AoC or WaR

2 upcoming mmorpgs that have the potential to knock down the overrated and overplayed WoW. Both games look great and bring about new things. The problem i have now is that i have no idea which one i will want to buy. I cant play both because then i would be on my comp all day but i just cant stand just only being able to play one of them. What are your thoughts on each game and which one would you rather choose?

If you like grinding through end-game PvE raids for gear upgrades then go with AoC.  If you're more into PvP then go with WAR...unless you can't stand the cartoony graphics in which case go for The Chronicles of Spellborn.

Oh I'm going to be flamed for this.  But it'll be worth it later when I can tell people "I told ya so!"  For now I'm just farming my Anti-Conan faction.

This guy has obviously done no research and his post should be ignored. The end game of AOC is entirely PvP and seige battles between guilds. Both WAR and AoC are PvP focused and worth a try.

    AoC > WAR

That's bullsh-t and you know it Xzen.

There WILL be PvE raiding in AoC.  There WILL be loot rewards for those raids.  The raid rewards WILL be better than anything you can get doing anything else.  So you WILL have to farm raids if you want to keep progressing your character and be competative in AoC.  And this means that PvE raiding WILL be the majority of the end-game.

The PvP will be meaningless to anyone not in a big guild because the border kingdoms are almost certainly going to be dominated by just a few big guilds on each server.

The last time I had this argument here one of the supporters on this board went to the AoC boards and actually tried to get the devs to give a clear, unambiguous answer about raid rewards versus non-raid rewards....and they wouldn't do it. <waves at Sturmrabe>

I like of concept of combat of AOC , however, WAR's combat structure (includeding class types etc) and pvp (RvR) will far far outshine AoC's. I will most likely try out AoC , but if you looking for a more soild game WAR will be it.

Mythic has made the game with pretty much oen thign in mind, fun via pvp. You can get everythign you need from PvP, no grinding , just gaming. Great idea and it will trump AoC's interctive fighting.

Oh this is a completely new Idea. Now who would have thought about comparing these two games. People will come up with so many new points about how they differ or why they like their game better. Everyone will back their opinion with facts and tons of experience in playing these games. This thread is bound to become an interesting and elaborate discussion without any flames.

I'm leaning towards WAR, but I think that's mainly because I played TT Warhammer for a long time, and I love the lore and the whole RvR system they're implementing.  It's obvious that Games Workshop is deeply imbedded in the dev process too, so I know the game isn't going to do something outrageous and completely rewrite the lore or class types.

I am looking forward to AoC too (*crosses fingers and hopes he wins beta invite).  One of my only real concerns about AoC is that lvl 1-20 (I think) is completely solo effort.  This can be nice, provide a good way to learn game without distractions, but I'm curious how long it takes to lvl from 1-20.  I don't wanna pay $15/month for a single-player game.

Whatever.  All I can say is I definitely will play both, and hopefully be able to make up my mind quickly.  I like saving my sick days for when I'm actually sick.

    Buy WAR.

I am getting tired of companies choosing to make more money by appealing to larger audience and dumbing down games for consoles.

Call me a PC fanboy if you want, cause I am, and even if AoC is the best game ever made I wont support its greedy developers.

All in all, its just my opinion, but I were you, I'd choose WAR.

Funcom, greedy, and appealing to a wide audience? As compared to Mythic with War? Don't make me laugh. Niether corporation makes my list of greedy bastards, but I know which one would win if it came down to it. Sorry, I'm afraid that  highly mature players that also have a lot of hand eye coordination, patience, and ability to plan is a pathetically small population target these days.

I'm actually hyped up about both.  I'm ready for something new.  I think Conan is going to dominate though.  With Warhammer right behind it.  I hope both succeed.

Eh, sorry to offend you but I mean any game company in general that makes what used to be PC-only games into console crap and backwards.   Thats just the way I feel and OP asked for my opinion and I gave him one.  Thats #1 reason why I'd choose WAR over AoC.  Plus, discard the "highly mature" part and you talking about a large FPS fanbase which is not pathetically small.  Besides, M rating will not keep AoC population highly mature if thats what you are thinking.

But they are both mmos none the less..so what are you trying to say? How are you suppose to compare games if you cant within the same genre? Bottom line AoC is different and WAR is really the same when simplified down to the basic features of a mmo; combat(auto attack), magic(fireballs), pvp(instanced), and setting(orcs, elves etc..)...Aoc on the other hand: comabt= 6 point combat system(real time), real time-physics based mounted combat, and formation combat. Magic= spellweaving, dark and evil magic(no fireballs, more like summoning demons and even transforming into one). Setting( its conan, no orcs HURRAY!)

AoC is being made by a company known for making the most complex MMOG on the market, by a long shot. If this was a console game porting to PC I'd agree it's probably dumbed down. But it's a PC game being ported to console a year from now. I can garentee it'll be FAR more complex then WAR.

I thought same thing until I saw a comment from a developer who recommended PC players get a gamepad.  If I find that interview I'll post the link, it should be here on mmorpg.com.  Of course, we'll have to wait and see for the game to come out to see whose wrong.

I mean HELLO, AoC is sticking to the Conan world by making a game rated Mature, that means it won't be sold in walmart and some game stores. Also they are trying to make a MMOG that doesn't stick to the same damn system as every previous generic fantasy MMOG. They are sticking their necks out, not playing it safe. If anything they are doing the EXACT opposite of what you say.

Did you never get into movie theater when you were 13 or so to see an R rated movie?  Why do you think GTA caused such a big stir if only the M audience was playing it?  Right, its because M rating games are being played by kids too but thats totally not the point.

WAR on the other hand is clearly copying WoW, with the same cartoony graphics, same basic 'easy mode' gameplay but with a focus on PvP. They want to steal WoW's thunder and theres little denying it.

I hope it is like WoW.  WoW is a good game.  Plus did you even look at any screenshots of WAR before saying its cratoony graphics? Look again, especially the new screenies where the game has lighting enabled.

If either one was trying to via for the mass market or making more money. I think the answer which one it was, would be extraordinarily obvious.

I dont have problem with companies wanting to make more money through putting popular features into the game.  But I do have a problem with companies porting crap to consoles.... yes btw I have every single console system starting from dreamcast and up to 360... wont be getting Wii and will wait better games for PS3.

I was kinda in the same boat as to which one I would dedicate myself to, so i decided i would try both but  Age of Conan is my #1 choice.

Age of Conan for sure.. If it for some odd reason just flops, I will go WAR.

Believe EA has already talked about a console version about a year after war is released.I personally prefere guild forts and cities and just about everything else about AoC.I am however, cautiously optimistic about its game engine.

AoC is being made by a company known for making the most complex MMOG on the market, by a long shot. Where in the world did you get this "factoid".... I'm sure there are many who would dispute your assertion.

I mean HELLO, AoC is sticking to the Conan world by making a game rated Mature, that means it won't be sold in walmart and some game stores. Proving absolutely nothing Also they are trying to make a MMOG that doesn't stick to the same damn system as every previous generic fantasy MMOG. I'll agree with you here.  They are sticking their necks out, not playing it safe.  You do realize that 9/10 new things fail miserably...hence so much copy-catting out there (and yes, I pulled this number out my arse for dramatic effect)

WAR on the other hand is clearly copying WoW, with the same cartoony graphics, same basic 'easy mode' gameplay but with a focus on PvP. They want to steal WoW's thunder and theres little denying it.  You are completely off base here.  WAR is the spiritual successor to DAOC... which I'm guessing you never played or you could have never made this sort of statement.  As to cartoony graphics not going to go there... too many other threads refute this assertion...I'll let them speak for themselves.

If either one was trying to via for the mass market or making more money. I think the answer which one it was, would be extraordinarily obvious. And trust me, I cant stand consoles and the effect they are having on the PC industry. IMHO the only reason AoC is going to console is because Funcom gets a big fat funding check from M$ for the development of the game.

They are going for the console market because there's so many more game players on them than on expensive gaming PC's...the next big game that dethrones wow (ie. garners more customers) will need to grab the console gamer's interest.

Honestly, I'm going to try both games... and see which one is more fun.   No reason to get so upset over which one is better...

I have faith in both Funcom and Mythic, well assuming EA leaves them alone. I plan on getting both at this point, but that can always change if either development team does something silly.

Wow, a flamewar, what a shock lol.  Only thing I have to add is this.  I wish people would stop comparing WAR graphics to WoW.  If you look at old Warhammer artwork from 20 years ago, it looks exactly like the character designs and screenies I'm seeing for WAR.  Granted, WoW will forever be known as the game that made that cartoony look well known in the mmo world, but I personally am glad that WAR is sticking with it, shows that Games Workshop is sticking to their guns and making the mmo true to their already-established games, lore, and art.  I'm sure they knew the comparisons their look would draw to WoW, but after establishing such a strong audience with their TT and RTS games, I'm happy that they're not just letting Mythic have free reign to run wild with their IP and make something radically different and unrecognizable to their pre-mmo fans.

I'm really not sure how a game aiming for a MATURE rating is competing with something like WoW and WAR which are both aiming for the "everybody and their middle-school child can play" TEEN raiting.

AoC and WAR are two totally different types of MMOs and I do not see them sharing too much of the market. Sure they'll be some overlap, but it'll be minimal a best.
