Yeah, getting crucified is a cool achievement rather than something to be dreaded.  It's a concept likely to backfire once the game picks up pace.

So how is the game doing so far? I've always been interested but a little worried to commit to this game.

I have always greatly appreciated the wide-open freedom of the sandbox design and gameplay and all the player interaction, roleplaying and politics that results, but RedBedlam is still struggling with software performance, i.e. the game uses much more memory and video resources than you would expect and there are still issues with server lag, especially during battles.

Great game, poor client and server performance.  Although the performance has increased dramatically since release, the periods of lag are bad enough that I still cannot recommend the game for mainstream MMOG players just yet.

The client typically eats up about 1.2 GB of RAM and 1.2 GB of Virtual Memory in the main town, so you should have at least 2 GB of RAM.  And, unless you have at least a 256 MB Nvidia 6600 GT or ATI X1600, you are going to be getting less than 20 FPS in the main towns.

I have found that minimizing the game in windowed mode reduces RAM usage to only 100 MBs, which is a drastic change from the normal 1.2 GB used, however, over time the RAM use builds back up again until the game eventually crashes.

The performance is being improved through patches, but unless you are really into sandbox games, of which Roma Victor is one of the best, I would hold off until the performance issues are improved.  I'm sure you will see posts all over the place when the performance is brought up to par.

Some one hasn't checked the new client. The new client does does reduce the memory and virtual memory usage to a reasonable, but still on the high side, amount.
Not exactly sand box just yet. The only place that you can build things in the starter town and a few other locations (out of a possible 900). We are currently waiting for a 2 week late update that will change this.

Well, thanks for the honesty and keep the updates coming. I am sure eventually I will get this game. Stick with it soldiers!

Someone has checked the new client.  RV still uses about 1.2 GB of RAM plus 1.2 GB of Virtual Memory and growing when loading into Corstopitum.  The only thing that seems to have occured is that the VM increases more slowly than before.  The fact the game still uses over 2GB of combined memory is still remarkable.

you're wrong, it crashes at 1800 virtual. the game doesn't use that much RAM tbh...

also the VM still increases very fast, 30mb extra per projest site with one torch in it... not to mention items...
