This is true.

More recently, I have had first-hand experience with training simulators in the Marine Corps that were then later modified and released for the public commercially as games.

Check out this somewhat related article about EVE Online:

I spoke with a WoW player today. It was like mastrubating with a pair of scissors, fun in the beginning...then mostly pain.

He could not understand why anyone would have player freedom to do quest. Then i told him there isnt a quest MMO. Thats was impossible for him to understand. Then the conservation went out of hand.
Tax is a troll.  Check out "her" profile.  Special attention to join date, gender, age, and the fact that every single post that it has made is basically the same thing, all ragging on Darkfall with nearly the same text every time, in often unrelated threads.  The first posts it used literally say, "Darkfall, your taxes are due!" or something like that.  Looks like he/she/it created the account a couple weeks ago specifically to troll on Darkfall.  If it really is 27, I feel sorry for it.

Didn't they say they were just a bunch of dudes who wanted to create an mmorpg they would like to play? :|

Lol, hopefully Darkfall doesn't turn out to be vaporware, but eh. O, by the way, if you're one of the rabid fanboys who sucks every little piece of info out of the cock you call the DF website and never questions Darkfall, that doesn't mean you deserve the game, it means you're a sheep :D.

Not to point out the obvious, but many many people in the military play MMORPG's.  It makes sense that people in defence services companies would want to make entertainment products to sell to their customers as well as making everything else they can think of that their customers want to buy (even if they didn't know they wanted it).

Besides, it's quite possible that making an MMORPG is the computer-person version of soldiers going hunting - they know what they like, they have the skills, give them time and just don't get in their way!

Of course it's still vapourware until you can actually log in the month after it started, and the world did not end when you stepped beyond the newbie area.  But all games are like that, some just take longer than others to condense, and of course some just sublimate when they get "NGE'd"

    Okie now the funny stuf:

The Greek Government published a law on 30 of July 2002, the so-called "Greek Law Number 3037" which explicitly forbids electronic games with "electronic mechanisms and software" from public and private places. This includes all electronic games that run on home computers, on GameBoy-style portable consoles and on mobile phones.

    Official announcement ( in Greek ): users.forthnet.gr/the/geoanas/law.pdf

    Random English article: news.com.com/2100-1040-956357.html

<Mod edit> Of course, its not possible to create a company that manufactures forbidden material, so since that date, Software development in Greece is always stated as "Warfare simulation software develoment"

It might sound funny but its 100% true ( and 120% Greek )

    Hope that helped.

    <Mod edit>

    Edit: fixed a link

So, what you say is, that we were officially humiliated for banning gambling and/or porn companies out of public places?? I say that you watch way to much television. You should read a book instead and -maybe- you might understand how the game is played.
Good riddens with all those junk companies, there are better things to do in Greece...

errr.... you sure you read the posts? They're saying that they've banned video games not porn and gambling companies....

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

I know very well what I am talking about.
    Obviously, you dont.
In short, Greek authorities decided to originally ban gambling and porn video machines, but given the ingenuity of those almost illegal companies, they were masquerading them under other video games, and at a flip of a switch what was previosuly an innocent game of chess turns now in a 5 stud strip poker. So they took a large hammer and ban everything, and I say good riddens.

  • EulampiosEulampios Member Posts: 48

Sorry Ddev, but (as you are Greek yourself) please read the government's newspaper and tell me where it bans pornographic material.

Yes, gambling went banned because gambling is a GAME.

Yes, the law was intended to have force only against gambling, but it does ban all games ( as stated in Article 1), not those that give you a chance to win money ( which will be rather easy to do )

Other than that, i will translate the first paragraph of Article 3, that answers almost all of the questions.

"Article 2 is NOT enforced on companies that work as Internet providers ( aka Net cafes ). However the operation of ANY game on those computers, despite the kind and use of the game, is forbidden"

    Thanks :)

The parliament's newspaper is NOT a place to post gossips or colourfull illustrations :)
It's an instrument that contains all of the nation's procedures that YOU and ME have voted prior.
In any case, for this particular law, they were after all those gambling/porn machine that were spreading like mashrooms here and there. As if Casinos weren't enough, people were atually losing fortunes for some stupid and addictive video game. And because these were under NO control Las Vegas seemed like paradise ...
Aventurine currently employs 24 developers in-house and six professional contractors. The staff is international from Norway, Greece, Italy, the UK, the US, Denmark, and France. Its activities, other than Darkfall, are research into game and simulation technologies. We've also advised war-game simulation military projects in the past through other companies in our group, activities that have given us some valuable perspectives to be used in game development.
Ok it all makes sense now, Aventurine S.A is a Defense Contractor that's using their past experiance in game simulation technologies to make Darkfall.

Serious money in the defence industry. Must be nice with such backup.

     Want to know something funny?

Tasos once stated that the only reason Aventurine was formed was to build Darkfall.. Yet low and behold they work on defense projects too??.

None of which have ever been named or seen. Of course...

Kind of contradicting don't ya think.

Unlike the history with Razorwax, however, the answers to "why" and "how" and "who's got the money?" are left completely up to speculation. People are curious, and they want to know exactly what it is they're following.

Oh the company were only created to make Darkfall you say? How come Aventurine SA is one of the companies under the Exhibitor list 2006 then? Freetickets for the MMORPG creators?

Aventurine SA is there together with companies like Boeing and Bell. Sounds like big money to me.

What do you guys think? WHy would a Defense Contractor be involved in a MMORPG? I wonder who's backing them financially.

    You "think" ?

Its not secret, they have previously said they have the funding of Greece's Military and they have made programs for them....

Which is why I don't think they are really making a game at all.  Its all just a front to cover for their true purpose, to develop a death ray which will let Greece take over the world.

I bet they'll make their death ray before Darkfall sadly :(

Aventurine was at E3 2006 with companies like SONY , Microsoft , NCsoft.. who gives a shit if they were at the same expo show. It proves nothing.

If their attendance at this Expo show was anything like their attendance at E3 2006 then it was a laugh considering they showed up at E3 2006 without their product on display and stood in an empty booth with a Darkfall poster behind them.

No I didn't say it. The producer Tasos did. Unfortunately even when it comes straight from the devs you don't want to believe it if it doesn't fit your agenda...  hilarious.
