BrognanBrognan Member Posts: 78
so here i am, i was curious how the community? friendly? helpful? whats the gameplay like?

i see that the game was free "unlimited" trail...are they cutting out stuff that you can get if you paid for a subscription?

what kinda weapons are there? are there guns? or is strictly a sword and sci-fi scorcery kinda thing

just wondering it seemed like a fun game to try out

The community is very friendly and helpful, and you'll find CSRs often hang out on the training island. It's a sandbox type game, with an open, freeform skill system, complex foraging and crafting. There are no quests to speak of, but the training island has an excellent series of training missions. There is a feature to allow players to create their own scenarios, which are instanced and cross-server.

The free trial has an unlimited time, but is limited to only level 21 in each of the four skill trees, and limited to the training island, Silan, which does not include the Range tree.

There are Range weapons, yes, once you get to the mainland. Swords, maces, daggers, axes, spears and shields. And magic.

Here's a player's site with pictures of the big guns:

Alot of people agree that Ryzom has one of the best (If not THE best) community of any MMORPG around.

    -Currently looking forward to FFXIV

-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda

now when you say NGE your talking about star wars right?...that made me stop playing the game, even the wife agreed that that was bull

now when i hear "THE most friendly MMO community" im there, thats the thing i hate about games like ragnarok online and scions of fate...the communities suck...but maybe thats the language barrier im contending with...i dunno but i dont want to play a game where you need to play with others and they arent friendly

I remember playing everquest online adventures and having to get groups which i always did and i enjoyed it throughly...i even met my wife playing it...anyhoo im a big socializer so il for sure be playing this game to see what people are like and i might end up continuing to play if its like what ive read

dunno what ill have for a character name but ill post here or elsewheres my character name and see if i can make some friends to keep me interrested...

Yes, NGE whinners refers to Starwars.  Its part of my sig, not the post I made.  I should probably find some way to block that off to make it more apparent though lol.

actualy their are quests not nearly as many as wow, but on the training island I counted 10 t0 15 per skill trainer, while I haven't yet left the island I would asume their would be more quests to do, in towns and stuff.

and there is a big learning curve, but figured most of it out within a day or two, and what I couldn't figure the other players where happy to reaveal for me.

    Moo

Yep, I said there were training missions on the island. There are also a few more quest type tasks there that continue leading you a little into the game lore. This understandably gives the impression that there will be more on the mainland. There aren't. There are countless tasks available from mission givers all around the world, but these are mundane, repeatable jobs that can earn you dappers or favour with one of the many factions. A few of these tasks turn out to be parts of the Encyclopedia Rites - there are only 12 of these at the moment, but they are the closest thing to "quests" on the mainland.

It's a sandbox game - you decide what you want to do yourself, and give yourself your own quests.

Good luck on Silan, Zyzx-Man, and look forward to exploring the enormous mainland :).

The quests in Silan (the training island) are similar to quests of other games as they give you xp and stuff as rewards, with the difference that they are not instanced. The Mainland is a bit different.

The main goal of Silan's quests is to teach you all the basic aspects of the game. In Mainland the quests don't give you xp as reward and are mainly related to the Fame System and Encyclopedia, that is a sort of compendium of the Lore that you discover doing the quests, called 'rites'. Encyclopedia rites gives perks as reward (ie: a buff in one of your attributes). Other quests gives you just money (small compared the other way to gain them ingame).

So basically, the game, as told in other topics, is a 'free' game where you 'live' in Atys. So, don't expect quest-driven path to help in your levelling. You decide what to do, how to do and where to do. Also, you are allowed to train every skill in game, so you can decide how you want to play every day.

To answer a bit more to Brognan:

What you can expect in Mainland:

A great community. Don't need to say more.

A planet filled with wonderful and often nasty creatures. And 'filled' is literal. I never seen in a mmo so many MOBs (in the original meaning: mobile entities) around. They sniff you with curiosity or they simply attack you. The ecosystem is absolutely unique. You'll find also NPC tribes that can help you or just NPC bandits that ambush you. The MOBs have a great AI.

Visible seasons, weather conditions and time that affect where and how the MOBs stay or patrol, so the regions are not always the same. This affect also the foraging of high-grade materials.

A HUGE mainland. 4 continents with 28 (iirc) regions total (Silan is big as one region). And a big undergound area, called Prime Roots.

Challenges, everyday. Also at highest level, you cannot feel totally safe. You always need to take care of what is around you when you go travelling the high regions. The sneak skill is something that you have to learn by yourself, there are no trainers for that.

Big PVP battles, if you like PVP, but you are not obliged to.

A 'foraging' skill that is not just 'dig and take it', but need attention, you can be killed by explosions or gas or  you can simply be attacked by an animal patrolling around if you don't look around while digging.

You can change your 'actions' to create personalized spells or melee attacks.

    What you cannot expect:

No instances. The game is one instance only (except the 'ring' scenarios)

No quests that drive you from level 1 to level 250

No 'uber' loot from animals. Animals drop only materials for crafting or selling purpose. The only exception is the drop from NPC bosses, that need a lot of people to kill. And they don't drop 'just' stuff. They mainly drop 'plans' to craft special armors. Some piece is dropped but you never find a full set dropped by one NPC boss. All the stuff you use in game is player crafted. NPC merchants sells them for you.

In one word: don't expect an easy game.

Finally, I suggest you to read the lore, that is one of the best i ever found. After the takeover we had a stop in content related to lore, but i'm sure GF will restart soon, to continue the saga.

of course, i don't want to suggest you that this is the perfect game. It's not. Many things can be improved, and the takeover slowed the development a bit (but this is most for the old players, not for the new one). Some bug is still around. But it worth at least one month sub, so you can see the mainland. I don't think you can enjoy (or hate) the game with only the free trial.

Hope you solve soon the client problem. See you in game :)
