Says the game is designed for group-based content, but solo is viewed as a mean to do something while looking for a group...

Not really a game designed to allow solo as an equally rewarding playstyle in my book.

same thing with FFXI, which is why i quit, and alot of people hate that game

    too bad really :-(

  • ramadinramadin Member Posts: 1,304

No, the thing that killed FFXI is the fact they make you party with people 1 lvl above or below you.  Aside from that if you want to play a solo game all the time dont play MMORPG's.

OKay just to ask a silly question but what is the point of soloing in a MMORPG? If you want to solo why not just play a single player RPG on your home computer and save all those monthly fees?

  • TheLostPoetTheLostPoet Member Posts: 7
not a silly question at all.. but, i guess for me its the fact of being able to solo if you want, soloing in a world thats full of life, group if you want, talk to / make friends if you want..   :-)

    frist time posting

to the Big solo debate, I like to solo as well, not becasue i don't like groups, but it is hard to find a group doing the quest your doing, plus all of us have real lives that sometimes events happan that we can't play long or have to go away from the keyboard while in the middle hanging up the group. Plus asking strangers for help makes me feel helpless don't want that. The reason I like mmorpgs over single player games because the groups i have been in have been fun plus mmorpgs are always changing unlike singleplayer games it fun loging in seeing the new things and tring to reach a new level in the game.

Plus Rathma does the woot for city of heroes means it is a good solo game? or I am thinking of going with FFXI because two friends play wanting to be a dragoon with a dragon pet wondernig if i can solo when my friends are busy or don't have time to play together. Thanks

Grouping is much better than solo anyhow! Being able to solo while looking for groups is fantastic, im sure the EQII team knows what they are doing. I like to solo too when you get tired of players that are just setting you back, but there are those times when you get in a group and there is nothing better. You'll be fine!image

    Why solo?

When grouping I tend to die more often, a LOT more often than solo. Other than loot in most games the exp is better solo in any game that has exp loss or debts. If I gain 25% more exp grouped, but die twice as often, where is the better progress?

Why do I die more? Groups tend to pull higher level mobs, are prone to over pulls, running when things go bad tends to happen too late or people try to be a hero save others. All these and others tend towards more deaths, TPWs and long or impossible CR's.

Now as to loot, it is only appropriate that the best loots come from mobs that cannot be soloed, or not soloed until the loot they drop is way lower in level rank than the soloer is.

    To solo? or to group?

I'de deffinately have to go with grouping. Groups are so much more fun guys, honestly! You get to fight larger and harder mobs, you get to see other character professions in action, you get to experience near-death experiences right before the doc pulls of a healing spell on you! You generally receive better loot when fighting in groups. You meet new friends (sounds corny, but true) and get some tips from other experienced players.

Sure you might die more, but thats the fun of groups. Sometimes you'll get one that really clicks together and you never die. Sometimes you'll get into a totally noob group and die a couple times. Now as someone said a couple posts up, they love to solo in a world full of up-to-date news, excitement, and community. We'll thats completely true, but grouping in a world full of up-to-date news, excitement and community is deffinately twice as fun! haha

For me, i quite FFXI because they really really messed up on the whole customization issue. For me, an MMORPG isnt a true MMORPG unless you can stand out as an individual and look cool! FFXI was so bad for that, they literally made it so that once you reached a certain level, you could buy the same armor everyone else at that level had! I was interested for approximately 2 weeks before i realized how bad of a game FFXI was. Oh yea, they also smashed the White Mage class. I mean he practically pulled FULL aggro on a mob, they would always try and kill the white mage! And they deffinately COULD NOT solo - haha. But my buddy as warrior had no trouble soloing?

In conclusion, i hope EQ2 is a group based game :) Of course not 100% group, but i mean i hope most of it is! I've got 4 buddies who i get into MMORPGs with, so we always team. Nice chatting!

hi, solo is fun as you can go and do as you want. i like groups if they split the loot fairly and dont have a loot hog in group. groups are also fun if they work together and dont sit there for 20 to 30 mins trying to figure out what mobs to fight. thats the main reasons i fight solo most times. also im not as fast on clicking on a mob to start fight or if a group is around it i have trouble targeting mobs sometimes. but with the right group a game becomes more fun and enjoyable i agree with that. looking forward to EQ@ and Odessey X to see if some good ppl play them. also im not into pvp which most ppl are so again hard to find a group. i like to be a crafter also, so my fighting skills are usually weaker.

If it will be a grouping based game please don't put North Americans with some other people on the same server. I mean I don't think English - French is a big deal but don't do anything crazy like English - Nigerian and we are stuck when trying to group because no one understands each other.

  • FarseenFarseen Member UncommonPosts: 344

See they have set up grouping to actually be more benificial for XP and loot when you group.... which is good because thats one thing that turns people away from groups. But some people are on differant time zones and scheduals and you just can't get a group.

I remember in EQ when i couldn't get a group... I would just go solo. It was easy being a Druid, or Shadowknight. Sometime there were some right nob heads aswell, and it was just best to leave a group than waste your playing time talking to them.

I feel the need to be free in a game, sure encourage grouping.... but don't punish and restrict soloers.

There are so many people who can't understand the basic concepts of the game either and end up getting you killed in groups.. at least if and when you die soloing there is no one to blam other than yourself... or lag hehe

That would sum up my feelings as well.  I loved to group when it was good and the group was good, but there are those days when all you want to do is go out and kill and not have to worry about anyone else but you.  I think that is what SOE has seen and thats what I think they understand and will try and to keep this game open in that respect.

About why soloing in MMORPG, the answer is so simple but should be so obvious :)

We like variety.  We don't have the time or mood to group every time we play.  It's much more fun to know you can play different ways in a game than knowing there is only ONE playstyle supported.

I consider any game that force the same playstyle over and over an inferior game compared to a game promoting different styles.

The Solo vs Group question is more like a few time vs lots of time available question also.
In EQ I had lots of fun grouping and soloing. But after lvl 50 I was forced to group but at the same time the time amount to find a group is increased by a huge amount which was too much for me with my available play time. This resulted in forced soloing and with the huge XP required to level I quit EQ.

    Betatested:

AC2; Lords of Everquest; Horizons; Fung Wan Online; Wish; Saga of Ryzom.

    Played:

    EQ; DAoC; Horizons; SWG; Shadowbane

Oh there is one server if i read faq correctly it is one big world, not 100 servers with same tiny worlds. And truely i hate to group with US players, thanks god for my time zone, they sleep when i play:)))))

But returning to topic if soloing will be availible only for 1-2 hours i will definitely don`t buy this game, i want to have open chose: group or not to group, if i don`t want to group i could do so, if i want to group i could do so too. I don`t tell which is better as grouping with good peoples (not US:) is always more fun but sometimes i want to be alone, explore new areas, fight with mobs there and so on, i don`t want to be forced to group, encouraged yes but not forced. If they want force me to do something and i need to pay for this i will rather wait for dark and light...
