HI all,
I recently reactivated my account, and I'm trying to figure out why the graphics look so rough on the edges despite having the best graphics options selected. I have a great system, drivers are up to date, and when I was playing FFXI before, this wasn't an issue.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best maximize the graphics?

and your game should look good
I can't figure this out...
I've never used a text file modification on FFXI.
No matter what I change in the game, the graphics don't seem to change as a result, at least not enough.
Maybe I should reinstall?
Overlay resolution - this depends on how large or small you want the interface to be. Naturally the higher the resolution, the more crisp everything will look. I keep mine at a very high resolution (1280x1024 I believe, when I played on a normal monitor; I'm on a wide-screen now so the settings are different).
Background resolution, crank this as high as you can as it affects how sharp everything looks in the background.
Texture Compression: For the best image quality, keep all compression turned off. Compression is used if you're, say, on a system without alot of video memory. However, if you're at least at 128 megs of video ram (maybe less), there's no need to keep compression turned on; it comes with a loss in quality/clarity.
Bump-mapping: this is something that brings a little extra depth to the scene, making things appear a little more 3D. It's a very subtle effect but does add a little more to the game and doesn't come at any significant hit in performance... if at all.
Environmental Animation: smooth setting I agree with - this makes everything appear more natural.
On top of that.. If your video card supports anti-aliasing, you'll want to use that as that will smooth out the rough edges you're used to seeing in a 3D game. There is no setting in the game itself that will accomplish that.
Try out those settings and you should see a notable difference in quality. In the end, though, remember that FFXI is a 4-5 year old game with tech. that's even older, so it's not going to be able to keep up with the newer engines using all the latest bells and whistles. But it's still a damn good looking game thanks to SE's brililant designers and artists.
