With the EQ Anniversary pack that contains all 13 expansions set to be released on the 23rd of this month, who plans on making a comeback?
The last expansion I played was PoP, well over two years ago. I've been thinking about getting into EQ2 with the EoF expansion for $30 but may want to return to the original just for the nostalgia rush.
LOTRO and Vanguard weren't my cup of tea.
So who else plans on returning? My main problem is probably the fact that the lowbie zones will be completely empty as I plan to start from fresh.

Things that might provoke me into playing again:
1) New server of some kind. I like being part of a new community. Joining an old one makes me feel like an outsider.
2) New character models. Long overdue.
3) Gameplay changes. MMOs have evolved, EQ has been slow to adapt (it never used to be the case), and having things like rest experience isn't necessarily a bad thing. I have the exp boost veteran award but that doesn't help newer players.
4) New class. It might upset the balance of things but part of the fun of EQ was learning the tricks of the game. After playing for so long no class feels new to me now. Except for the Berserker which doesn't appeal to me.
Realistically, it would have to be a combination of at least 2 of those things for me to be serious about returning.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
agree with above, and new UI.
Also, why don't EQ actually try different ruleset servers, in fact, why do all mmorpgs settle with the status quo and don't try anything different.
I was thinking about returning to EQ. The only expansion I don't have is The Buried Sea, but part of me was sort of thinking about buying the new pack and starting a brand new account (probably still on Xegony, though) and bootstrapping my way up. I can't decide if that would be fun or just frustrating.
It probably wouldn't be as frustrating as being a level 73 SK with <100 AAs though.
...
This is where I draw the line: __________________.
i stopped playing eq right as OoW was released, and i cannot for the love of god find a game that fits my playstyle the way eq did, i would also start from scratch and am also worried about low lvl population...
there would have to be... a new server which others could not transfer to, new character models, and i would have to see sony put some sort of effort into pulling in new people...
Exactly.
I would also suggest a fixed-release for each expansion and try to keep it Pre-PoP as long as possible. However, that is my personal opinion on the matter.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
So it would need endgame instancing for guilds.
Next comes the question of is it just "pure" classic or.....what about kunark and velious? I think you include kunark but velious added to many items that trivialized old content so its out.
Soo Kunark + classic + instances so your team doesnt get c0ck-blocked by some guild named "Realm of Incestial Manluv" when they poach nagy and trak every time they spawn.
Great point.
I completely agree. I would definitely return if they had this; I have not done the old-dragons in ... years and would love to.
I am glad you brought that up.
I agree in terms of Classic + Kunark for at least 3 months. However, I really enjoy Velious and Luclin as well; I would like to see a server that is PRE-PoP for as long as possible.
I re-opened my Account and played for a bit and its still fun, hard to group though.
When the Anniversary set comes out Im buying it. its $20 bucks Cant say that about past expansions. remember buying them 20 - 30 bucks a pop? this will give me 5 extra expansions to my account.
To anyone thinking of returning, check out my post here: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/126056
I have been playing EQ for, more or less, 8 years. The game is in its last breath, unless they supply a server that people will want to play on. The progression servers were a failure because they reached PoP too fast.
We are asking SOE for a server that is Pre-PoP (or Pre-Luclin) but they will not deliver. The progression servers, ironically, were the most successful Pre-PoP. Once Gates of Discord opened, they had to merge one of the progression servers with the other, because people do not like this zerg-raiding stuff. I think many of us want the magical world feel (Pre-PoP or Pre-Luclin).
I am not buying Anniversary edition, although on one of my accounts I only have the expansions to GoD. I might buy the anniversary packs for my accounts if there is a new server. If not, there is no point for me to buy it.
I think that is precisely why we need a new progression server that remain Pre-PoP as long as possible; it should be marketed as the closest server possible to a classic server. Keep it Pre-PoP or Pre-Luclin for a year (perhaps a year at least). In fact, the promise should be Pre-PoP for a year with the possibility of releasing new expansions if/when the population dies down.
I would also like to see the intelligent and scarce use of instances, but this will not happen.
I believe, quite firmly, there is a vast market for this.
