Anybody playing on a macbook pro?

Before people start insulting (as if what kind of computer a person uses is grounds for an insult) let me tell you I have played everquest 2 on very high settings, vanguard on balanced with no problems at all, and then WoW and FFXI maxed out (not a big deal I know)

My machine is lovely for running games....until LOTRO. When i play LOTRO my mac tends to get very hot....sometimes hot to the touch. I am scared that I will melt my graphics card or other components. Like I said I have played some very demanding games on high specs and I never got too hot.

Does anybody else play on a macbook pro and have this problem?

If not can you at least tell me if I am going to blow up my computer or not?

You are playing a windows game on a hacked copy of windows for mac or some OS emulator app. You should be glad it even loads up. You want a real gaming machine well then get a PC.

Wrong. I am playing on bootcamp just like thousands of other people are doing. Macs run with intel core 2 duos now. This enables them to run two OS's. Apple created a program called bootcamp for just that reason. And I BOUGHT my version of windows. This set up is quite legit I assure you.

I am playing on Macbook Pro with 2gig RAM, I run LOTR at the highest setting without any noticeable lag, it plays as a charm

I play LOTRO on my Mac Book Pro with boot camp (WinXP).  1gb RAM, 256 Video.



Runs good.  Though the machine does get a bit warm and the fans kick in, but it runs good nonetheless.  I may upgrade the RAM to 2gb at some point.   I find if I turn down the screen brightness, this quiets down the machine a little.

I had considered it but I think I'll spend the extra cash and get an Alienware notebook instead.

It's not necessarily bad for the machine.  On a mechanical level, it is making the fans turn on and do their thing along with making the components do their thing as well.  But thats exactly what these computers are meant to do .  That being said, it does add wear and tear.  For me, I am not taking any efforts in "avoiding" this though.  I STRONGLY STRONLGY suggest you pick up Applecare if you do not already have it.  I used to work in computer hardware repair and we serviced Apple products on a big scale.  And I can say Applecare is well worth the money. 

So get Applecare, play LOTRO, and enjoy your awesome Macbook Pro!

Also, is anybody else having trouble getting the ingame voice to work on their mac with the built in mic?

Running on my iMac Intel under bootcamp and it runs like a charm.



As far as the mic question, do you have the very latest beta build of  bootcamp?  The last release had some soundcard drivers that cleared up a similar issue that I was having.

I don't know if anybody mentioned this yet, but you can always get a notebook cooling pad, it has 1 or 2 fans, & u place it under ur laptop,  i have yet to try this, but i have heard good things about it, heres a link http://www.nextag.com/cooling-fans-for-laptop-computer/search-html

i couldnt find one on apples website, though nextag has one nice looking cooling pad that would go well with macbooks i think

You should look for a utility that can monitor the core temps, and probably check your video card's applications and see if it has a temperature display. Usually there are several temperature sensors inside the case.

Honestly I'm not sure why it'd heat up more for LOTRO than other 3D games. LOTRO is a bit demanding on the memory front at high settings, with a gigabyte of ram a lot of disk swapping goes on but I don't think that would substantially effect the temperatures.

Double check to make sure that other games still run cool over the same amounts of time so you can rule out a fan being physically burned out.

I play LOTRO on my Dell XPS M1710 and it will burn my legs if I have it on my lags playing. It's the only game that makes it run that hot. WoW, AO, EQ, Vanguard...none of them made it get that hot. I play on my 20" iMac with bootcamp and it runs great. I haven't tried the ingame voice chat yet.
