    Yes, back to WOW.
Compare to WoW. I agree, the animations aren't as smooth or as good as WoW, but they aren't bad. Better than the majority of MMOs though. Textures are much better than WoW and better than most MMOs out there, maybe you were playing on super low quality settings?

Controls, agreed, not as smooth as WoW, but better than a lot of MMOs. As a former WoW player for over 2 years, I had a similar sluggish feeling the first few days. Once I understood the queue system and how best to time attacks, sluggishness was no longer a problem for me.

I do wish the buttons  could be resized. I play on a 20" Widescreen at 1680x1050 and the buttons are small for me. As far as the icons and not knowing what they do, it's not any different from WoW, only you took time to learn WoW through extended gameplay so I'm sure you can name a skill just by seeing the icon. Did you expect them to use WoW icons in LOtRO along with clones of the skills they are associated with? Learning any new game has a learning curve. I found the transistion from WoW to LotRO to be surprisingly smooth. If you had that much trouble, you may not want to bother trying anything but WoW because any game is going to require that you learn it before it will be as comfotable to play as a game you've been at for a while and some people just don't have the patience! :)

This game offers a lot and for most people will be worth playing. It won't be for everyone though, so no surprise that some people will try it then go back to their tried and true game. I just hope most people will give it more of a chance than the OP, because while I thought the intro was good on this game, it's far from a complete and accurate picture of how the game plays beyond first impressions.

For me..it's was just that the game was not compelling,,just another mmo.I found money WAY to tight and because the money was sooo scarce I could not afford to craft...a real negative for me.So I am on the sidelines again till AOC.

For the OP mouse over the skill buttons and a popup will appear giving a full description of the skill. Yyes money is tight if you craft I do not care for that either, but have found a very profitable profession where I can easily make silver using the auction house. Skills are qued and you cannot just blindly button mash and expect a good result, so if you are a big fan of WoW style combat you will probably never like the game.

Good luck to you though and at least you tried it and it did not cost you any money to find out that you prefer WoW.

Money will loosen up after the game goes live, they were trying to be careful not to let the economy run out of control before the game launched.  But crafting is still somewhat expensive at the moment (unless you find the "one" vendor that will sell you many key crafting materials and repair your armor for 50% less)

As to the OP, I really think you are still enjoying your time in WOW and came to LotRO looking for reasons to dislike it.  Thats OK, but if you ever get tired of yet another big raid.... give LotRO another go with a fresh pair of eyes....

My first impression was somewhat alike that of the OP. But believe me, this game grows better and better the more time you spend in it! It is a lot better then WoW in probably every way, except for character animations and size/blurriness of the quick bar.

However I do think Turbine might have shot themselves in the foot by having very bland "tutorial" areas (by this I mean where you spend your first 5-6 levels before you can go wherever you want). These might take about an hour to play through but are very boring and not at all like the rest of the game. Hang in there and give it a couple of weeks and you will probably fall in love with it. Also, they are using the IP very well I think.

Hmm, For a fantasy game designed from real life the animations are amazing. (If you play on low quality I may see where your coming from cuz it may seem choppy). Low setting are for those running below even the minimum required though.

     bad looking textures

Not sure what game you were playing to say bad textures, but they are amazing (Also refer to if you were playing with below minimum settings on a shaudy computer it may not come out nice as the textures are directly optimized by graphics cards)

    sluggish control

Sluggish controls? Ok I can say they are not as quick as some other games but they are far from sluggish. They respond when I press the button. It does exactly what what I want when I want it. There are delays put in between activation of different skills "Global" cooldowns, but you play WoW so you should know about that.

tiny skill buttons,no idea what they do, not different from each other, just press the little buttons, al the time staring at those buttons, what the hell is this?

Just like in your beloved WoW you can do a scroll over and look at what they do in your skill log by pressing "C" and clicking on skills just like the Spellbook of WoW. I understand if this concept goes over your head, but its OK it is there, but logging on at level 1 seeing it and making a base judgement without going through the tutorial does tend to lose some people hence the reason for a tutorial.

    Yes, back to WOW.

I think it's going to be a decent game, no more and no less. Personally, I don't like games with a predetermined storyline -for example SWG, LoTRo- because you know in advance which way the world is going -if it evolves at all-.

Can't say I'm impressed with the game as well. I've been playing Lineage 2 for a long time and graphics are a far cry from several years old L2 graphics.

I play on 1920x1200 on high-end PC with maximum details. Icons are kinda small at first when I didn't know what they were. But I got used to them. The beginning is boring like with pretty much every RPG I've played.

I hate the fact that there is almost 0 recorded speech. Graphics could have been a lot better. I'll have to play a bit longer to decide what I think about the combat.

But so far I haven't had a single crash or seen a bug.
  • altairzqaltairzq Member Posts: 3,811
I did try the Ultra High before saying anyting of course.

I also tried in Ultra low to make sure the not so good control response wasn't due to a CPU or graphics load.

My PC is decent, not too high but decent.

I'm not an ignorant I think, just a plain normal guy.

I don't know what kind is my kind but ok.

I looked at the skill tips, one said it had a double attack, and the other one said I could do a second attack a high speed or something of the kind. I had read about tactics in combat, how you could time every skill to maximize the attacks but with those tiny buttons and they way they work, I bet most of the people won't bother.

Believe me or not, I regret I won't get to know the cool features this game have.

Believe me or not, I don't love WOW, it's only that I've worked hard to learn to like it, playing in RP realms and trying to overcome its limitations. But I have to admint, the smootness and precise response of the character to the controls have me hooked. Also the great qualilty of the 3D engine.

Can't they make MMORPGs with the quality of WOW and the features of the newer ones?
  • crusher143crusher143 Member UncommonPosts: 198
Hmm graphics were nice cant really complain here, I didnt see yet a MMO with better graphics actually. Things which annoys me are these....

    - Questbook / Background for tooltips, why the hell its just all black ? Why the Questlog doesnt look like a book or something. The tooltips and the font also could look better, it wouldnt even need much time to improve this.

    - Well combat is ok but really it could be a bit smoother.

    - Animations yea they are ok too but like the combat could be a bit better.

    - Classes, well thats actually my biggest concern there really is no class which would interest me much. Iam a caster player, I like to play a Mage / Necro / Warlock or something like this. Tried the Lore-Master but its more like you debuff your enemy so he attacks slower and then you slap him with your staff, its a bit lame :/. Hunter is a bit boring too, you can even shoot with your bow at 1 feet distance, no kiting nothing its boring. Champion was ok to play. So I have the feel this game is focused to much on melee classes :/

    - UI, hmm why the hell I cant scale the UI its all so small i can barely see the debuffs on my enemies, its annoying.

Well the little things wouldnt be a point for me to say I wont play but the classes are so damn boring :( especially for me as a caster player. But I can understand if ppls like this game, its not so bad.

    Yes, back to WOW.

    Bad Animations

Well since you're coming from WoW here, I guess you were expecting the exaggerated animations of WoW. It's not the case with LOTRO - they're more realistic and often subtle to the eye; not blatantly obvious like WoW. I guess that if you still don't like them even after knowing this, then it's probably down to a matter of personal preferance. I'm on a RP server and see people having fun with the emotes all the time, and saying in OOC how good the animations are, but also saying they could be better - like not being able to sit down and /smoke. As for combat - it feels fluid and fun once you get to later levels and start chaining skills together - far better than the 3 or 4 abilities you get at the start.

    Bad Looking Textures

Wow. I'm now wondering if you were playing this game with low textures setting. I'm sure Hairysun wont mind me grabbing this from his post but:

That's what some NPC's generally look like on full whack. And I could show you more examples, but Hairysun has already done that in his post:

    http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/124827

Now... what's wrong with those textures?

    Sluggish Control

I'm assuming you mean combat here, as the control overall feels like just about every other MMO out there. Because you're coming from WoW, I know what you mean about combat - WoW is quick fire snap one off at the wrist kind of combat, but LOTRO is more fluid and paced out, and there's a bit of timing involved. I hear that the Devs want to improve this area of the game within the first month of release though, so they think it could be better too. At the moment, it works well for me.

    Tiny Skill Buttons

You must be running the game in a pretty high resolution for the buttons to be tiny. Yes it would be nice to be able to scale up the buttons for a large screen size as they're a pretty fixed size at the moment. Good thing about Turbine though (and some say a bad thing) is that they listen to the players wishes and make changes where they feel are needed. I'm sure this will be sorted out in an update (like what happened with EQ2 if I remember right).

    ...Not different from each other

AFAIK - every skill has a different visual icon. I'm not sure what you mean - different in what way? - like different shapes or something? - they all look different to me...

    Just press the little buttons...

Yep, um... that's what you generally do with buttons - like in WoW.

Al the time staring at those buttons...

Maybe that's why you thought the textures were bad?... perhaps you were too busy immersing yourself in a strange button fetish?

    What the hell is this?

    My thoughts exactly...

    Yes, Back to WoW

    Have fun with those buttons!

I woud agree with you normally but let's think...

We can't have several thousand wannabe Frodo's carrying the ring can we?

So what they've done is place you in a support role in the overall story arc. You do battle with orcs, you kill goblins, you discover new ares to gain quests to do more stuff. One of the most exciting quests is to retake Weathertop just after they leave the Shire.

You do take part in the story and that becomes your story. Very good it is too!

And it will evolve. The devs have said (I know!) that the arc will continue. Personally I'm really looking forward to continuing with this. It will be a fun journey.

No, they can't. Blizzard has the resources of a small planet to use to create their games. Many companies who are making MMO's do not have the capital to produce games at the quality level that Blizzard puts out because Blizzard is a juggernaut in gaming. Basically every game they make sells off the charts. If you want a new game with the quality of WoW just keep playing WoW until World of Starcraft or World of Diablo makes its debut, otherwise realize that the new MMO's that release just will not meet your expectations unless a couple of game giants join forces to bring the Behemoth down.

I find it hard to believe it's that expensive to make a solid 3D engine, good controls and good animations. For the videos I've seen, Warhammer seems to have good animations and models. Hope good controls too. And many single player games have that too. And Age of Conan looks good too. We'll see.

Those are my own screen shots from my own pc with everything set to ultra high. So I seriously have no idea about what the hell you are talking about.

Hint: If you got the pre-order beta demo from a brick and mortar store you got the high resolution client like I did. Oh and the first picture is of my champion in the Shire and the second is with my hunter taken in front of Thorin's Gate outside. Currently playing a burglar and really digging the game play of that class.
