So I was trolling the LOTRO forum.
There was a post there written by an obviously upset former HARDCORE WoW player.
To sum up his post,
Wow has gone to shit with the BC expansion.
Hardcore is mmorpg is dead.
This was done for the kiddies.
LOTRO is for older players for x, y, z reasons, one of them being the community out there.
but...thats not all. As all threads do, it degenerated.
responses to this post was,
HARD CORE PVPr's don't know what they want, play an fps if u want hardcore pvp. Mmo's are meant for pVE.
WAR and AOC are not real MMORPGS cause of their combat systems and focus on PVP.
blah blah blah
The general consensus was that Kiddies are the ones who love pvp because of the, and I quote "I pwn j00 r0x0rs" factor and
"hardcore mmo players are all about raiding and endgame content and the quest for uber gear"
Well I've been wondering for a while now, who plays what and how.
I am retired "semi-hard core WoW player" and general veteran of gaming, nearly 20 years, I've played every type of game on every type of system. I've been friends with hardcores, i've been friends with kids who had the cool games but always had to be bugged to death before they let me play. FU KYLE!
I want to know who has time to be a hardcore? I mean really.
Even when I was into WOW and was Semi-hardcore, I was only able to do so because I graduated University and was home for the summer. I didn't work because I planned to go teach English abroad. My good friends lived in other cities because they went to school there. I was single at the time also.
Basically it was the summer of Juggy, and Juggy wanted to play this game he heard of called WOW.
And I did. Logged many hours daily. Advanced many characters to beyond 50.
I basically had to disappear to do that. People were pissed that I rarely went to visit.
To make a long rambling story short,
-Never went to Asia
-Got a girlfriend
-Went to do a post grad
-Now work full time.
I come home at 6pm.
Have bills to pay and looking to move in with the "wife".(we're not married but I could see it)
If I'm not with her I'm cruising forums or playing Oblivion/FiFa 07/BF2142/Company of Heroes.
So back to what I was saying earlier,
A.Pissed off hardcores complain about Kiddies and how they ruin games or about how games go to shit(become more accessible to the casual gamer in an effort to increase the player base.)
B.Pissed off hardcores are adults who somehow manage to work 8 hour days, eat and sleep, as well log 8 hours of MMO gaming daily.
C.Kiddies are not only minors under the age of 18 but older then 9, but also any gamer who is not hardcore.
D.Hardcores are masters of the game and are the ones who are first to beat everything and find exploits leading to nerfs.
E.Regular gamers see hardcores for what they are but still generally stand in Awe of their gear/achievements.
F.Regular/casual gamers resent being called kiddies by the elitist Hardcores.
SO we get...
Hardcore Fantasy argument - Hardcores hate kiddies because kiddies wreck the game with their behavior and lack of commitment and rigidity.
and
Reality - Hardcores wreck the game for themselves by a.finding exploits that cause developers to make change to maintain a state of balance so that casual gamers will have fun playing in all facets of the game. and b. Beating everything in record time to where content becomes boring and repetitive, creating unbalanced economies, creating elitist in-game social rules, alienating new gamers and being generally cranky.
In the end you have a general public moving away from games because their sick of the community and the endless changes in the game. The game dwindles to a small group of diehard hardcores who then come to forums to bitch and moan about how kiddies ruined it all.
Then they "regretfully" leave their game and move on like a pack of wolves to a new game. The y "hang it up" like a bunch of would be superstars. Talk about ego.
Anyway...
I'm gonna get flamed to shit but oh well.
So how many kiddies are gonna play this game?
Have you been scared off by all the hardcores who've posted here?

Who really cares?
This poll thing is gotten out of hand. They make polls for everything especially for meaningless stuff like this.
NO offense to the op but no one cares.
2 months ago I transitioned from 8-12 hrs/day + full time job to my current 5-10 Hrs a week.
I burnt myself out for over four years playing like a freak and I still crave the whole hynotic lockdown online gaming gave me. It's just that I like my girlfriend more. tbch.
Well, I'm what many would call hardcore, I play 4-8 hours a day every day. However I do NOT like PvP, and I do NOT like raids. I play MMORPGs for the RPG content of it. I solo 99% of the time, and I could give a rats ass about uber gear.
To me, MMORPGs are like Baldur's Gate but without an ending. I liked SWG way back, pre jedi village, the crafting was important and there was no levels. It was tough, be ye noob or veteren.
All the games that are out now have major problems with them, but, they all also have their own saving graces (well, except SWG)
WoW is fun,a lot of fun, untill level cap when you are forced to play one of two styles of play (raid or PvP)
EQII is fun and hard at the same time. I'm not sure wether or not I like the no healing potions, but it makes it harder, which I like, but I hate that they mix in Heroic and epic mobs with regular mobs (EoF expansion is awesome for us soloers!! They got rid of this crap)
SWG, Well, It's got Wookiees. To list it's down points would take me a long long long time.
WWIIO, cool idea, but I just can't get past the graphics
Roma Victor, same as WWIIO.
Horizons, like SWG without the Wookiees.
WAR, I was excited for this at first, but I probably won't play it. I'll wait tilla free trial comes around.
I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self.

A nicely written post, with "fact" written through what you see through yoru own eyes.
But I commend it!
To me and my friends we see "kiddies" as the ones who do not like pvp.
I think I have stated this in my older post and perhaps an editorial. People born pre 1982 played video games that were more co op and player vs player. We had to go to the arcade to get the best gaming out there. Arcades where huge in the late 80's through mid 90's during the "street fighter" era. I remember sitting in line for 15 minutes waiting to get my shot at the top player. Then we had to deal with the rise of "madden" and other sports player vs player games. Then when computer gaming became an option, UO and Dark Age of camelot where what we ran into. So in my opinion thats why my generation is more pvp minded. not totally not 100% but for the most part. The early RPG games played by our generation where group oriented. 4-7 classes set out and kill the major bad guy. the healer healed, the fighter fought and the mage wove spells and was squishy.
While people born late 80's and early 90's have had home computer systems and non group oriented RPG's (final fantasy 7, any person can be a mix of any class and abilities, and only 3 people) in this generation of RPG's you hardly ever died and where usually vestly more powerful than the enemies you encountered. There was no real threat, and no real competition which led to people enjoying being a walking got more than they enjoyed a challenge out of their games. This generation didnt have competitive arcade games, and arcades are now barren. By the time this generation came of age, world of warcraft was the first real game they could sink their teeth into. the game is offensive heavy, pve oriented and a huge power trip as you can bolster your charachter to heights to make them a god amungst men.
The amount of kids in daoc was very small. My nephew never made it past level 35 in daoc, but somehow managed to make himself a rank 8 undead rogue in WoW only 1 year and a half later. Hard games and games dificult to operate dont appeal to the younger crowd for the most part. WAR is a very tactical game, and you not only have tons of skills, but you can only use a few of those skills every battle. No 100 hotkeys to pick from your 20 abilities, its 60 abilities with 20hotkeys. So you have to set yourself up for how you are going to perform in the group.
For example. I am a Zelot. I have speced my zelot for Hexes. (buffs and debuffs) now I cant change my spec to all of the sudden jump out and unleash murkblast at my enemies, but I can tweak how I go about hexing. This fight I can gain 5% more effect on my hex of weakness which also gives me a 5% raise to my hex of might leach. but if I take this tactic I wont have that extra 2% on my spel criticals and I may also miss out on the 5% mana regeneration and 10% faster morale gain. Now as I was typing this and you are reading this about 50% of you ADD'd out and skiped to the bottom. If you cant read a whole "wall of text" you may not be the type to fit into an very complex game such as WAR.
The tweaking you do and tactics you take add flavor to your charachter. You will never be a god amungst men and you have to do alot of thinking, so in the end this game will not appeal to the younger crowd in my opinion.

To me, why play an MMO to kill computer controled monsters?
To my brother he thinks why play mmo's to pvp team vs team when you should be out doing RvR 50 vs 50
To my nephew he thinks why play an online game to pvp, go play a FPS
we all love what we love. The reason why we are able to have such a large site here at mmorpg.com is because there are lots of games that fill the needs of many people.
Do you think i'm a kid?
I have been playing online games for well over 10 years now.. even one of my jobs was playing everquest so you can guess i put in a lot of hours with these games..
Think i have problly played most mmorpgs.. i did play wow when it was first released in the US but I am from the UK and during the first year of WoW the pvp lag was stupid so I gave up after lvl 30.
Last mmorpg I played for a long time was EQ2 had a pritty high level monk..
Anyway I have kind of gone from hardware from when i played EQ for a living to just semi-casual because I just dont get the time anymore and the gf would kill me haha plus there is nothing out there at the moment that can keep me interested.. was in the beta of lotr but i got real bored real fast.. everything is the same old same old but with new graphics who knows maybe this or conan will be somthing different
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
to answer your question simply - yes.

I would consiter a 16 year old a kid not only since I am 30 but also because the majority of the country would call minors "kids"
Nothing is wrong with being a kid though.
I am glad my post made you more interested in the game, I try my best to relay what they tell me about the game and to pop the bubbles of minconception people have about the game.
Yes you are.
damian7 already said it.
Hmm, 34, mature, yet have no qualms about naming a character Clamlapper. I have a full time job, play 6-8 hours a day on average, more on weekends/days off. I enjoy raiding, as much as I enjoy pvp. I also enjoy exploring, and doing 101 other things that could vary from day to day, or even hour to hour. I don't min/max, I don't give a ass rats about my xp/hour, or what gear I've got, etc. I like to play unusual specs, and/or unpopular classes.
I am hardcore, yet casual. Mature, yet have a sense of humor. 100% Killer, Achiever, Explorer, and Socializer.
So much for stupid stereotypes.
At the age of 34, allthough im not nearly as sharp as I once was, I love pvp. Ive played every FPS ever developed, but frankly, have a hard time against the new generation of younger, twitchier players. To me the much slower pace of MMO pvp allows me and my similarly aged cohorts to put our years of tactical knowledge to better use. All things being equal, if i dont have any more pressing concerns, i may put in 4-8 hours a night playing, but i dont think that makes me 'hardcore' by any stretch. Trying to define playstyles is really an exercise in futility, ive found, as there always seems to be alot more exceptions to the rules than origionally thought.

Efficiency is key. Waste no time with small talk with coworkers, cause frankly, they're all idiots anyways. No rolls, and coffee. Bad for the health, and slow you down. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. No stopping for yellow lights, pedestrians, or much of anything else. Eat dinner out of the pan. Saves on dishes.
Sleep is for the weak. Plenty of time to sleep when dead.
