I just left Vanguard as that ship is sinking rapidly. So what makes this game any better then that one? It is after all the same type game of swords, creatures and spells. Is it a grind type game as are all the others of its kind?
What's the big difference in this game? What makes this game better then all the others out here now? I'd like to know as I'm searching for a game atm but hesitate to get this one as it looks like more of the same.
Now, I'm not bashing this game as I've never played it nor do I know anything about it. Just that it's more of the same type game as the rest of the market.
Comments
Its more of the same but very polished........... its basically WoW with better graphics. Its a good game but I cancelled my preorder because ive seen it all before.
Well, this is exactly what I'm talking about. All these games are the same. The same type missions, the same grind, the same everything. That's why I'm asking what's the big difference between this game and all the others?
Probably not much, right? Graphics? If that's all there is then it'd be better to save your money then. I'm just tired of jumping game to game and finding the same exact stuff in each one. The only difference is the games name and nothing else it seems.
btw I hate WoW.
who me ?
I am still on the fence for LOTRO, but I dunno. It is stable, it does have some variation in quest types early on and the lore pages are good for character specializing and varied advancement...but it jsut isn't clicking for me yet. I have grouped and my minstrel is now 15. Next I will be focusing on crafting and monster play, but so far it just seems like a lot of the same since the begining.
Don't get me wrong. In this day and age a functioning MMO is a rarity at release (how sad is that) but other than teh IP I don't see what it really offers. I get a lot of LOS for one thing which are getting rather annoying whena mob runs away and while I attempt to heal someoen a pencil thin tree stops my casting...yeah that irks me when it happens.
I'm not looking for the next big innovation. Just for something a bit different then the standard games like Vanguard, WoW and the bunch out now. It's boring and judging from what I continue to read on not only these forums but all gaming forums, people are bored with the current games and want something a bit different.
But just as I had expected, this game is just more of the same. That's why I haven't picked it up and it's not about the money either. It's just I'm tired of the same old stuff.
It's one reason I hope Tabula Rasa and Gods and Heroes exceed expectations.
As a long time Alpha/Beta tester, member of a dev guild and test team I have to warn you.
If you DONT like a really fun exciting, graphically superior game, with tons of quests, a great crafting system, awesome lore, enhanced raid content, personally customizable classes, and an innovative pvp system.. well then you wont like LOTRO.
LOTRO offers all of this and more and I strongly ugre you to avoid it if buggy unfinished unplayable games with no content are what you are looking for.
If you are NOT looking to actually spend your money on a solid playable game with unlimited potential this is not the game for you.
XP is gained by completing story driven quest solo or fellowship (group)
No system/game mechanic innovation, just solid and stable
This game is not better than others, just different.

It sounds like you are looking for someone to convince you that LoTR is something it is not.
I think it a great game and have loved every minute I have spent in it but it does not sound like it is the game you are looking for. It takes what other MMOs before it have done, adds even more layers of polish (and for me fun), wraps it in a ton of LoTR lore, and puts in a long term meaningful plotline you can play through.
But the basic mechanicas are similar to WoW, AC2, EQ, DoAC, etc… and if you hate those then I’d say this is not the game for you.
Graphics are good. The quests are the same run of the mill quests WoW and VG and every other MMO of this type. The crafting system is nothing special. The raid content is nothing new. The class customization is horrible compared to some other games like pre-CU SWG, Anarchy Online, hell even the horrible failure Asherons Call 2. The PvP system is designed for monsters to lose if they dont outnumber the free people. Yeah thats innovative but I dont like being on uneven ground. Its fun if you are new to MMOs but personally I dont find it fun to play the same game ive been playing for years with new graphics every few months. Its super polished, it would be fun if I havent been playing MMOs for years, and it has good graphics. I will personally just save my money and stick with Guild Wars and wait for Age of Conan but to those who are enjoying LoTRO more power to you.
I really like LotRO. It's hard to quantify exactly what it is about it, but I really like what I've seen so far.
If you are going to do the Open Beta, you really need to go all the way to level 15 to begin to scratch the surface on this game. Many of the negative comments are things I had in the back of my mind after the first few hours, which ended up being tossed aside as I got further into the game.
Everyone has their own taste and their own playstyles, not everyone is going to love this or any other game. I can say, however, I have been very impressed with this game and if any title deserves a full trial from the MMORPG masses looking for a new game, this is the one.

I didn't know it was free.
I'll check out the website for this game to download it unless there's another place for downloading this game, is there?
Thanks
I can't find this games website. Where would I go for the games client for download or do you have to buy it in order to play the beta?
Bah! it's ok nevermind, I'm tired of these type games anyway. Think I'l take a break from them for a while.
Thanks anyway
There is one thing different about LOTRO than any MMO i have played eq2 / swg / wow / vangaurd.
This game has a storyline that is a huge part of what everyone is doing, from level 1 to 50. Its not just about levels and items, its different. In fact i find myself leveling and not even realizing or caring i did.
Coming from item/level based games like eq2 / wow / vanguard that is a nice change.

If you're looking for nice ME scenery, pretty casual and standard gameplay and socializing and RP'ing, give it a shot. Simple as that. Depends on tastes.
For that matter as far as innovative when was the last time a game came out in a fairly polished and fun to play right from the box state. Now that is some innovation. According to the VG fan boys even WoW was a bug fest at release, although I thought it was pretty smooth myself.
I miss DAoC

I'll tell you this much - If I ever hear a VG player ever talk about any other game ever speak ill of any game other than VG for being buggy... I will personally punch them in the nuts and promptly set them on while simultaneously drowning them by holding only their head under the water while the rest of them .....
Ok, I am just kidding but really VG is the buggiest game to have ever been released... At least as buggy as the old sierra games.

I don't count MP as overly innovative, just a load of fun. What I meant is that LOTR is running a sturdy, well known combat, class and quest system which is a big minus for some people. The plus is that it's very stable and polished - exactly what you're saying.
As I stated before, I don't look for innovation in every game I play and it's not a mandatory requirement for me All it takes is a game to be as fun as LOTRO has proven to be. I don't need to convince myself it's innovative nor apologize to anyone when accused of playing the "dumb WoW clone" rehash - it's rather silly. The only argument I have is that LOTRO is thoroughly enjoyable experience, and that is much more than most games nowdays can boast of. Peace, and see you in ME!

It's time to move on
Hence, after trying this game's beta for a couple of weeks, I did not go back to it. But I may. Because it looks good, it feels good and it runs good.
If you play games primarily for story, the game-world and atmosphere, I say make sure you check it out (I'm not adding community here, because there's no way of knowing how that'll work out after release).
If you like problem-free, smooth gaming, check it out. I had so few problems that I often forgot I was playing a beta - it was the most polished beta I have ever been in. Also, the game looks really beautiful, even without the hi-res package.
However, if you are looking for "the next step in MMOs", I highly doubt this will do it for you.
