Cool down there are only 5 genres of mmorpgs out there. Past, past/fantasy, present, present/fantasy, and future. Plus there are only like, what, 3 future mmos out there, and 2 of the 3 don't do well at all so why not make past/fantasy? If you don't like the game, dont play it.

First off, there is no need to cuss on the board. I'm not sure if you've mastered the art of not talking like a gangster, but please do. Second, its called a Shift key, and its quite prefered over every-thing-in-under-caps. You used bad grammer, you were rude, you insulted other people, and countless other things. If you have a complaint about Fantasy games (which arn't THAT many), please just post a civilized REASON for your hatred, other than "im so funkcing sik of fantasy games!!1 there are 10481643932 of dem!". Just because a game is fantasy, dosn't mean its bad. And just because you hate them, dosn't mean you have the right to be a snot-nosed-brat. And apparently, you havn't tried games like "World War II Online", "Anarchy: Online", "City of Heros", "The Sims Online", "Planetside", "There", "Second Life", "Savage Eden", etc. None of those are in a Fantasy setting, but apparently you were in such a rush to piss every one off, you just skipped them.

Anarchy Online 2 1/2 years (sci fi but in all reality it is a fantasy game set in the future)

CoH only got to play a day, i totally loved it tho

The Sims and Second Life I dont understand how those games even fit in the MMORPG genre (they are life simulators, not even a game imo)

im waiting to MxO to come out as it looks if it might break the grind/autoattack BS

BTW this forum board is FULL of swearing, with no repremands, so swear doesnt seem bother anyone, plus swears really add a sense of anger, that a post w/o them cant actually convey, check the link to the D13 review of L2, to illustrate my point

One thing you have to look forward to when you grow up and become an adult is that you learn that you have choices in life, and that you get to exercise choice.

Ok you hate all games with imagination. :::^b:: Don't play mmorpgs, in fact, don't play video games ever again. If you don't enjoy the mmorpg genre, then make your own mmo. I would not buy a Kansas City mmorpg but go ahead and make it. With your last post you just cancelled out your first post so don't expect many people to argue.

I can kinda see where the original poster is coming from.. albeit I would have worded it differently, however his main point does have bearing.

Im not a big proponent of the fantasy genre myself.  I have played Jumpgate for over two years and Planetside for over a year.  Im currently playing WW2online.

I have noticed that a majority of mmo's that are either just released or in the pipeline to be released are fantasy in content.  Even Star Wars Galaxies is a fantasy game, although set in the future.  I think marketing has a lot to do with developers going toward the fantasy game architecture.  Game companies are funded and with the success of the Lord of the Rings movies, investors see a higher chance on their returns by pushing developers to the fantasy type games.

There is a problem however in that the market will be flooded very shortly with fantasy games and then it will be a question of what makes one fantasy game stand out over another game that is in the same genre.  I honestly do not think, I could be wrong, that there are enough players to support the amount of fantasy games that are going to be released.  If that is the case, we will see a lot of these titles die a slow death, similar to Earth and Beyond.  One can hope that if this happens the best fantasy games will remain and not the games that have worse gameplay but had more financial backing to stay open.

It would be nice to actually see more futuristic games, like Jumpgate come along.  However, the only people left playing an outdated game like that are the niche players, because without newer games to compete, that is the only option they have available.

Hmm, that looks cool.  . . I'd love to step into a good western sim. To the original poster - dead horses should be mutual. Many, quite possibly the majority, enjoy the fantasy format.

all i can say is whether or not u like fantasy based MMORPG's, theres millions of ppl out there who do... like it or not, its what sells... as stated above, theres only 3 real sci-fi games out there and only 1 of them is really fully populated... as for fantasy based MMORPG o_0... thats a whole other story

I actually agree with you on this point, protoroc- games like the Sims Online have no place whatsoever on an MMORPG list.

Geezus chris and a half, kid.  A lot of us are sick of fantasy games, but put some freakin' ice down your trousers and take a look around.  CoH, TSO, etc etc.  Y'know E-Games has some weird giant mecha game even?  Crazy stuff, crazy stuff.  Anyway, yeah.  Nice to have a mission and all, but c'mon, be reasonable.

I would just like to point out that every game by definition is fantasy. Fantasy by definition is a a vision of fancy. All games are visions of some sort by the developers. Even if they try and simulate real life they are not reality and therefor must be fantasy in nature.

If you wan't a reality game try playing life. It costs nothing, is always up, and has unlimited content. And you can be anything you want. Even as we speak your playing it.

As to fantasy as a genre, yes there are alot of fantasy games out there and yes there are more coming out, do you know why? Its because the majority of the population of gamers out there revel in the fantasy that is being a hero.

You mentioned pen and paper rpgs, they too are worlds created much the same as mmorpgs. Based on the same sets of rules and using the same cookie cutter classes as defined by those rules. If you don't want to abide by the rules set forth by these worlds then I suggest you create your own. Don't make other people do it for you, create your own world and make it the way you wan't it to be. This is the only way you are going to get your ideal game.

OMFG sorry life may have unlimited content but its all for the most hardcore players, most casual players wont have access to most of the content that it delivers...i will admit the servers are the best i have ever seen. It costs alot, a week of playing cost me over $200...and grind is just ridiculous, and u dont even gain levels

This whole topic seems kinda dumb. You cuss at every game whether it is EQ or AO...so basically not happy with the game genre whether or not it is Fantacy or Sci-fi. The sci-fi games are too fantacy-like for your liking either. So if you are so upset then why not just not spend any of your hard earned money on any of the games? Steer clear of the whole MMORPG sceen and problem solved.

Personally I enjoy both fantacy & sci-fi my personal beef is just the fact  they are all EQ clones...hunt mobs, heal, hunt mobs, heal, heal then go after another mob. Lack of variaty in the games is what is really gettin boring.

any game can technically be classified "fantasy" . i honestly would rather play a fantasy mmo compared to sci fi even

If you hate them so God Damn much don't play them. That simple, and why don't you use at least a portion of your brain instead of just coming up with topics to piss people off? Now go play with your pencil and paper if you want.

I like mmorpg based on fantasy setting.  I have played sci-fi mmorpgs but didn't like them as much.  Fantasy games will always appeal to me, they have been my favorite since I was young, and I have been playing fantasy games through the years, either pen & paper RPGs or mmorpgs, they are always interesting and fun.  I am not closed minded to other settings, I often try them, but I wind up coming back to the fantasy games in the end.  The Lord of the Rings lasted for a long time with people always reading it and now watching it, why can't fantasy games last?

While the language and tone of the post wasnt the best i can see the point.

I take it you would like a game set in the real world, maybe where you can be a cop, or in the army, or a street gang etc. With real-world locations and weapons and events etc.

I would like to see a game such as this implemented, and although i love being an armor clad paladin going round purging the world of evil i can see scope for games with real-world professions etc.

For example games workshop have (or had) a tabletop game called necromunda, where you had comtrol over a gang. this was set in a kind of apocalyptic future, but would be a great MMORPG for the Pc, and could even be set in todays world, with drug-lords, police and other gangs etc etc.

there are obviously more situations these days which could be incorporated into an MMORPG and i think it would be nice to see one.

who really wants to play a mmo about real life its just as bad as watching reality tv.....

  • bsherlockbsherlock Member Posts: 491

Not real life where you sit in a room and maybe get a job, cos that is boring.

But it could be set in iraq battling the americans for example where you pick a side and a class etc etc. All he means is transfer the game into a more real setting with people as characters instead of elves etc.

There are some pretty cool things you can do while still sticking to this period in time.

Thanks for a laugh.  I agree, there are many...many fantasy mmorpg available and on the way.  I disagree that they are all the same.  Each game is different in some way.  Whether it be graphics, PvP style, Quest base...etc.  Being so closed-minded and stereotypical may just cause you to miss out on the best game you have ever played.
