarves.

Luckly the other 3 races are poncey Elves and poncey evil Elves and I hate Chaos because their not grey just evil.

Lucky Lizardmen or Wood Elves aren't in yet, yes I can stand Hippie Elves.

Empire Witch Hunter, Empire Warrior Priest, Black Orc, Goblin Squig Herder, Dwarf Hammerers, Dwarf Engineers.

Funny. When Mythic began the first steps towards the game, they thought (not sure if they still do) Orks would be the most underpopulated "realm" and Empire witch hunters would be running all over the place.

Im telling you right now by release the best class with the coolest abilities will be in the most underpopulated realm as a form of ballance. I have said this in a few other post, but I will say it again. As of Current beta the strongest class in the game is iron breaker the dwarven heavy tank and hammerer (light tank) is perhaps the 3rd or 5th best class. (course this is perhaps ballanced out by the fact that runepriest was the weakest)

i recon people love dwarves cus they are so little, tough, willing to take on the big guys (orcs), the love beer, they wear sweet armour, they pwn at melee,  seeing rows and rows of heavily armoured short people come screaming towards you us enough to creep anyone out.  dwarves just rock XD

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

In tabletop dwarves are easily the most popular.
  • GodliestGodliest Member Posts: 3,486

I thought the Dwarfs were gonna be the most popular race on order side. It seems like some of the biggest fans of Warhammer were gonna play Dwarfs anyway... but maybe I'm wrong. I don't mind, dwarfs are so ugly, imo.

    Hey Kraiden,

This sounds about right to me, though I haven't heard of anything before about imbalances as it exists right now. I'm sure Mythic will iron most of that out for release though. My first choice of Ironbreaker was due to the fact that Greenskins are likely to be very offensive, like they were in the tabletop game, and I thought it would be fun being picked on by the huge Black Orc and Orc Choppa players. The Ironbreaker is likely to be the epitome of the Dwarfen character too - stubborn, tough, gritty, and wearing the kind of extremely detailed armour that we've seen in screenshots - it just all appeals to me.

I think Dwarfs might be underpopulated on release because they lack a "cool" factor - like Chaos, or an Empire Witch Hunter, Priest of Sigmar and most likely the Dark Elves and High Elves too. Even greenskins have them beat in this department, because they're just - well, pure fighting machines - and if I remember right, at one time they were the most popular army on the warhammer TT battlefield. Being cool is one thing, but being respected (or even feared) as one tough opponent is quite another, and that should be the Dwarf's boon, imo. - As long as Dwarfs aren't totally imballanced aginst the other races, this should be just about right I think.

Anyway... glad to see a few out there who're going to cross out a few names from the Great Book of Grudges  I'll definitely be there, swinging my axe, and I might bring a nice cask of Bugman's finest XXXX too - if yer lucky.
