Im in the same boat Im affraid, I think ill stick to Single play games untill a New MMO is out or untill i get (IF) into AoC beta.   I hope I do, that game looks like it has potential, but thats what people said about vanguard and LOTRO

    My Experience :  my OPINIONS

LOTRO - Played in beta, Boring... ( I know, beta.  Was a pretty complete beta IMO)

WoW - Played for a while, it is now Boring...

EVE - Boring... (Yes I did play for a while)

Anarchy Online... Fun 2 years ago.. now - Boring

EQ - No one plays... Boring  (Hours to group and barely any solo content)

    EQ2 - Boring, played for a while.

Im sure I can think of others,  whats the point though

Todd McFarlane has been involved in MMOGs in the form of monster design that was ultimately used in Ultima Online. Frank Miller's stories are extremely linear...not sure they'd translate well into a MMOG. I understand why you're saying this, from a stylistic perspective, but I don't think it would work.

the answer you seek is explained by a single word 'money'

men in suits have taken over the industry, and the only thing they have the mental capacity for is to see which games get the best numbers, then they base their games off those numbers. this gameplay will bring in this much money. Look how pathetic turbine has become. they actually had some talent back when they were introduced and made asherons call... now look at the garbage they are putting out.. DDO, LOTRO....

don't worry , good things are on the horizon.

There are many good MMO's on the market or being produces. You all should stop whining...really...WoW is an good MMO. There is an reason it has so many subscribers. So step back into reality, becouse you dislike them does not mean they aint good.

The reason there are no good mmos, is because there are no good design teams.

You have programmers, you have artists, you have money men,BUT nowhere do you actually have designers.Game mechanics come in far at the end of the list of considerations, and are often either created by programmers,or simply taken from the last mmo disaster to be pawned on the market.

Intellectual imbreeding, would be a good way to describe it.

Embracing the failure of the past, as the success of the future, would be another good description of the approach mmo dev teams take.

My opinion is simply that the Developer teams for MMORPG's now mostly believe that these games are not games, they're business opportunities and that is why they fail.... I've yet to see an MMORPG that can match the likes of SWG Pre-CU or even the offline Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, that is the kind of gameplay I expect nowadays, yet do developers do it even though they knew it to be a huge success? Nope, that is because they're too protective of their business.

And yes, there is also the case that there are many developer teams out their who are simply crap at what they do.

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

  • @ the OP: It's not that they can't make a really good MMOG...it's that they don't have to!

Publishers/Venture Capitalists are only interested in money...period. They don't have a sense of pride in the making of this game or that...it's only always about the numbers. And they know that "...you people will play anything!" as a PC games magazine editor once said in a review of Neocron 2.

MMOG pioneer Gordon Walton summed it nicely when he recently said "We're all the victims of the money men!"

But it's not just the money men...it's the gamers too who are responsible for the dismal MMOG offerings we see today and , unfortunately, will see for many tomorrows to come. If you want to get to the root of the problem [of shitty MMOGs] you really don't need to look any further than the people posting right here on these boards.

Anyway, we won't be seeing any great MMOG masterpieces for years and years to come.

    Maybe in 2015 or so...

I agree with you man. The only hope I got going for me right now is AoC.  I've pretty much givin up mmos all together. I still play shadowbane off and on because it's free.

I have played WoW, CoH/CoV, EVE, EQ2, RFO, D&L, and SWG. The only game that even came close to a good MMORPG was Pre-CU SWG (and it was bugged to shit).  The rest have been garbage. I hate where MMORPGs are going. Everything in development is FPS or dumbed down so even a Caveman can master it. Even the highly anticipated STARTREK  ONLINE is being turned into EVE on Crack! And why does everyone feel the need to clone WoW? I hate that game with all it's Cookie cutter toons and epic bullshit!
Come on....CAN NO ONE DO ANY BETTER THAN WHAT I SEE NOW AND ON THE HORIZON!!!!?
Because If you liked it , 10 million other people would claim to hate it :p .

      lol!

I don't see why people are stoked about it, maybe I haven't done enough research. But I think I read something about lots of PVP. Thats great :).

As for the OP, I think its because SWG had it all, you could manage your house.. tame different types of pets, come up with your own build, great market, flashy skill animations, a difference between different crafters, etc.

Now we want a game like that, and not another game where we are the same as everybody else. As much as people hate to admit it, WoW has influenced many companies that they don't need to add extra goodies to the game for it to be a success. I'm talking about player housing, and unique ideas that separate their game from others. Instead we are getting a lot of different plots with the same gameplay these days..

I am sure that there is one of those baking up at this time though. I certainly do wish there is, at least.

It's all a corporate business now, like the music and movie industry.  Making something new and innovative is risky, indies do that, usually with little support.  The mainstream producers AKA "The Big Boys" are only interested in profit margin, creativity and originality are sacrificed to fund the bottom line, make more of the same, use the same formats and styles that have been proven profitable (Think Back Street Boys and NSync), they may suck, but enough twits will continue to buy into it to make it profitable enough to be replicated for a time.  The indies will create the next big idea or thing, as always, but then will inevitably sell it out to a Corp., and that Corp and alot of others will follow with their clones.  Indies will always be the oasis of hope for those of us that are tired of the same old, but the new will be old again within a few years, and copied quickly, so we are in an eternal viscious cycle.  IMHO
