Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS), the world's
leading interactive entertainment company, today announced that it will
bring the highly-anticipated Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game,
Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) to major Asian regions,
including Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan. Based on Games Workshop's
Warhammer fantasy universe, Warhammer Online features next generation Realm
vs. Realm (RvR) game play that will immerse players in a world of perpetual
conflict.Developed by EA Mythic, the studio credited worldwide with revolutionizing
the online gaming space with the award winning Dark Age of Camelot, the
Warhammer Online Realm vs. Realm system has players joining one of six
Armies - the obstinate Dwarfs, the noble High Elves, the loyal humans of the
Empire, the savage Greenskin, the corrupt Dark Elves and the marauding human
worshippers of Chaos - to experience the truly epic nature of WAR. RvR
combat takes place on three battlefronts where an unending war is waged for
control of vital resources and territory. WAR also features an innovative
Public Quest system and a massive City Siege Campaign that allows players to
sack and pillage an enemy capital. In addition, WAR integrates both Player
vs. Player (PvP) combat zones and Player vs. Environment (PvE) quests on the
same map for the very first time.

I'm sure it will do just as well as all other western mmorpg's in asia, which is not.
nobody knows the asian mmorpg market on this forum as well as I do, because I'm pretty much the only one who can be bothered to do some research on it.. WAR is going to flop in asia. EQ2 also felt similar as WoW, guess what? Its widely considered the biggest western flop in asia.
people were prepared to give WoW a chance because of Warcraft. in general, western games don't do well in asia, its an issue that has nothing to do with the quality of the games. Not to mention the game will be directly competing against Ragnarok 2 and Aion, made by gravity and NCsoft, two extremely popular companies in asia. no way WAR even has a chance.

Then the fact that it will have superb PVP will sustain it in the Asian Market.
Plus it won't be directly competing against either of those games. They both have an art direction similar to Lineage, where as WAR has an art direction similar to WoW. WAR will be popular with the WoW PVP players.
I will state right here and now and go on the record that it will not flop.

Secondly in most of the Asian market Warcraft wasn't even that big of a game. Starcraft was. So you can't say that they loved the Warcraft universe over there. What they love is the ability to PVP. (which most western MMO's do a horrible job at)
So for that very reason and then the fact that it looks similar to WoW will play in the favor of WAR.

Has a Warhammer MMO been released in Asia in the past? That is the only proof you could have that would prove it. Otherwise all you have is your guess which isn't worth anything.
These companies have market analysts that research these decisions. It is not worth it to them to launch without significant reasoning showing that they would have a shot at doing well in the market. Otherwise they would be throwing their money away. And EA is not in the habit of throwing money away.

"In March 2006, SOE announced that it would end its Chinese/Korean operations for EverQuest II, which were being supported in the region by Gamania. The beta period for the game in China/Korea ended on March 29, and on March 30, all Chinese/Korean accounts were moved to the US servers of the game."
Everquest 2 was found to not be viable in the Eastern market while still in the Beta Stages. So they knew from market research that the game would not be financially successful.

Maybe the fact that every western mmorpg that ever came to the east has done "okay" to poorly?
The only mmorpg that ever was successfull is Warcraft, which already had a big following before that, hence more eastern were prepared to give it a try.
Those same market analysts also came up with E&B and Motor City Online, guess what happened to them?
thats right. They closed. well done market anylysts!
I put more faith in my own judgement then EA's market analysts. I spend most of my time checking the asian mmorpg market instead of the western, because the western mmorpg market is so incredbly small.
At the moment, I'm more looking into the south east asian market. very intresting, you should give it a try.

I can think of maybe 3-4 total. So there is a 25% to 33% chance of success. That is way better odds then opening a new restaurant.
You really have a very very closed minded view of Western MMOs. Which is fine you are an Eastern MMO fanboy. Just embrace who you are. But don't think for a minute that you are open minded at all. You have extreme tunnel Vision and one of these days soon you will be completely taken aback by your lack of vision.

I'm not the one being closed minded at all, I simply stay realistic. I don't jump on the "OMG WAR will be the next big thing!" fan. If not thinking WAR will be a huge success = close minded in your view, then that says more about you then me.
But I think your quite funny. now you hint that I'm an eastern mmorpg fanboi for thinking WAR won't do well in Asia, a few days ago you called me a WoW fanboi because I did not agree that WAR would take a significant number of subscribers from WoW.
Its proof for me that your oppinions and posts should not be taken serious. you have no knowledge of the mmorpg market whatsoever.
don't even bother writing a reply to my posts, I won't read it. I'm not intrested in what you have to say, I only discuss with people can have a realistic view on the subject.
So, if some people say WoW had a chance because the Warcraft RTS series was so succesful, has anyone ever checked how well Dawn of War and other Warhammer games have done? I know DoW is about 40k but the lore draws similar inspiration, one that seems very western indeed.

You act like all Other Western MMO's will be lucky to hit EQ1 numbers and should really shoot for more around 250K-300K. (Even though the Market now has 10's of millions of potential customers, compared to the less then 1 million potential customers when DAoC, EQ1, AC, UO, Etc were all released).
You seem to dismiss the fact that currently there are easily over 4 million MMO players in NA alone. There are closer to 10 times that number in Asia. And around that same number in Europe.
So out of those 30-50 million MMO players who are looking for games to play they aren't going to play the newest game on the market built from the ground up for PVP? I find that to be a very close minded view.

What you don't have a right to is referencing all of this fictional "Proof" as you call it and stating your opinion as some type of fact. People who do that without any real proof are known in society as fanatics. Or here on the boards as Fanboys.
There was no proof to show that WoW would be successful. Just as there is no proof to show that WAR will or won't be. Just like there is no proof that LOTRO will or won't be, or AoC, or Aion, or Guild Wars 2, etc etc etc.
About the closest thing to making a statement about the future of an MMO and having proof would be to say that a new Star Wars MMO wouldn't do well.
See that has proof, based on the fact that a previous Star Wars MMO failed pretty badly.
Basing the performance of new games that have no history in the Genre is nothing but a bad guess. (and if you notice I never said they will do that well all I said was that it wouldn't fail, and all I have said as well was it was possible for them to do well.)

Related to this, does anyone know how popular the Warhammer tabletop games are in Asia? If they've been selling well then the MMORPG will have a fanbase to start, but I don't know if I've ever seen a Korean version of the White Dwarf
Edit - I was curious so I did a quick search. The Internet is an amazing thing

If you read the summaries, the 'Asia Pacific' market is actually Australia and New Zealand. They say they had to close their SIngapore stores and were only just opening the first one in Tokyo 2 years ago.
Hmmm, sounds like there isn't much of a fan base in Asia itself unless things have changed in the last couple of years. Can anyone find the 2006 report?

How exactly are you saying a game will be popular with asians, then call someone an eastern game fanboy once they say they don't like the game? Shouldn't it be that his opinion is more validated because he is more intune with eastern culture?
Still I agree with Gameloading, flop in the making. They just aren't taking the market seriously in asia. Each market in asia plays games for different reasons, you really have to be able to tell what that is and cater to them. Most importantly you have to treat each market specially. Thats one thing they don't seem to be doing when they just toss all the countries together like that. It seems more like a second thought.
Obviously any market analyst will be able to tell that the Asian Market is big money, but unless you put the effort into getting those customers you won't get any of it.
