I am one who to-date and through many, many MMOs, truly believe that pre-CU SWG was the most fun game I have played to date. What really made it for me was the community. There wasn't a really over powered class. Although there were a few underpowered classes, they were needed. But it was something about needing others in a way I haven't seen or done in other MMOs.
For example, I loved to have to go to the cantina to heal. It was there I made many friends. Some I still talked to years after quitting that game. It just had a sense of community.
I know in other games you can build homes, communities, and have a need for other professions, but it just came together in SWG.
My most favorite memory was going Kimo hunting with my guild. I could spend hours doing it. Yet, it's weird because I truly hate the grind in most MMOs, and I know you can spend hours in EQII or WoW trying to get that perfect drop.
Oh well... maybe it was just the magic of the Star Wars universe?!?
What many players are looking for, and what SWG pre-NGE had, is more of a virtual world, and less loot and level gameplay. The more control you give players over the world, the more they invest in it and feel part of it, including things like being able to craft unique items, player based economy, the ability to take over and hold territory, build cities, etc.
EVE has some of this, but you have to play as a spaceship which is not to everyone's liking, plus it has a bit of a steep learning curve.
I think we will see a move in this direction at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later. Developers realize that not everyone wants to play WoW. Eventually, when everyone is competing for the WoW players, some development teams will realize they can have a solid market by catering to those players left over from the WoW type games that want more of a virtual world.
I'm looking forward to see what Red 5 has in mind, although it's going to be awhile before we see anything come out of that studio:
I agree with you, Realm-Reaper. I miss the days of SWG pre-CU, and even moreso the days that were pre-Jedi. I often reminisce about those days, and I can't even watch the movies anymore without thinking about them. I won't go into the post-CU days, as I don't want to taint your thread.
I would, given the opportunity, pay for a Pre-CU server subscription. Let us hope that SOE will someday hear our 2-year old cries for such a thing, and either give us our wishes, or get on to SWG2 and make it like the initial retail SWG we all loved so much.
Yes...
But what is the element that SWG had that no MMORPG has cloned to date? What is that one thing that keeps us wanting it back. What is it????...I just can't put my finger on it.
I would say for one the community was just awsome, the fact it was Star Wars helped and the fact that it wasnt level based was a huge plus for me. I loved the way we could switch around our templates, didnt like carbineer well then just pick up a pistol and off you go, oh wait maybe I will just master marksman and get that extra +25.
I remember when the game first started, a buddy and I didnt get very far our first couple of days but we had a blast sitting in camps to heal or craft. The game was unique in so many ways
I never had more then 1 character (except when I bought a second account just to craft and such) because you didnt need more then one. I played so many different types of templates, some were great, others totally sucked but it was the fact we had the freedom to do so at anytime.
I miss the big ass wars that would break out in Anchorhead or Bestine, we all knew pvp was unbalanced but most of us didnt care we just had a blast. When the Imperials would raid Anchorhead with their damn AT-ST and all we had were ourselves it was just exillerating.
HAHA.. Just thought of something from way back when, I remember I was so freakin excited when I was able to wear Bone Armor.. LMAO!! Of course back in those times not many saw Composite unless you knew someone or were rich, poor me I was just a poor ass Rebel fighting for a cause
No one was perfect, everyone needed something from someone. To heal wounds we needed a doctor or sat in a hospital until they healed (much slower), we needed a cantina with dancers and musicians to soothe our minds and get us prepared again for battle. I could go on and on but I am sure a lot of you know where I am coming from.
So many good times, I know I will never experiance that again but I cherish every bit of time I did have before it was flushed down the toilet. I still go back and look at all the screenshots I took back then and I am so glad I did.
Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there, 80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters. Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior, and he will bring the others home. -Heraclitus 500BC
You're asking a good question. I don't know what it was that made the old SWG so good. I'd like to point out, though, that it was my first mmorpg so that might be why I get so nostalgic for it.
To date, there hasn't been a game that even comes close to capturing my attention the way that SWG did. I made the mistake of going back for one of the free trials last year and it was devastating...the Intrepid server was almost completely empty, my old PA had disbanded and our once beautiful city was a ghost town. I spent a couple hours riding around and logged out for good.

I agree. For me the next MMOG that will be skill based, a virtual world, and that really interests me is World of Darkness Online, the MMOG that's just started being made. I'm a massive fan of World of Darkness and cant wait.
I hear that it will be geared to more of an adult audience. It is my hope that it will employ the same sandbaox principals as SWG per-CU. I also hope the skill system will be similar to the "SKILL BOX" set the orginal game had....NO true professions (only skills). I also hope that game will be set in a modern time...today...or the future.
SWG (Pre-CU) was my first MMORPG, and I like Star Wars (the first reason that lead me to the game). After playing it, I realize it is much more fun than I thought because I get to be ME inside the Star Wars universe.
Anyways, the reason (imo) that people want SWG Pre-CU is because the Skill-based System, the Sandbox world, the good social aspect in the game, and that you play the way YOU want, not the way the game companys make you play. (I don't like Class system because I can never find the "right" class to play... I have too wide an interest to be limited by class so...)
That's just my thought, and I truly wish that there will be a game that will take the good part of the system that SWG Pre-CU had and make a new game out of it (don't have to be Star Wars, can be anything...)
I believe that there is a group of people making a pre-cu server and they are pretty far into it. If you search google for swg and emu you might get your answer.

Please don't mention that here...they will shut down my thread. I know you did not mean it...but don't
