Which RTS should I get?

Hi, I wanna buy a new RTS game after playing Warcraft 3 for almost 5 years.

I want one where it's easy to play in multiplayer. Warcraft 3 was nice because Battle.net was working perfectly and it was always easy to find a group, and never took more than 2-3 minutes. I don't care much about the single player aspect.

I want a RTS where games last between 20-35 minutes in average, kinda like Warcraft 3.

Right now, I'm hesitating between :

-Warhammer 40k

-CC3 Tiberium wars

-Company of Heroes

Which one is the best for multiplayer? Should I consider other RTS than these three?

Thanks for your recommandations!

Have you downloaded the demos of those games? I've been played demos of all those games and was also in beta for CoH. I liked CoH a lot. The tiberium demo was kinda lacking/shallow, so I don't know if the real game is better or not.

It's just kind of the nature of Command and Conquer games to be fairly straightfoward.  I have only played Warhammer 40k of the games that you listed...but I've always enjoyed the game and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a solid RTS that doesn't go overboard with micromanagement and multiplayer battles can be pretty spectacular.  I would also highly recommend that you buy either one or both of the expansion packs to Dawn of War...if you can only afford one of the two, go with Dark Crusade...it brings two new races (Tau and Necrons) as opposed to the one (Imperial Guard) brought in by Winter Assault.

While I've never played Company of Heroes, I have heard a great deal about it and it sounds like a great game...I think if you end up choosing between Dawn of War and Company of Heroes, you will be very pleased with both games, you may want to consider which type of game you would prefer, Company of Heroes is a World War 2 RTS, while Warhammer 40k is a Sci Fi game through and through...ALTHOUGH Company of Heroes does sport slightly more polished gameplay and graphics, but they are similar games because they are made by the same people.

I'd like to have more info about multiplayer in these three games:

Is it fairly easy to find a team ?

Also, does the server put you on a team and oppose you to a similar team, like Warcraft3, or you choose your own team?

    Is there ladder?
  • DraenorDraenor Member UncommonPosts: 7,918
I believe that Warhammer does have a Ladder, yes, though I've never done it myself.  Multiplayer is pretty straightforward...you go into the main lobby, and click to join a game, then you choose which game to join from that list...you can go into any of the games that you wish to go into, and whether or not you can choose your team depends on what rules the host has made.

StarCraft: Brood War is the best RTS. Oh yes... I really see no other top-notch games out there. Go retro! Go true! Go SC!

CoH and C&C 3 are both amazing games. I would get both for you, but if you had to choose just one, I would say get CoH.

Definitely go play Starcaft:Broodwar. Best RTS out there. Takes a while to get started (might wanna watch others on multiplayer) but you will pick up and is very fun. My favorite is doing Zero Clutter NR 20, that way ppl have huge armies and there are close together, very fun because very big battles. !

Company of Heroes if you like micromanagement alot.

Micromanagement is really important in this game. Let's say you play Allied, and engages 2 StuG's(Mobile anti tank gun, non rotary turret) with your sherman(Main battle tank, rotary turret). Without micromanagement, you're dead. With micromanagement, you destroy the two StuG's without taking any damage. Tanks got different armor ratings on front, sides, and rear end, so positioning is cruicial here.

Another example: The enemy got an MG squad placed in a house right next to a strategic point. You got two rifle squads. Send them both in from the front, and they'll die. Make one squad take cover in the front, and let the other squad approach from another angel, and thereafter throw a grenade in the house = you win.

It's easy to get some games going in CoH, and there is a ladder system(Win alot of battles, and you're rank will increase - Loose alot, and you'll get demoted).

It is the perfectly balanced RTS...it has a good variety of units and buildings, resource management that's important but not tedious, and each race has a very different look, feel, and presence on the battlefield.

Pluss it was the first truly great RTS's

Takes a monster of a PC to run on high graphics, and the games tend to be quite long....If this is the thread that I remember, we were asked for games that have fairly short game times, and a game in Supreme Commander can run for over an hour easily.

Do a lot of people play Warhammer? I always heard it was good but never picked it up because I figured the online population would be small.

The Online population is good enough to keep you interested.  The campaigns are pretty sweet also, but first and foremost its awesome to play with your friends.

Me and about 4 friends play through Lan, and we play it religiously.

I'm an avid Space Marine player, where my friends find there interests in other races like the Orcs, Imperial guard, Necrons, and the Chaos.

lol, Tau are pretty good, i heard they got nerfed pretty bad in the most recent patch...

If you can round up some good anti-infantry units you can hold them down or crush them.  But the Kroot are just so bad ass.

two sets of broadside battle suits, three crisis battle suits, pathfinders, two sets of fire warriors, both heroes, two hammerheads, three skyrays, one greater knorloc = complete and total ownage of absolutely any army in the game.

lol, thats a superb army, but I dont think thats any stronger then any other team in Tier 4 personally...

    SM good..

    Nightbringer is awesome..

    Avatar????

    Baneblade????

im sure any of them could reek havoc on that tau army with ease..

I had a huge friggen dissertation on how to use that army to own anything in the game, but the stupid website ate it...basically, entrench your broadsides, put your units in a sort of V formation (with the opening facing the enemy) and then just have at it...use skyrays to kill groups of infantry, use the ethereal to air caste strike the center of their army, and be sure to paint whatever HQ unit they are using...two hammerheads and a set of broadsides will make short work of anything in the game, including Necron Monoliths.  The Nightbringer is just one of those things that any army is going to just have to wait out, good micro will minimize losses...baneblades don't stand up to this army very well at all, as their primary anti vehicle weapons are fairly short range, and the hammerhead's range is quite long...by the time the baneblade gets close enough it will be at 70%ish health and the broadsides will be hitting it as well.

Can you say "Earthshaker" with me?  There is no perfect force, and anything that plans on being stationary is in serious trouble.
