Star War Galaxies was my first and favorite MMORPG. I know it had a lot of problems, but it was well worth all of the problems to be able to be part of the Star Wars world. It had HUGE maps and plenty to explore and see. Being a noob, I needed a lot of help and the community was GREAT. I got into a guild that actually supported each other. The helpful community is an experiance I have not recieved in any other game I have played. Although it had its probllems the game was innovative in the way it was set up and I had a fun time learning it. The faction points actually had some meaning to me in regards to the Darkside and Light side, the rebels and the imperials. Sone thought and consideratin actually went into how I wanted to be precieved in the Star Wars world. And not just trying to decide how which factions points could benifit me. I wanted my character to be aligned with a side for the sole purpose of my characters persona development.
This saga that had a history in my life and was something I wanted to be a part of for as long as I can remmeber. I was actually finally given a chance to do that with Star Wars Galaxies. Which I did. Which I enjoyed throughly for a couple of years. And every now and then I will get an urge to do it all over again. Whenever I think of the the things I learned about MMORPG's, the story of Star Wars the thrill of exploring Star War worlds, the time and energy of my first POWER GAMING episodes. This game was actually fullfilling a dream I had had my whole life. And some of my friends have actually named a period of my life as The Star Wars Years. Cheers to Star Wars Galaxies for giving me many goodtimes! I even hope for a day when the idea for a diffrent kind of Star Wars MMORPG comes around and is developed to live out some of the other storylines.I hope you enjoyed reading this.
Hey sorry about this guys. I didn't get started on MMO's until kinda late in the game; 2003 to be exact. I played DAOC some during it's "heyday", but for me, I cut my teeth Lineage 2 Chronicle 1-3. Chronicles 1 and 2 were actually times I still remember with great fondness. Believe it or not there was a fairly large and well-established set of role playing clans on just about every server. There seemed to be a clearer picture of good vs. evil in those days. Political intrigue actually was "political" in nature. No one had, at least on Gustin, had a complete set of B grade, but several almost did by Chronicle 2.
After Chronicle 3, things began to take shape as the are today. Good game, but has lost that charm for me. Open, yet out-of-control, meaningless PvP and basically very little if any creative story immersion. Economies that are so out of hand nothing can fix it. But, I'm not here to bash the good ol' days.
Just want to remember all those great days with all those wonderful cohorts I ran withSome of the best adventurers I hung with were women, , ahem, ( I know this because we used to use Teamspeak)

SWG was my first MMO and since I left due to the NGE, I have floated between several MMO's looking for the same feeling that I used to get while playing SWG. Unfortunately, NONE of them can even come close.
Pre-CU SWG was really ahead of its time and was a breath of fresh air compared to all the cookie-cutter High Fantsy class/level-based grindathons that are the staple of the MMO industry.
The huge worlds, the character interdependency (which helped to create the great community), the skill-based system where you could change your template whenever you wanted (mixing and matching between 30+ professions), the advanced harvesting/crafting system, the entertainers/dancers/musicians (this game was an RPer's paradise if that was your thing), and last but not least - the fact that you were living in the STAR WARS Galaxy. All these things came together to make this game the best MMO ever IMO. Even with the problems that existed in Pre-CU, this game was just sooo good.
I still miss the game and pop back for a month every now and then, its really sad to see the state that it is in now, SOE screwed this game up bigtime.
Ah well, at least we still have our memories.
MMORPG History: Playing - EVE Online. Played (Retired) - AO, SWG, MxO, WoW, RFO, SoR, CoX, EQ2, GW, L2, Vanguard, LotRO, AoC, TCoS, Aion. Favourite MMO - Pre-CU SWG, 3 Years, 4 Accounts, 2 Pre-CU Jedi (1 Pre-9). Awaiting - Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Secret World, Earthrise.
The first few months of release were amazing. A totally empty server where guilds could claim territory, build their cities and establish their borders. Resources in in the form of runes(which players could use for attributes), were hotly contested. Diplomacy and warfare were everywhere as nations engulfed in wars and alliances were formed for survival. Wars were fought between small neighboring guilds and broader, larger server wars were fought between huge powers. You could see 150vs150 battle it out for supremacy of the server. No safe zones, no meaningless battles, everything mattered. Players determined everything. Losing the war would mean losing your city and everything you have worked for to build it to the state it was in. The game was also innovative in not solely having the typical, cookie cutter races like (halflight, dwarf, human, elf, night elf) - which were all the same model.
Rather, they had Aracoix(bird race that could fly), Minatours and Centaurs to name a few.
Game had many issues and the FFA PvP mentality was extremely harsh to a lot of casual players, so it dropped off the radar a few months after release but those first few months were unlike any mmorpg I've ever experienced.
The old ultima online. The only real mmorpg to date.

Asheron's Call 1. Most original game that was years ahead of its time. It had the best character advancement system to date, a huge seamless overworld, almost limitless amount of content, and random loot drops. This is exactly the game the most people want to play today, but no company has yet to be able to get us back to where we were 8 years ago. Vanguard tried the seamless overworld and botched it. The only game that looks like the spiritual sequel is Darkfall. AC2 killed what could have been the best franchise of all time. If AC1 became free to play or updated graphics id be back in a heartbeat. This is the game that company's should be looking at, but sadly they won't because it never achieved the financial successes that games like WoW do. We can only hope that Darkfall sees the light of day, or that some company will look at AC1 instead of cookie cutter games when trying to come up with innovative games that provide depth and challenge.
Amen brother! Asheron's Call is hands down my all time favorite. Darktide is the true meaning of world PVP, I yearn for the days of having to sneak into town, sell my loot and get out before I get killed and looted myself.

And funny thing, no matter how much I played, I never got tired of it.. I remember grinding Master Doctor 6-7 times Sometimes when I had done another profession and I got tired of it, I always wanted to get back on doctor and relax while buffin' ppl hehe. So good old macro with a ton of stimpacks and you're on your way ^^ Oh remember i did master tailor aswell 4 times, then again, I had a total of 28 professions done when i unlocked my jedi hehe.. Used one Holocron total out of 3 available and yes, nr 28 was the hidden Oh I was soo happy, you wouldn't believe it!
Either DAoC or EQ1 for myself. I had a lot of fun playing those games. There was something there that no game has anymore. I don't know how to explain it, but the magic is not in the new stuff.

I really wish I coulda played swg pre cu. Its so hyped by the community here there is no way it could be bad. Anyways....I cant really say what MMO is my favorite I havent played many main stream ones for more than 2 weeks.
Most likely MU Online, Knight Online, or Voyage Century Online. MU Online was the first MMO that i have ever played, then i played
Knight Online (made by the same people), now i'm moving on to Voyage Century Online. Though ive prettey much allways been playing Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (a free, online, FPS).
