Issues with real time combat in a fantasy mmo

First off there is none.AoC isn't a fps.All there revameped in house engine from Anarchy online is claiming the following.that you can select defferent locations to aim for.the engine determines if it's a hit.when firing a bow the pull time matters for damage.ala crit shot/rapid fire/regular shot. The ducking kinda stuff in the end will most likely be a shadowbane combat stance. And  even the most faithful and hopefull AoC fans must cede to gamebryo 2.2.

Fps games r alot of fun ,i prefere RO,a ww2 eastern front, more a simulator than a typical arcade style fps.

Okay im not gonna write a thesis ,but hit on what I've come across in this area(fps fantasy mmo) and open the floor to what type of mmo is more fps/real-time suited.

Atm there is a fantasy base fps ,Dark messiah, might n magic. From what i have read this 16 v 16 game is having major issues with melee classes being useless.Even with strafing halved for multi-player its almost impossible to hit with melee even a fairly new ranged player.I belive this,in RO landing a bayonet is not easy.So one would imagine it just basically becomes a caster/archer ranged game.Might as well just go bf2142.

And dark massiah is on a private server with only 32 people.

If there could be real time, perhaps a western,or a sci-fi mmo might be it.Mainly sci-fi since it would be mostly ranged based classes.sci-fi is niche anyways and pings have gotten pretty fast, and it would probably be capped at 75-100 fps.would someone with a crappy comp be at a disadvantage prolly. But this is america not Maoist China.here the rich get what they can afford and the poor(me) get what they deserve. But I think a Niche market sci-fi would be a good real time/fps like mmo option. But we are way off from a viable maintream fantasy fps/real-time mmo.

The Chronicles of Spellborn will be similar to a first person shooter in that you have to aim at your targets with the mouse.  Its still in 3rd person though.  Also PSU really shouldnt be considered a MMORPG but since its listed here... its real time combat.   The combat is real simple thoguh.

Planetside is still the only FPS I'd consider to be truly MMO (and lots of fun in its day). I'd say sci-fi and modern combat are about the only genres suitable for MMOFPS. I don't see how you'd effectively be able to get melee to work with latency issues.

MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR
    Playing: WAR

    Fury?

Also Huxley, though it's SciFi, not Fantasy.

Understandable English is your friend.  You know, periods, capitals, limited abbreviations, complete thoughts, etc.

It makes it very hard to discuss anything or really follow what you are saying when it is like this as there is about 400 different partially fleshed out ideas somewhere mixed in your post.

I intentionally write my posts with abstract thoughts, and gaming acronyms. This filters out morons with sub par info from replying or understanding the topic.Obviously it works.

As you wish.  Insult me for trying to encourage you to make your thoughts readable with understandable English.

Why should I waste time trying to decipher the poor grammar and stream of consciousness style writing when most likely there is nothing even useful in the post.  Gaming acronymns are one thing, but your writing isn't really gaming acronymns, its just terrible unreadable English.  Instead of reading your post and instantly knowing what you are talking about readers are left struggling through the bad English, unfinished tangents, and unclear points.

WW2 online wasn't to good a game. But does get me dreaming of what if it had real frontlines and lots of infantry.Imagine 6 million people in real time fighting on the eastern front.Yes, my favorite subject and I forgot all about it.

I think it's a good game, taking the circumstances into perception. A small developer team, and yet they manage to improve(Both technically and graphically) and expand the game.

They've come along way from release in 2000. If you hold the a screenshot from back then next to a screen shot from now, it'll defently look like two different games.

It's just a shame the community isn't bigger than it is, but there is still the big battles going on.. With He-111's and Ju-87b bombing the towns from the sky, Me 109's dogfighting spitfires for air supremacy, the various armored and tank units on the ground, supported by lots of infantry trying to take over the town.

well on the ww2 online. It took forever to get to a mission without a vehicle. It's just not to realist when your side always consists of 2-3 aircraft and tanks for every infantry. And the only infantry seen are usually sappers.I prefer redorchestra:ostfront, since I can get non-stop intense eastern front battles.either inf only,c/a,or tank maps.and no sup fees,i just throw a donation here and there.

It's true that there are alot of tanks compared to the realistic ratio of tank vs infantry, but aircrafts? Normaly there is just a couple up there. Only in the very important, or big(Antwerp etc) battles do i see 10+ aircrafts.

Quite a few sappers out there, but that's mainly if you look in the area around the town.. Inside, SMG's and riflemen are plentiful. Besides, sappers are normally drained within the first stage of the battle. Same for tigers, C7's etc.

Imo RO is awfull. The infantry combat is quite good, but i'm fed up with arcade tank battles. It's just not enjoyable anymore, to look at a damn life bar.. For a tank.

Agree,I hate tank maps. But if you still got RO,they totally changed the armor penetration, angles, hit location thing.IS-2,and tigers are beasts now.they can bounce shells all day from a pz3 at over 200 meters.and if you leave your driver port open you can get one-shotted if they hit it. I still don't like more than 1 tank per squad in a game. And I am WW2 fanatic, right now im reading the vintage 1952 edition of Panzer Leader by Heinz Guderian. So im all for a persistant ww2 mmo,and I agree it's a great genre.I don't wanna turn the thread into a ww2 topic, which isnt hard for me to do,ive been debating the kar98 vs the m1 garand with my friend for over 10 years  now.were getting close to each getting  a replica, and going to a field to resolve this.As he sprays and prays like a typical US soldier.I will adhere to the Wehrmacht doctrine and make my shot count. Can't wait to see his expression as my bolt fired(no-gas/blowback loss) 7.92 Rheinmettal round renders him into the fetal position on the ground.I wouldn't even have time to affix my bayonet before he expires.

See what you started.Any cool ww2 games or new info feel free to PM me.

Oblivion as MMORPG. Sadly tho, it never became so, and maybe it was best.

were talking about real/time fps type mmo's.Oblivion is way unpractical as one atm,AoC is trying to do that atm with a homemade engine.Don't bet your first born on it.

No offense, but what's the point of this thread.  Why post about a style of combat in a forum for a game that doesn't have that style of combat?  I mean you don't even mention WAR in your OP.  Hope this gets deleted soon.  :)

May I suggest the Savage series? Savage 2 in particular (Not out yet, but nearing).

    http://savage2.s2games.com/

You can try Savage 1 as well, though it is a bit dated.

    http://www.s2games.com/savage/

Anyway, these games are heavilly skill-based. It does include ranged weapons, but the main action is conducted in melee.

It also has an RTS portion in it, namely a commander that can actually build buildings and give players temporary boosts. Buildings unlock certain classes that the other players can buy with the gold theyve earned by killing other players and destroying buildings.

Back on topic: I think that these games would be a good basis for any fantasy mmofps / mmorps. Take out a bit of the ranged stuff, add in more melee, build a world, add some skills etc (You know, all the usual MMO stuff) and you got yourself a winner.

A.) Its not about AoC, its about a style of game

B.) He mentioned AoC because the difference between it and an FPS system like he is talking about is paperthin, and wanted to avoid further comparison

C.) Warhammer has nothing whatsoever to do with this thread, there is no point to mentioning it at all.
