Ugh, Help me find a decent MMORPG

retiredmjretiredmj Member UncommonPosts: 160

I'm currently having a heck of a time finding a decent MMORPG to play whether it's P2P or free, I've been looking for about the last 3 weeks (since I got my new comp).  I'm just coming off a 6 month stint with Lineage 1 which somehow I got addicted too and couldn't put down, but now I'm looking for something better.  Games I played in the past and enjoyed are:

Legends of Kesmai (wow, this was easily the best mmorpg ever for it's time)

Ultima Online (then they made the non PvP lands)

EQ (left once beastmasters came out

EQ PS2 (was fun but got tired of not being able to solo at all)

Lineage 1 (the idea of polymorphs at lvls and overenchanting items gave a reason to lvl)

My big plan was to move onto Lineage 2 when it came out but it stinks, it's just grind, grind grind, it's horrible yuck yuck yuck!      I enjoyed Asheron's Call 2 but the video lag it caused made me not want to go P2P, plus it seems so quest based, quests are a nice change from grinding but this was too much).  I tried AO didn't really like it, don't think I gave it a fair try but it seemed too out there for me.  Knight Online had terrible graphics and the same track playing a loop which drove me insane, I was thinking about trying SWG but it gets severly mixed reviews, not something I wanna gamble 50 bucks on.  And neverwinternights isn't a true mmorpg it's more of a blizzard type deal, so after all my whining about what I don't like in games.....

If anyone is still reading my rant and has any good suggestions please by all means.......

My best advice for you is to wait for World of Warcraft, Ever Quest 2, or Guild War. If you can't wait than City of Heroes is pretty decent to play for about 3-4 months.

I highly recommend playing City of Heros. It is by far the best MMORPG out to day. This is saying lot coming from me as I'm the most critical on these games. Yet I can't find any thing wrong with it. You will have a blast from time you walk in to the time you walk out. Dont take my word for it go pick up on Wed and try it out.

Im in the same boat, beta tested lineage 2, got into COh for 3 days, and i wont be playing iether of those.. there both missing everything.. its just plain grind for nothing. city of heros was really borring after about 10 levels, you cant get items/equiptment you get new skills that do the exact same dmg as before.

anyways ive played every mmorpg out there, the only game i can think of trying right now is SWG...

I played it at release for 2 weeks, and havent tried it since. is there still a huge playerbase? are there tons of bugs? has anything really changed at all?

    I might reactivate my account.

reactivated my uo account for the free 15 days... heh uo is pretty much dead completely, everyone has the best loot, gm means nothing its all items based game now. dungeons completely empty, i tried making a newie char and you have limit of gaining skills per day its crap now.

Played FFXI for 2 months but i hated the game, 3 hours lfg, no soloing and slooow paced game.

Got in risk your life beta it was crap, the game looks outdated, there was speedhacks being used by 90% of the players, and the game itself was fairly boring.

the saga of ryzoms got into this beta, and i left 2 days later, it says OPEN BETA ? i would call it alpha phase 1 because it was so crappy. id say 50-80% of these new games wont even make it to retail.

SWG is a descent enough game. Its worse point now is the community. Most of the RPers and those with a community spirit have long left the game and what you would meet is a community in a zombie state over jedis.

There are a few descent folks left  but you got to look for them. What I say give SWG a try it will probably hold your intrest for a few months till EQ2 comes out.Or try CoH which seems to be where most of us are gonna set up  shop till EQ2 or WoW comes out.

CoH this will be a big disapointment to many i think..

i got in beta, the game is plane jane. ie: no equiptment not customization after you make the char, you look the same from lvl 1 - 40. its hardcore grind like lineage 2 but its faster paced atleast.

i hear alot of people moving to CoH but i know they will be very disapointed. the game is just so plain, there is nothing new really the funnest part of the game was making the costumes forsure! there are some pretty sweet costume's but other then that i give it 1-2 weeks before your bored off your ass.

its iether: EXP or EXP! no loot no equiptment.

You might want to try Eve.  It is a space based RPG.  You would have to like PvP and want to work in teams, but the world is huge and complex, but that is part of the fun IMO.

Anyway, I have been playing my 14 day trial and have become addicted.  Depending on what you are looking for it might be for you.

I would try SWG or go back to one of the games you enjoy.  I would stay out of COH because there is absolutely no depth.  If you like to fight, fight, fight, grind, grind, grind, then you might like it.

I tried a lot of mmorpg so far and by far the best is CoH. Simply because it's fast paced, you are not limited in the movement (you can jump over fence and dive from 400 metter high building). I also love the idea of the power customization.

Ive made thing like frog man (using the jumping power set) and thing like psykick lil girl.

If you like action-rp id recommend this.

It's only draw back is that it would burn in the hand of a power gamer with no life... id say 2 week to get bored if you're a REALLY hardcore gamer... wich mean 60 hour a weeks (seriously...).

For normal gamer... like me... it would last 1-2 month (i play maximum 30 hour a weeks).

Another game that u might consider. I know you said Neverwinter is not an mmorpg but if you find server with up to 60 people u might like it.

First because it's a small comunity. When you reach max level people DO know you in your server. They fear you and competiton pvp arise often. I played Neverwinter Night for 2 year before quiting to join p2p MMORPG. I must say so far no MMORPG gave me as much as Nwn :(

    Good luck man!

If you are looking for a good PVP game try shadowbane

you can get it for 5 or 10 bucks now

the amount of  differnt ways you can make a character is incredible. The leveling is faster than other games.

And the sieging of enemy cities is fun.

imageIf ur looking for a nice mmorpg try Myth Of Soma its a good steady game pvp is good. it costs like 9-10 dollaors a month but its worth it. Practically never crashes and if it does its only for a hor or so. once u get to about lvl 30-35 lvling gets a lil tougher but overall its a good steady game, very fun lots of ppl to help u out as a nood, guilds u can even get married, craft etc
