    WARHAMMER closed beta of course.

OK what do I suggest for YOU? I will echo what Sanya Thomas said to me. "come back to camelot"

You can get your fill of the warhammer IP by playing mark of chaos, but you can get a feel for the engine by playing dark age of camelot. The engine and graphics are the same, so you will get use to the "feel" before the game comes out. I was able to do quite well (in my opnion) in my runs at various beta test and trial runs.

I often consiter DAoC the best game that nobody is playing. The desolate state of the game now has nothing to do with the quality of the game, actualy much the opposite. The mass exodus of the game came because the devs came up with TOO MANY innovative ideas and introduced them all at the same time. In hindsight, the additions that they made improved the game greatly and are actually more attractive than current features in some games created after it and still around today. Its quite funny though, you log on and see only 600 people online and think to yourself, thats NOTHING, because I have 10,000 online on my wow server! 10,000 people locked inside seperate instances is nothing like  600 people with 300-400 of them all running around the same zone. Because of the games non grinding nature, the majority of the community pretty much just wants to RvR (pvp) and kill everyone else, so the frontier is packed. It really only takes 60-100 people playing in various groups accross the 3 servers to make for a fun filled game of "manhunt" .

    Sigh I miss the game.

I can also reccomend to you Pirates of the burning sea if you want some tactical sea combat. They have the RvR concept down so it can train you for WAR. Also I like the game Two worlds from what I have played and seen of it so far, as you can play a story mode or MMORPG mode, but if your an alpha geek like myself, you can link up and play the story mode with up to 8 friends! (ok imagine Oblivion  only multiplayer co-op like gears of war)

If you haven't tried it, give CoH a blast.

It's not a long term game like WoW as it's relatively simple and there's not a great deal of end game but it's a real blast and a great casual game compared to the WoW time sink with some nice PvP variety

    CoH/CoV - D-Zol/Kinslayer
    Auto Assault - Slayer
    WoW, LOTRO, DDO - Kinsul
    Matrix Online - Tempest

EVE Online I'd say, it's the only game that you can keep playing for years, even without technicaly "playing" it, and still feel you're getting some bang for your bucks. You advance all the time due to the realtime skill training. It feels like I'll never give up on EVE if they don't do something stupid that would ruin the whole game but I don't see that happening fortunately. :) So that's my tip right there, EVE Online for ya.

    Well....

I just downloaded DAoC. I figure, I might as well play a game with the same Engine as WAR.  Thats what I will be playing until WAR kicks off!

I'm much in the same position.... WoW left a crater. It was so polished, so fun (all the little things, like your toon shrugging when you'd ask a question.) And then i hit 60 and discovered WoW is nothing more than a sadistic scam designed to eliminate the last few shreds of life a hardcore gamer has left to mindlessly raid and raid and raid, everyone too hepped up about gear to stop and have any gosh darn FUN...

Have you given Ryzom a chance? (I see no mention in the thread, forgive me if I'm wrong)

I was personally taken aback, great graphics, very open-ended, and a pretty cool crafting system. It's kinda like WoW for the thinking man; with very little quest chains, and a lot of faction-based PvP. Free trial starts ya off on n00b-island, not too shabby.

There are a few issues IMHO, (no jump, requires a fairly powerful machine,) I'm not going to say "It's the best ever" but if youre looking for some methadone 'till the next shipment of smack arrives :P it very well may do ya your what-for.

I briefly checked out a game called "plane shift". This i would only reccommend for SHEER NOVELTY, as it's in alpha, LOOKS AWFUL, but it seems to be implementing some unprecedented aspects to MMO's, i couldnt help but get the feeling "this game would be worth keeping an eye on."

Anywhoo, i know these aren't the EQ2's and GW's, but i figured i'd throw out a couple more options, mabye they'll help :)

    Happy playing, comerades!

If you are waiting for WAR then go with DAoC. I played it from release up till TOA (expansion) it was the best time I have ever had in a MMO. I went back about 6-8 months ago and started on the classic servers and its like I never left. I got my character to max level in a couple weeks. Even if you don't have the time to play like I did and wanna take your time there are battle grounds for lower level characters. After about 12-16 hours played you can get into the best battle ground levels 20-24. It has people in it day and night. If you have any question send me a PM.

Yep quite a few of us are stuck here waiting on the next big game.  I hate wow with a passion. My lil brother LOVES it. I have tied 4 times now to force feed myself the game... hit 70 last week and it was like a brick wall hit me in the face. You must run 4 instances over and over to get faction so you can run the uber vesion, so that you can get gear, so that you can be accepted by a raid guild and raid. Problem is, you cant get a group to do the instance as no one pugs, and the few that do are retarded., therefore you cant run the instance, cant get the gear, and cant get in the guild... its a nasty cycle. Screw that.

I started back in 1997 with UO, best pvp system ever... sadly it was nerfed to oblivion. AC Darktide was the next decent pvp system... cheating and bugs plagued it, but was fun for several years... sadly the DT servers got older and older and game play just generaly went to hell. DAOC has been my home for about 3 - 4 years now. I keep trying to leave the game... but I cant find anything that can hold up to it.

Shadowbane's click interface, bugs, bad support, and rampant cheating make it a rather poor choice. Sure you can build a town, but when someone else can use a cheat to sack your city... not much of a point there. (I played for 5 months, woke up one morning and a enemy guild had found a way to dump our TOL money and then sacked our unprotected city, gm said tough shit, so we quit)

Lineage2 while pretty is also point and click and is the grind god of all grinds. If you manage to not kill yourself before 70 be prepared to pull for HOURS  for a %.

Coh and COV just never wee able to appeal to me... gameplay just seemed so one dimensional.

LOTRO is cool... but the pvp is rather non-existent. Sure there is monster play... but it has very little/no effect on your main toon, its completely seperate, and similar to a bg in aspect. A very cool idea... but not enough to really hold my attention. Im still trying the beta out hoping that I can find something to keep my interest... but not looking good.

So DAOC seems to be the only real answer... why am I currently not playing it? Well the problem with DAOC other than the waning population witch hasnt quite yet gotten horrible, is I played 8 man. Once you do competetive pvp on that scale its rather hard to go back to solo's and duo's.  8 people taking on 20 people and walking out victorious is a hell of a rush... and hard to replace.

Ill most likely end back up on DAOC here shortly... as there really isnt anyhting else to do that I can see for us pvp'ers. EvE is a blast... but having to pve for 6 hours to replace 1 death sucks... unless of course you want to blob(zerg) it up with 50 of your closest friends and came a gate... that... and atm as Im in between semesters, I have TONS of time 60+ hours a week... its rather frustrating to put 60 hours into eve, and get about the same out of it that the guy who puts in 10 does. Great for casual players... kind of a bummer for those of us with more time than we know what to do with.

Lineage 2 is only worthwhile to come to if you already have a high level character.  Otherwise, you'll be spending the better part of a year leveling a character up just to be able to make a real difference in PvP.  Even then, you'll go up against botted/ebayed hero characters who will harass you at every turn, because they know the company that runs the game doesn't care what they do.

My advice is to either play a game you already have an established character in, or play a game where getting to end game is fast an easy, like Shadowbane.  Ubisoft completely ruined this game over the 2 years that it had a monthly fee, but it's still pretty fun to log on occasionally(since it's free), level a character very quickly(you can get a character to 60-70 in a week with pretty good ease, especially if you have a couple of friends leveling with you), and get right into the PvP.

Try DAoC if you have the time, but make sure you choose a populated server. Lately it seems like some clusters have really low populations.

Yea WoW is done for with me too, it's just so pointless now.

AC Darktide was incredible, my best time in an MMO, then came AC2 Darktide which was also very fun but it kinda lost its power with no player drops.    WoW gave me shelter but it always takes a while to realize if you really do not like something.  DAoC is what i started in with after AC1 and I thoroughly have enjoyed it at all times, however I unfortunately didn't get much meaningful playtime on Mordred, but the little that I did when it actually had population was pretty good.

LoL i think i made it to level 30 in Lineage as an Orc and then i was done, for then I fully realized that the game was not effectively playable unless you bought #$#$loads of adena.

Yep unfortunately the game is dying. Mythic is focusing all their attention on their lovechild(warhammer). So it will only be a few more years till its completely gone. I remember when mordred had 1300 people on at peak hours :( Its a shame to see a great game like that slipping down the drain. So many hours i've put into it and so many great times i'd gladly go back and live over again. Sigh, farewell DAOC.

I hate you so much for posting this.  You got me good

Back on topic, I'm in quite a rut, too.  After WoW, I just haven't been able to find anything worth my time.  Tried CoV, EQ2 (even though i despised the first one), Guild Wars, went back to WoW, got back out of WoW, tried DAoC and, while I liked it, found no other newbies like me, and no one playing any alts.  I was enjoying that game, and the lack of a low level community killed it for me...*sigh*  Now, I lie in wait for WAR, to battle the stupid stunties and further Da Bloody Sun Boys' WAAAAGH!  I'm a bit pumped for this game

Based on suggestions from this topic, I'm gonna go ahead and try EVE.  Maybe it'll tide me over without taking my life away completely.  That's WAR's job.

    First time poster, FTW!
