I think we're all missing the point here.. Why do you mind if it's been developing for 6 years? I think we got used to the 2 year development crap, and the pre pay get into beta to later scam your money type of game.. Give these guys a break, just wait to see it, then bash it if it deserves it.. IMHO.. as I stated before, if it has been developing for 6 years, its not just vaporwere..
Perhaps, then, I can interest you in a preorder of the game Mourning/Thrones of Chaos?
And, I haven't seen anyone bashing the game. Some people, though, have been bit in the ass by the hype machine, and empty promises before. Just ask all those D&L fanboys that said D&L would revolutionize the genre based of some screenshots, and prerendered videos. Hell, some of them may well be in this very thread, having not learned the first time. Or the VG fanboys. Shadowbane, SWG, need I go on?
Yeah, yeah, it's the holy grail of pvp, and sandbox gameplay, and you can have cities and a pirate ship, and a giant flying office building full of accountants. And everyone has a case of priapism because you can go out and loot dry any poor dumb newb you find, because even though gear won't be important, it is important to be able to take it from people. The only thing missing is a fully animated *azzrape* emote.
It's all good, though. You all can crank your expectations up to 250%, and when the game doesn't live up to the impossibly high bar you've set, you can go rushing to the forums in a fit of righteous indignation, to bitch about how the devs lied to you, and you were ripped off, and everyone else will go, "Woah, deja vu", and enjoy a good snicker at your pain.
I was just trying to point out that perhaps it is vaporware, but it might not be.. not if they've been developing it for 6 years, but heck what do I know?
Again, having followed this game for a long time, the beta will be the complete game in all of its glory with all features being present. This is one of the main reasons it has been taking so long. Unlike Vanguard, there will be no missing classes, missing continents, or missing features.
You're just making that up.
I am not making that up. Here is a quote from the most recent Dev Journal from last week.
"The first beta build will be very close to the full game: all races, the whole world, full gameplay, around 300 quests, countless adventure areas, hundreds of monsters, all the mounts, ships, cities, sieging, with as few limitations as possible."
Game looks great but how will they support 10,000 players pvping in a twitch-based fps style game without instances? Just dont see how it wont be an extreme lag fest unless NASA is developing this game.

I would rather the dev’s of DF do it right the first time and take even 10-15 years to do it right. Then to just do it like ALL the other gaming companies. I mean we have all seen it before these companies just treat their work like a job and push deadlines for $$$$. There salaried programming employee’s that only care about that week to week pay check. The end result is us paying to play some beta…
I’m telling you all here and now this game will be successful because it’s not just about the money it’s about creating a free world. It’s about creating that unique experience none of us has ever had before… Finally at last a real challenge at our fingertips.
10,000 people per world that's a rough estimate it might be more much more. This has to do with server clustering technology, for example EVE can handle over 20,000 players online at the same time.
This works a bit differently than what were used to, the norm in the industry right now is 1 world = 1 Server, server clusters will have much greater capacity because you will no longer be dealing with only one server but a cluster of servers; a server cluster might have 10, 20, 30 or more servers that make up one world. This type of technology will be the norm in the industry in the future, servers no longer will consist of 2000 people but tens of thousands.
BTW this is one of the reasons DF and other games that run on this type of technology will have to be almost done or nearly done when they enter beta, reason is the cost of the cluster servers; they probably wont be able to run betas for a year or more on these servers because it will be too expensive if there is no flow of money coming in. This is also another reason why the game was pushed back, the technology is reletively new so i am curious how this will all work out when beta comes out.
I hope they pull it off, if not DF might be the longest developed game that got cancelled before it even releases.

Cool, did not know that. Sounds amazing and hope for the best. I really want this game to release, it's just hard not to be at least a little skeptical.

I agree with you to a point and dont mind waiting for a quality sandbox game such as this. But eventually they are gonna have to sh*t or get off the pot. Take 10-15 years?! This isn't the freakin space program, we're talking about a MMO. I would still like to play the game before I die of old age or some other unforseen circumstances.
If this game ends up being as good as it sounds and actualy have all these features like it says - it will be a great game.
But, I personaly think they are trying to have too much at one time for this game. And when it comes out it will either not have all the features; or only some of it will work and they will later have to release updates to get it all working.
I am by no means bashing this game, just making a statement.
I personaly would like to see a game like these but I don;t realy see it happening the same way asd they are talking about.
I have a feeling this will only be for people whom like PvP'ing. Seeing as you attack others anytime you like. I don't see how your are going to be able to just get in the game; quest; meet people; and sale thing with out things getting stolen.looted from you.
Here's a revolutionary idea for game developers--develop a game in secret and spring the completed game on an awe-struck public.
I'm still dreaming that someone is doing that, some super game is going to pop up and blow us all away.
I wish Darkfall would come out and be as fantistic as they planned, but it needed to come out in 2003 to do that. Now the graphics are already outdated, judging from the latest gameplay video.
You just can't spend 6 or more years developing a game when technology is advancing as rapidly as it is, and most of us are getting new computers and doubling or tripling our processor power at least every 3 years.
They started in 2001, and my current computer is 10 times as fast as my 2001 computer.

Yeah, Eve can handle all those players, though it's not entirely problem free. And Eve gets away with some of it by using what amounts to point and click movement. Also, there's very little animation going on to add to the strain on the server. Outside of player ships, and the handfull of NPC ships, the game world is static.
Darkfall, being a WASD game, is going to require movement prediction algorithms of some sort to account for latency.(Never mind what latency will do to combat) Combine that with all the animations required, and the fact that they claim to have a completely zoneless, seamless world, one of the largest online game worlds ever made, per their FAQ.
I don't know what kind of negative ping code they've cobbled up, but I hope for their sake it's pretty damned good, because being full loot pvp, and FPS, there's going to be very little tolerance for lag from the players.
Yeah but even though eve got 20k it's still one server, it's not a custer but they're the only ones that managed that many people mainly because they had to sacrafice allot of things to do it.
The biggest problem I forsee is not putting in Naval Battles, buildable cities, resources, FPS combat, blood and gore, mounted combat so on and so forth, those things are already in we seen some of those features in the video. The hold up are the servers and the clustering technology, and that has to be in and it needs to be optimized and working cause otherwise were gona get killer lag.
This is a gamble of sorts cause no one else has applied this type of tech to a game yet, so were not quite sure of what's going on and DF devs are keeping rather quiet, we only seen maybe 3 or 4 quotes about server clustering apart from that no one has any idea.

That's why other big gaming companies have hired hackers to try and steal the code they had a attempt just recently and the guy was caught and hes now in jail and they mentioned there was a few BIG names involed.
full open pvp always worries me as l337 haxxorz will always be jerk-offs who grief people for no reason..... only solution to that problem in a fully open PVP world is to give people reason NOT to kill random people.

Care to clarify where they said it was A) big name companies, and that involved meant hired?
Could, as others have stated in the quoted thread, mean he broke into, or attempted to, other companies as well. If it had involved a case of industrial espionage, particularly from Sony, EA, or Blizzard/Vivendi, or one of the other "Big Names" then you bet your ass that would have been picked up on by not only the gaming press, but the AP, and so forth as well.
Also, all he got was the client, not the network/server code. And it was an old test client at that. In all likelihood, he was nothing more than an employee from a gold farming outfit looking to reverse engineer the client for possible dupes/cheats, or an emu group, if he was anything more than a lone dumbass, doing what lone dumbasses do best.
Have to love people spouting about technology when they have no clue what is involved.
I am a system administrator and deal with IBM a lot. I know what Eve's server cluster costs them and it is BIG bucks. They have the fastest stuff IBM offers and IBM has always been known for having the some of the fastest servers around, not cheap by any means. Their technology is always ahead of most of the others in this field. I'd like to know how they are going to get funding for such a large investment in server equipment because you can't do what they are proposing on servers like Wow has.
Until I see a open beta test working I am going to be extremely doubtful of their claim.
All I see out of the dev posts is a lot of hype with no supporting facts.
Secondly, you can't have a sandbox where there are no controls on others actions. You just end up with a game like Shadowbane where only few play. The griefers drove off most of the populace. You cannot let griefers have control, only a small percentage of players will put up with such. I see nothing in any of their literature where they mention anything about this.
So even if they manage to get it to production, I have a lot of doubts about the success of the game.
Personally I would love to have them succeed, the only decent pvp game I have found lately is Eve. I would love to see a decent fantasy pvp game. We just have to wait and see I guess, but posting how great a game it is when no one has even seen beta is beyond irresponsible it is ludicrous.
Ciredrick is that true, I did not know EVE had a cluster server. Maybe they do who knows, one good thing coming from this is that you have a small studio that Developed EVE and introduced server cluster technology; that in my opinion is a hudge step and it's innovative too bad you don't see this kind of thing from larger gaming companies. It always tends to be the little guys that take the chances, there is still hope with DF if a small company can pull off EVE than it's possible for Aventurine to pull off DF but we will just have to see.
As for Pkers or griefers; you wont see level 70 guys running around killing level 1's, there are no levels in DF and hence no indication of what the player skill is. Also there's an alignment system that will help put a bullzeye on Griefers and griefing guilds; players can kill each other but when they do they're going to have to face the consequences of being alienated from their own Race. My guild will possibly be chaotic evil, so i am looking forward to fight my own race as well as other races; might provide a challange but i am looking forward to it.
The problem with alignment systems, and the like, is that they're reactive, no proactive.
By the time said griefer is hit with any penalty, the new player is already dead, and looted dry, and if they aren't fortunate enough to have joined the game with friends, they're pretty much proper fucked, as from there on they're defenseless against the griefer(s)
Most will just leave the game, while the griefer just merrily trots on to the next victim.
Given the lack of dependence on gear, and the fact that a player can learn enough skills to be totally self sufficient, making being kos in your hometown not that much of a problem, and you've got a pretty good groundwork laid for making a griefers paradise. And we all know how well player policing works. Having "hardcore" pvpers giving snarky smartass replies to new players doesn't help much either. Meanwhile the community wonders where all the new players went. Some people just never learn to not shit where they eat, I guess.
As for not telling who's a newb, and who's a serious threat, eh, unless you've got some "high level" player slumming it in newb gear, I guarantee there will be a visual difference gear wise between the newbs, and "high level" players. Won't be running around looking like GWAR with glowsticks, perhaps, but there'll be something.
Entirely Shameless fanboish video. Add to that, posts with entirely fact less opinions.
I love fans touting a game. I cant STAND fonboi`s touting one. They totally exacerbate and exaggerate what the game is, will be and could be. Darkfall is a great POSSIBILTY, like a few others now in development. It is in no way the be all and end all. There are tons of features that are regurgitated and reused, a ton of stuff that could be added if those developers were more creative and inventive. Darkfall is far from the sandbox most are shouting it is.
The next breed of MMORPG will be ushered in soon, but they aren’t even on the horizon yet. They are being written out, getting funding, and placing teams together. If you think this is “revolutionary” or “forever” you are probably going to have a seizure when you see what’s coming.
OH and ROFL@EvE had 20K players on 1 server….and doesn’t use server clusters.
Coldmeat this game will not be for everyone, no one is going to hold anyone's hand here the reason I would play DF would be for excitement and fun, other people might not be looking for the same type of experience as I am. When a person comes to DF with the mentality that he matters then he has the wrong type of mentality; DF focuses on guilds, cities, conquests and Kingdoms. Aint the game for carebears unless you wanna be a crafter and stay within the boundries of the city for protection 24/7.
Also not everyone can be on equal par, there will be Guilds in this game that will probably be within the top tier of pvp gaming, they will have experience and leadership as well as the mentality to succeed. Those people who fail, bitch and whine fail because they are not up to par; GAME MECHANICS are not supposed to account for people's stupidity in making bad decisions; granted some people might be turned off by this but for me this is a plus.
Alignment and NO levels will end the era of level 70s running around and ganking level 1's.

OH and ROFL@EvE had 20K players on 1 server….and doesn’t use server clusters.Hahahaha.

This game could turn out to be something interesting and maybe worth while..... however.
1. Looks very similar to Age of Conan with the whole "not button pushing" combat thing
2. Like the idea of no levels and all skill based, no class based, and the all spells can be used and weapons sorta thing.
3. I hate to say this, but it looks oddly suspicious, it's got the whole Vanguard thing goin on here (no offense to VG players, just saying)
Ah heck ill probably just get age of conan and darkfall, and try em both.
