Like anything else, voice chat has a time and a place. Most groups I've been in so far in my short time in DDO at least ask that you turn on voice chat so you can hear them. And that was the same in my WoW raiding group, they didn't care if you spoke but they did ask that you listened. I haven't been in a group yet that just chatted or trash talked for the helluvit, that gets annoying (Xbox Live anyone?) but I've always had at least one person in the group who was very familiar with the encounters and offering tips and such. And it's easier to actually say "thanks" for a heal or whatever on the go than to stop everything and type it. But that doesn't mean I have to participate myself; sometimes I do, sometimes I just listen and type. If I ever get annoyed at someone's meaningless chatter or trash talking, I can just turn it off. So far DDOs community seems more mature, but it's an online game and there *is* PvP so I'm assuming the immature l33t "i pwn j00" kiddie crowd is out there somewhere, thankfully I haven't encountered them yet.
