Casual op on LOTR:O

a casual player on LOTR :

Old Fart - It seems LOTR does not have the polish or quest system that WOW has but I might be hooked anyway.  At first I was disappointed with the graphics but that could be my system (P2.4 500MB ATI Rad 9700 pro 128MB XP).  On low settings it runs with no lag, cable.  I'm early in the game, want to see if the monster thing will work.  Its worth the free beta for those wondering.

I'm playing a Champion lvl 7 (tons of insight here )

Questing - simple, with a purpose and side quests that you can accomplish as you go (these yield special titles)

Graphics - might depend on system, I was not impressed but neither turned away.  My teenager loved the graphics and thought it was as good as WOW (she may need glasses)

Sound - not so good

World Feel - not yet, feels more like zoned areas.  It does not have the UO go anywhere feel.  Im early on this one and my op might change later.

Armor - sucked at first but it grows on you.  If you played wow then the armor thing might be disappointing if you love to take pics and stare at your toon.

Community - no clue, low level newbies dont talk much anyway.

Combat - enjoying.  My expectations in mmorpgs are low on combat, Im a BF 2142 twitch fan.   I like the que combat moves which provides some thinking.  I also think that some of the mobs have actual AI.

Price - worth the free beta before putting out the cash.

Addiction - High.  Be warned this game could end your job, sex life, social life and family life.  If you are trying to escape the real world do not play.  20 hours plus a week is a bad thing.

UI - think wow but improved in some ways.

Something - this game has something that is getting me to play.  I simple dont know what that something is right now.  This game might be worth a 2-3 year run.   I'm starting to believe that few mmorpg games will be able to keep my attention longer then 2 years.

Eh, it's very system dependent I think.  If you have a nice card and some good RAM, the graphics are actually stunning in the game -- while at low settings they are pretty lackluster (as in many games at low settings).  Also, if you are using the downloaded free world tour client, you do not have the "high res client", and that makes a big difference.  The "high res client" was made available on the pre-order DVD, and will be available on the boxed DVD release versions as well.  If you have the high res client and a system that can handle the graphics, at higher settings they are simply superb.

    Sound - not so good

I find the music a bit annoying, because of its repetitiveness, so when it gets to me I turn it off.  I think WoW has better atmospheric sounds as well, but it's not a big issue for me.

They're very little zoning in the game, and to me the areas feel very contiguous and not "zoney", as is the case in WoW where even though there are no load screens, zone transitions are dramatic and sudden ... here I can swim across the Brandywine river from The Shire into Breeland and it feels like a contiguous area (ie, like I would expect the other side of the river to feel), not like a radically different "zone".

Armor - sucked at first but it grows on you.  If you played wow then the armor thing might be disappointing if you love to take pics and stare at your toon.

It's nicer at the higher settings.
