I'm not going to return as long as Smedley is in charge and $OE is running the game. Period. The game now sucks, $OE is horrendous, and Smedley and the rest of upper management are, to put this somewhat nicely, of a most highly questionable caliber of intellect. Pay to be an ongoing beta tester if you wish, I have already learned my lesson and will not support a company who charges me to beta test for them and will so very drastically change the nature of said game not once but twice. I log onto these boards almost every day, the only reason I do is in the hope of seeing that SWG is being shut down and/or that $OE is being closed (which is the less likely of the two by far). I also hope to see that Smedley is fired, but my hopes and prayers in that vein are thus far unanswered. Classic servers be damned, these shills aren't getting another penny of mine.

Tho I'm still playing this is my turn off with Classic Servers...
Right now SOE looks to be heading in the right way with SWG. We've had a big lack of PvE content for sometime (something that 'has' been said with all 3 systems) Opening up a Classic Server would really be opening a big can of worms in the long term...
The best way to think of it is like taking a boxxer and putting him back in the ring and making him the star. At first the fans will love hearing that the guy is back in the ring. After they see him and they see the fact that he's 'old' and not as good as the younger guys the fans walk away. Better still that happens in Wrestling as much as I hate to bring it up, they will bring an old guy like Hogan or Warrior back, the fans will be screaming one week, the next week the fans see this old 55 year old guy who had no talent even back in the day in the ring.
Dare I say that would be the case with SWG, at first you'd get a ton of players coming back hearing "omg it's our old system!" After a month or two they would see that it's the 'old' system. It hasn't been updated in two years, it's still buggy, it still has all the faults as it did back in the day. And tho alot of you scream "We just want it back! Don't work on it!" You'd have players screaming to "Fix this on the Classic Server!!!"
Also remember that Players where leaving Pre-CU and CU. Alot of those players and guilds are now on other games, think they will drop there big guild on WoW to come back to SWG? A few may but not all of them, and how long will those that come back stay? I'd give most 3 months.
At this point the NGE is here to stay, if SOE was going to roll the game back or even open 'classic' servers they would have done it last year. Reguardless of all the rumors Bioware isn't going to swoop in and bring the Pre-CU back. Hell dare I say do you think Bioware would? All the games they have made or helped work on (The Forgotten Realms titles, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Fallout, even Mass Effect) Do use a level based system of some kind, and hell Mass Effect looks great but it's game play does look a 'tad' like the NGE.
We live in a gaming world where level based non-sandbox games are the big games. If that wasn't the case then Ultima Online would have beatten Everquest in sales and in Players back in the day. Due to all of this I don't think we'll ever see an SOE run 'classic' server.
I was a huge fan of pre-nge SWG. I also played post and found it ok and not as bad as many of us vets hoped it would be. What I realized was even if the game went back to pre-nge it is an old game, Graphics are dated, animations are dated, the games is simply pasts it's prime. Even if a classic server were launched I would not return. Games is just getting old. Time to put your old fond memories of pre-nge SWG aside and move on to other games. Talking about this is like talking about a lost love that broke your heart. You will never get it back and you will never understand what went wrong. You just have to move on and find a new love if you are lucky.
stop dreaming its not going to happen thats like saying Hey we were wrong you were right and that will never happen
yea got to agree with ya there...and im still suprise to see star wars galaxies filled with players :..how old is that game again?
SWG currently has a smaller subscriberbase than either UO or EQ. That is one reason that both EQ and UO are still seeing a substantial development investment, while SWG isn't. If SWG's dismal population was due to just age, it would still be substantially higher than it is now.
SOE tried to do the pull off the tablecloth without moving the plates and silverware trick. Unfortunately, most of the silverware and all of the plates came off with the tablecloth, so a majority of the people who were at the table got up and left. Now every time a new person sits down at the table, the people who are still there claim the table is crowded again, even though person who just sat down will soon get back up and leave, because sitting at that particular table isn't fun.
Although after the nge and all the BS that followed, a lot less than before.
But I'm still a sucker for what was Raph's vision.
P.S. I'd leave when a working EMU comes out.

I hate SOE, but i love SWG Pre-CU so of corse i would be back and sub again, and my SWG friends would too, many of them are current playing WoW, but they all would leave WoW for SWG Classic Servers.

I would go back and I would not care who run it. As long as it was pre cu.
As for the game looking dated. Well SWG is still the only game where your avatars look unique. Every single race/gender in new games today look like clones.
Huge player cities that looks fantastic. Houses which can be decorated with the largest amount of house hold items I have ever seen
Yes new games have a much higher polygon count but they look bland and don't stand out which is my number 1 hate in new mmo’s today.
You say animation are dated..... All the new mmo's have the same animation for 1 spell class all the way from 1-70. Spin attack 1 looked way diffrent than spin attack 3 in swg
I went back last week with the free 14day vet trial. The game still looks great. I tried my hardest to make myself like the nge but it simpley to awfull
Come back to what? A broken buggy game with absolutely zero content and a server with maybe 100 people on it at any given time? May as well log into the NGE...
Wow... way to overgeneralize there. I seriously think that SOE would have a lot more subs if they went back to pre-CU, due to quite a few vets would come back. I wouldn't, but I bet a lot would. So, it probably wouldn't be as populated as pre-CU time, but it would definitely be higher than "100 people on it at any given time". Also, the "zero content" shows how ignorant you truly are. Pre-CU was full of content... you just had to find it rather than it being force-fed to you (like majority of mmorpgs currently do).
I really enjoyed pre-cu, except certain times SOE would aggrivate me to no end with their decisions. Other than that, it was a really good game. But, apparently you think otherwise.

I agree. If $OE opened classic servers, the NGE servers would empty instantly, bringing along a majority of the fanbois too. The loss of 200k+ players didn't quite tell SOE how badly the NGE failed (and continues to do so), but the complete collapse of the NGE due to the availability of classic servers and a huge increase in subscribers would make the point painfully clear.
i'd probably come back. it was a lot of fun, but, it was many years ago...
i'm going to DL the 14 day trial today and see if it's shaped up a bit more... i've heard they've done a lot in the past year to really improve things....
Tabula Rasa is my last great hope for something I loved as much as pre-cu SWG. I have high hopes for TR, down let me down Lord British!
OK. What content was there? What could you do preCU that you can't do now? Template building is not content. Edit: Whack-a-mole grinding isn't content either.
Ok... lets take a trip down memory lane.
Krayt or Kimo hunting parties were fun. Especially sitting at the camps to prepare for such hunts; talking to your guildmates/party members. That was enjoyable most of the time. And, before you say that "camps are in NGE"... that was pre-NGE stuff that was killed when NGE came in (ranger/scout death) that was just rehashed and added back.
Being a musician/entertainer and interacting with all the patrons while healing their mind wounds with your show. That's how I began this game. (a couple of weeks after launch) It was fun, and I made a lot of initial friends due to my entertainment. Income was horrible, but it was still fun. However, that died with the stupid holo-grind... and NGE killed the wounds factor. I read the entertainment revamp, and I have to agree that the buffs are interesting.
Heck, to expand on the krayt/kimo hunting parties... general guild hunting parties were fun as well. Nothing like running around Dathromir and hunt those spider recluses (dang disease) or rancors (especially bulls). However, I would believe you would classify that as "Whack-a-mole grinding" but I found that to be content.
And, I really enjoyed doing taming runs, and raising my new pets. CH was the greatest class/profession I have ever played. No other game has gotten it quite right, IMO. Heck, I used to tame pets, raise them, then give them away to other starting CH's (or if the pet was below CL10, then to any player) for free.
Yes, pre-CU SWG didn't have any real quests to work with. You had to make your own content with what was provided. But, I found that enjoyable, and still is where I experienced my most memorable gaming experiences. You may not agree, and that's fine. To each his own.

Yeah... the worst move SOE did was they got rid of the pre-NGE code. (from what I've read) Therefore, when they saw the massive drop in subs, and the massive backlash of negative reviews of the game by enraged vets, they probably wished they hadn't destroyed the code. Because, they might have salvaged the horrendous press if they had just put pre-NGE back in. But, the phrase, "hindsight is 20-20" applies.

Pretty much everything you said is either in the game or (apparently) coming soon.
So.
Again, where's the content?
What is a player to do?
People THINK they want to start over. But they really don't want to be garden variety n00bs again for many months whilst waiting on good resource spawns. Some servers couldn't have T21's for as many as 6 months because a certain gemstone hadn't spawned. 6-8 months after it launches, the classic game will have the same problems it had before.
The initial push on the preCU servers might be decent (50K players), but would gradually shrink for the same reasons it shrank before: Lack of content Broken game mechanics Perceived profession imbalances Poison/Disease/Mind Fire Melee stackers Unhealable mind Jedi as an alpha class that is easily obtainable (mostly through AFK, macros, or exploited gameplay (Geo Cave overspawn, Endor overspawn, Warren overspawn).
I'm done with SWG and I'm done with SOE. It's just tht simple. For all of those who are still wishing for classic servers, I hate to bring you down but it's never going to happen. Find yourself a differnt MMO until you find something that will replace SWG. What's gone is gone and what lost is lost. The game we all loved is never coming back.
