Is the an MMO with more than just a battle system?

I'm looking for an MMO that has more to offer than a battle system. You see too many MMOs that have only combat, and quests based solely on killing or collecting stuff. Other than RS, are there any good skill-based, or interesting MMOs out there? Preferebly a free one, but that probably won't happen...

Voyage Century is the only free one as far as I know that is free with a good focus on crafting. I hate recommending it because of the company behind it.
As for p2p ones, from the top of my head, you could try EVE online, Saga of Ryzom, or Ultima online.
