City of Heroes / Villains maybe? Other then that there is none, modern time isn't a hot point for devs, because it's too real to life. Why play a game to play your real life.... even more boring then the eairly and future timed games.
Play BF2 or AA.... that's the only games I can think of "modern" set (not MMORPGs but FPS).
City of Heroes/Villains is still good for new players. It's easy to play, fun, and has a great community. I've played it for about 3 years now and had a great time.
If you're willing to wait, Fallen Earth looks interesting. It is sci-fi, but not as much as EVEOnline.
Without knowing more about what you want, you should go down the left side of the browser and click on any game that looks interesting and look into it. Just skip over RF Online. It's awful.
I'd say you can stick with Second Life, or The Sims. Personally, I'd cut off internet access for either of these games, but they are about all you're gonna find for "modern" mmos. Perhaps you'd be better off with a multiplayer FPS.

What I mean about "modern" is like "non-medieval" nor "sci-fi". I want something like NOW, in the modern day with cities.
