I was wondering, why someone would spent say 10.000 US$, to build a club in Second Life. Why invest anything in Second Life, when you could invest the same in the real?
My question is, what makes it different, why in a synthetic world, why not get out and into the real world and realize the things you realize in second life?

I actually sell stuff in SL, as a secondary job it's great money. If I did devote full time to it I probably could match my salary. I started off with $15 month investment for land and haven't look back since. I know I'm one of a handful making good money there but if you have decent sense of business or have a creative mind the potential is there.
Second Life is really a Second Life. You can put like 1,000 US$ into buying Land and making a shop. Lets say you make Shirts and clothing ok? Lets say you price your shirts at like 100-150 L$ a shirt?(I think that used to be the average cost if I remeber?) And you meet alot of people and sell shirts, make more, over time it adds up. 1000L$ is equal to like 5 US$? or something like that. So you sell 1000 shirts, 300 hats, 450 pants over a month and get like 225,000L$ (If I did my math right) Then that would be like 1250 US$. For a profit of 250 in the first month.(If you actually meet people and spend time making clothing before you open the shop.)
Lets say 200-250 dollars give or take a few, I am not positive the monthly fee for land but it would probibly be like 20-50 US$ a month. So The first month you get 200 dollars lets say ok, yeah its not alot but for playing a game that is a good ammount of money for a month. Now after the first month of building up your name and contact base you already spent the money needed on the shop, now you have to advertize. Your making 225,000 a month, so maybe get 10-15 people to wear your clothing and pay them(There are also fashion shows that are set up by people or major clothing desiners.) 1000L$ each per month, that costs like 15,000$ L a month but you will get your name out for the next few months and after maybe 4-5 months you could be making over 400,000L$ a month which converts into 2,000US$. This would have to be almost full time and It is really hard to be sucsessfull in this game but making 22,000$ a year is alot. I met this guy who had his own part of town(Forget name now) and he made this thing called the sex bed, which macroed sextual positions(I know really dumb) But he owned a Mansion and had his own jewlery, clothing, furnurature, and sex beds. His stuff was all over clubs everywere after a while and he had to be making like 600,000-750,000L$ a month, almost 40,000US$ a year, if not more.
Just before I stopped playing I knew another guy who was the first person to create a Space Ship. I dont know how it is now or how populated it is but I gaurantee he made a fortune off of it.
Pretty Much its an amazing game. People actually are like living a life in the game. I met alot of people on there that were rich as crap. I just hope the come out with a version for Vista because I love the game.

You asked, "why not invest in real world dreams?" I don't disagree with you. Everyone should invest in their future, be it a 401k, college fund, stocks, bonds, real estate, but these all require different levels of capital investments and very greatly in their exposure to financial risk.
Here is an idea of the cost of investing in a real world night club. It takes a minimum of $100,000 to $1 million to get serious about it. A $10,000 - $60,000 with get you started as a small business owner with a little boutique or franchise.

I have some questions for you...Why invest in SL when you could actually use that money for good? I mean, you obviously have extra money floating around somewhere if you are using it to create cartoon junk in a cartoon world...instead of doing that and making the creators of this game rich, why not give that money to kids with cancer or some fund to help the widow(er)s of fallen soldiers? Why just give your money away and sometimes never see it again? At least if you are going to lose money giving it to people that need it, you are improving your real world and helping real people with very real problems. Giving your money to SL just helps out the game creators.
Heaven, so does giving your 15 bucks a month to Blizzard, to SOE, to CCP, to any other MMO company. Why invest such money monthly to a company for digital, intangible objects you can lose any day? Because it's fun to play.
And in Second Life, MORE money is being used FOR charities. There is a charity for education, for breast cancer, for mental disorders, etc. It is a cheap, populated, popular, and open-ended place to collect money for charities.
You are technically "wasting" money every month you play WoW, EQ, EVE, or any other MMO if you REALLY believe it is a "waste" of money to invest into Second Life.
My only worry about second life is thier central banking system. Fixed currency pegs are as great a distortion in the digital world as the real world.
Is there a way to short the Linden Dollar? Obviously I can buy LL with IRL money, but I can't borrow LL and buy IRL money.
First off, I do not pay for my MMO's...so I am not wasting any money for that, I think it is kind of silly to pay real money for something so mundane and wasteful. Also, when was the last time you actually contributed to any of those 'charities' that you spoke of on SL? I doubt you do it that often. Lastly, it is really not cheap at all. When even tech support requires you to be a paying customer, it is rediculously overpriced. I wrote another thing about this elsewhere, but I am still miffed that they wanted me to pay real money just to upload a tiny postage-stamp sized texture file...like I said, they could have made it so that there was a limit, but they just wanted the money. So when everything cool costs money, even after the monthly fee, it is not that cheap. At least giving directly to places like St Jude's Children's Hospital or something like that, you know that you did your part. For all you know, these 'charities' in this 'game' are not really giving all that money to the charity. They have to give some of it legally, but they could be pocketing a lot of it. And don't give me that crap about 'the same being said for real charities' because there are a lot easier ways for the gov't to check on those, so they make sure not to do that kind of thing too much, and there are many ways to check out the validity of that charity. There is only the say-so of the people from the game to ensure your money is being placed where you want it in Second Life.
