I'm looking for the exact thing: an EVE Online rip off. Or just something similar, complex and good looking. I had 3 trial accounts now, but i can't switch to a payed account since i can't really afford the montly fee. I'm just a student strugleling for living .
I already tried some titles like Homeworld2, X2: The Threat, Space Cowboys, DarkSpace, Darkstar One, a demo of Tarr Chronicles [if I remember well], Freelancer, Freespace 2, Chronicles of Tarra, SpaceForce: Rogue Universe, but no one is what I'm looking for.
The trick is that it doesn't have to be a MMO, but I'd like a 3'rd person [rear view of the ship, not cockpit] with some good graphics [for my 6600GT/1Gb ram] and even a click-and-fight just like in EVE. And of course it has to have a skill/training system.
I'm searching for 3 full weeks now and i couldn't find anything interesting. Did i missed something? Or maybe you know other games i didn't yet run into. It seems to me there are not many really good space-based games.
Why do people keep comparing space cowboy with eve anyways They're 2 completely different concepts. It would be like comparing Oblivion with Settlers because they're both medieval or something. It's action vs strategy.
That's because you won't find any EVE "rip-off". Just similar games in one way or another. And since there isn't another RPG as complex as EVE, you have to make some compromises. "Maybe i'd like something different like Space Cowboys... Oh, maybe not..".
So i'm prepared to try them all. The sad part is that neither of them are a good alternative to EVE. At least not what i tried so far.

As far as free games go I think spacecowboy tops them all. Excellent gameplay with a dated engine and lackluster graphics.
If you are a true gamer and prefer gameplay over flair and polish Spacecowboy has a lot to offer.
