I didn't know what to think getting into this beta. Really.. I've betaed before and there was good and bad in all.

But Lotro has the most polish of any game I watched launch next to WoW. More content than any other game other than WoW. Sure, it's all that boring level based system that everyone seems to cling to, but it really excells in the graphics and story.

This game is head and shoulders above  Vanguard, and they aren't even out of Beta. If I liked the LOTR movies, I'd probably be buying the lifetime membership... but alas, Elves don't do it for me unless they're called Eldar.

But from a game standard, it's nothing but content and polish. If you love the setting, play this game.

It sounds great, so great in fact, I pitty those who canceled :( - Some deluded SWG fanboi who pities me.
I don't like it when you say things. - A Vanguard fan who does too.

I have to agree. I admit I did not think LOTRO would be any good considering Turbine's past history with AC2 and DDO. Yet now after having a go at the game I have to say I was also impressed. I understand that some people like sand box like games so for those folks I say don't bother with LOTRO because it's not a sandbox game and was never intended to be one anyways.

For what this game is ( a game in same vain as EQ2 and WoW ) this is a very good game which hit's the marks it set out to hit. So gratz to Turbine because you'll have me for a bit until WAR comes out. Then I'll have a tough choice to make.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

I agree...given's Turbines recent track memory (and fact that I played DDO and didn't care for it) I was skeptical and really paid no attention to LotRO until I saw a deal to get a free Open beta key from a Magazine in early March.

Game turned out to be pretty fun....nothing groundbreaking, but should entertain me for a few months until AOC or WAR or something else new is released.....

    I agree.

I betaed D&D and thought this would be a complete mess because of it. Was pleasantly suprised.

I wouldn't be so hasty as to dismiss the sandbox elements.  Turbine is adding them. Of course the keystone of sandbox is a skill-based system which will never happen (nor will FFA PvP), but other elements like player housing and kinship halls are in the future.

Shayde, glad you enjoyed your experience.  Whether we as players will buy LOTRO or not, I think it is important to support a company that delivers a polished product.  That's just good for the health of our hobby.

    I agree.

I have debated with others if the MMO industry will actually learn that what made WoW so popular was the Polish and the Content.

$OE thought "levels and simple" and destroyed SWG.

D&D thought "strength of the IP" and failed to deliver.

    Vanguard is buggy and unfinished.

Sandbox elements aside, it's the quality of the game that makes it shine. I played WoW for quite a while and I never played any Blizzard game before. What hooked me was that it WORKED and there was CONTENT.

I'm sure I'd be gaga over Lotro if I liked the movies or the books, but the IP just doesn't thrill me... not my bag. But if I saw that this design team was working on a Shadowrun MMO or other IP that I dig, I'd be there with bells on. Literally if necessary.

I just hope other developers take note on the Goofus and Gallant relationship between Lotro and Vanguard.

Hope you are not on the EU server .Any man that rejoices over common folk losing their jobs because of a pixel character u lost and spends over 1 year in a vendatta over some game is certainly not the sort i want to see on LOTRo

Is it also good to support a company who sells an expansion pack to their customers and then shuts down the game a few months later?

Edit:  Oh, and Shayde, posting 2 more times in your own thread to agree with people agreeing with you really doesn't lend credence to your cause.  Its pretty obvious here that LOTRO is your "rebound" MMO.  You lavish it with adoration, hoping that SWG will see you with it, and make them jealous.  But, rebound relationships tend to sputter out quickly, when you realize there was nothing real there to begin with.  Have fun.

I was in beta, and imho, take away the LOTR setting and it's just another MMO.

To me, nothing really stood out.  Alas we must keep waiting for "The One."

That was uncalled for, the man has something positive to say about LOTRO and you reply with a personal attack? Shayde's feeling about SWG are his own, but its not like he came here to fling poo on LOTRO or anyone for that matter. Im most likely feeding a troll so I will just let it go.

ArmySurplus makes no apologies if someone other than him has already posted his reply in part or otherwise. He can’t be expected to read every single post on a thread and makes no promise to do so. If you posted a similar reply before him you undoubtedly stole his thoughts and used them without his written authorization. Please return to your post and edit it so that his post is the first to state whatever the hell he was thinking at the time. Thank you!
