Got a couple questions (considering starting)

Hey all, I am considering giving DAoC a shot. I havent played it for a longggg time. Actually first 3 weeks when it launched and thats it hah. Anyway, I have played alot of mmorpgs, and  DAoC has caught my eye because of the RvR. I like alot of others am waiting for WaR to come out, and DAoC looks like perfect game until then.

However, I am curious... I have done PvE thing for like 7 years now, and would really like to mainly focus on PvP. I'm for sure going with classic server. I've read you can level from just doing PVP. How does that work? I would of course want to do PVE until I actually knew how to play lol, but once I got to that point where I was comfortable enough to try PVP could I just really do that exclusively?

I'm also curious if I tried pvp at say level 20, wont I just get crushed by level 50s? Finally, is there loot in PvP? Or some way of gaining gear via PVP or will I have to gear up PVE. Im not 100 percent against PVE I just don't want to spend a long time leveling/gearing up to get into the fun stuff I really havent done in my mmorpg past aside from WoW. Finally how many expansions would I have to buy to get caught up?

Anyway any help or tips would be appreciated,

Thanks a bunch!

I also haven´t log in for a longer time, but:

Most expansions are free to download now.
For Levels lower than Lvl 50 there are battlegrounds. The BG named "Thidranki" has a levelrange 20-24 and was well populated.
Via PvP you gain a bit money i think, but MUCH more important, you get a "Realmpoints" and a higher "Realmrank". You can gain very useful "Realm-abilities", such as self-instant-heal for the realmpoints. Every full realmrank raises all your skills a bit.
You can gear up by buying it in the housing-zone.

The battleground 20-24 is the first, that is quite populated. So you have to do some PvE ´til lvl 20. (after you tested the BG with lvl 20 you pretty want to lvl till lvl 24 ;) ). When you kill someone in PvP you also get some Lvl-experience. So there will be the point, when you get lvl 25. Once being killed, when you are lvl 25, you will be kicked out of this battleground. (there is a command /exp off or something, if you do not want experience in PvP, you can turn it on again, if you like)

You left DAoC after 3 weeks, when it was released? Hell, you missed the best time of your virtual life. ;)

There is pvp from level 5 to 50 now.  You gain excellent xp and decent coin from killing enemy combatants, but nothing else drops.  The battlegrounds are set up in spans of 5-10, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39.  Then 40-50 go to RvR in the Frontiers.  You don't have to worry about getting crushed by a 50 at 20 as long as you don't go into the Frontiers.  Sadly, you will need to do some pve to gain cash, seals, or aurilite for your gear.  If you get in a good guild, you might gain enough cash from BGs to pay them cost for making the gear for you instead.

Last part is about expansions.  If you are going to BG your way up in levels, you really only need Classic since SI, Frontiers, and Catacombs are free now.  Being on a Classic server means you don't need ToA, and DR and LotM are only required if you want to play the minotaur race or a Mauler, or you want to work on Champion levels.  I recommend you do the 14-day free trial and check it out.

Hey thanks for the information :) Im downloading it now so going to give it a shot. And yeah, wish I would have stuck around bit longer heh. Stupid EQ ;p

When you hit level 40 you do not go straight into the frontiers actually, there is a level 40-44 bg and 45-49 bg.

As for leveling up purely from PvP well that might take considerbly longer since some battlegrounds are not nearly as populated as others.

Some Battlegrounds you definitily want to try out though are:

    Lion's Den - Level 5-9

    Thidranki - Level 20-24

    Molvik - Level 35-39

    Cathal Valley - Level 45-49

Usually there are a few people in all the battlegrounds during primetime, but the ones I listed have the most action and are definitly worth playing in.

Hope you have fun trying out DAoC.

Just quick update thought I would post. I tried DAoC and im really impressed with the game. I've made few characters, so far like my wizard (might go necro not sure... not too clear on how well they do in RvP).. I went to lions den at level 6 and im so bad at pvp on this game its almost embrassing haha. Guess ill figure it out, but had a good time tonight, didnt actually want to stop playing.

Once again thanks for the help guys/gals. I would also suggest to any prospective players who considering it, give it a shot, fun to be had on this game for certain.

It is true that you can download the expansions for free, but isnt it true that you have to have an actual unused CD-Key to activate your client to beable to do anything within the expansion areas,?meaning you would still have to buy the expansions, right? I quit shortly after Catacombs came out so I was unsure if it was changed or not.

You can download them for free.  You do not need a CD key.  The last two exansions, however, you do need to activiate by paying for them.  You can get everything but DR and LotM though without paying.

If you do decide to get the two newest expansions, they are currently $10 off if you activate them both at the same time.  Rather than $40, it will only cost you $30.
