The exact reason I told nobody to mention WoW is because the PvP is utterly horrible and of course not even close to FFA PvP. However there ARE alot of people out there, who having only ever played WoW are likely to suggest it. I was just making sure they didn't waste their time.

As for the poster who scoffed at the idea of skills playing a larger part than levels in AC1. Ask any decent Darktider, a lvl 100 could hold ground against a lvl 160 no worries if they knew what they were doing. I never said they'd get easy kills vs higher level players, but they CAN get kills if they play their cards right. Oh and as for my country being full of carebears. It's better than being from a country who sends the gank squad with leet gear and gets zerged by nekkid farmers.

Anyways, I can also understand why the FFA PvP servers in DAoC didn't really take, as that game was in all sense geared more towards RvR combat. (which I still find fairly boring) At the moment EvE is, from what I can tell the best embodiment of a FFA PvP game (Vanguard also qualifies aswell, except the death system and no real death penalty etc make the whole process pointless)

I too am waiting for Darkfall, but as pointed out, there is no real timeframe

Whoever posted the link for Planetside, thanks! That one had slipped my mind and I'm going to head over and have a look!

I think Shadowbane and EVE are the only ones with true FFA.

I don't think you can kill friendlies in PS, but it's been a long time since i played.

The PvP in LoTRO is going to be awesome, but I wouldn't try it until about a month from now, since there are not enough high level characters for it yet.   (The players and monsters level separately, and the player side has to be 40+ to play in the PvP zone). Once this gets going, it's gonna absolutely rock though.  Can't wait to try it.  It's not FFA thought.

True the PvP in LoTRO did sound quite fun and interesting  But I think i'll wait until it's been played and grilled on the forums before I make a decision there!

I think I might have a look at the Planetside trial. If I find it's not for me then I might head back to UO or AC or SB again

id say just the oppsite about darktide.

Til roma victor game along, darktide was well known as possibly the biggest disasters as far as community goes for an MMO.

Darktide was a virtual breeding ground for  griefers, exploiters, and people who generally caused harm to the game they played as they pursued whatever  desire popped into their heads at a given moment.

In addition AC was ,though one of the better designed MMOs in some ways, one of the worst in balance. And hence templates meant FAR more than player (skill).

And lastly just look at how low the population was in AC in general.

    Hardly a success story.

For FFA PvP I bought BF: 2142, no MMORPG can really stand up to that kind of intense slaughter. Also where else can you knife an enemy, take his dog tags then tea bag him as he dies?

You could try a text MUD. something like www.Avalong-rpg.com or www.Ironrealms.com.

These have an interesting take on FFA PvP, and if you can stomach the lack of graphics, some excellent features which today's MMO developers could learn a lot from. I would warn you of a very steep learning curve though.

EVE Online is the only current AAA MMORPG that has real FFA PvP.

There, you can lose everything you own, at any time.

Less likely in the safer sectors of space, but still possible.

more along the lines of encouraging no risk PvP.  and attacking just to do damage.

Ok Im confused,,,  doesnt FFA mean Free For All as in Deathmatch?  Any game that has teams/realms can not be a free for all.

Why would anyone play a MMOG just to kill team mates as well as enemys?

OH.. you don't mean you waht to be free to kill team mates you mean you want to be free to,, well grief.

If you want a FFA game go play an Deathmatch game, it's cheeper and you will get all the FFA action you can stand. MMOGS are for team players, yes even EVE does not promote FFA,. Yes you can attack your team mate without concord interveening but if you do you will soon be free of your corp and have a price on your head.

While there will be times that soloing is a necessity (no one of similar lvl available) the point of playing MMOGS is to be part of a group playing as a group.  FFAs (not talking PVP) have no business in any MMOG unless it is specifically designed with no us vrs them. In other words unless the game is designed for solo play only then FFA PVP is a determent.

Ok LeJohn, i'll give you a straighfoward and simple answer.

The reason I want to play FFA PvP is NOT because I want to slughter my teammates. Instead I would like the freedom to CHOOSE my own teammates through the creation of guilds and clans. I would also like the freedom to attack anyone I please (no not to grief, most people seem to wet themselves everytime the notion of FFA comes up) but I really don't like the idea of "Oh no he just came and stole my mobs/quest items/IG girlfriend, It's a shame he's on my side!".

UO - EvE - L2 - DaOC (was tempted but heard the community was dead) - ShadowBane - Vanguard
If anyone knew of any games that I've overlooked and should try, I would greatly appreciate any feedback whatsoever!
    Thanks!
You could try out "Asherons Call", But that game is rather old but had the best FFA PvP on Darktide server.

Good god, I forgot to put AC:DT on the list of games I've played. And of course it is by far the greatest of all of them, the very reason that pretty much every other PvP game leaves me unsatisfied!

How is the DT population going at the moment anyhow?

Without having any suggestions, as most if not all available options have been mentioned by now i just have to add that.

    ...dreams of Fallout Online.....

FFA PvP is the most fun type of gaming, one large requisite though is that you enjoy PvP to start with, the other big requisite is that the game was designed from the begining as a FFA PvP, or as other put it 100% open PvP, making FFA PvP servers for games that were clearly not designed as such only managed to promote a distorted image of this kind of playstyle to the gaming industry, who on the other hand resolved into adobting more and more restrictive PvP designs.

I can hardly think of a more golden example of this kind of game then pre-Trammel UO, the only reason that the gaming industry got the impression that no PvP was good was because in old time UO many were in that didnt fulfill requisite number one.

About Griefing and PvP, many tend to think that these are the same but they aren't, griefing is about harrasing other players in game where their victims have no way by game mechanics to avoid or stop him, the more restrictive PvP a game has the more it promotes griefing, golden example of this was EQ.

one of the best FFA games ive played is Conquer Online, a free game but now ruined by mass-real money buying.  if you were a max level (130) character you had the potential to kill entire parties of people if you were good enough.  the game is still alive, but with the amount of hacking, and real money buying idiots who pretty much get gear you work months for getting it in 3 days...it just destroys the point of hte game.

Nice post Darraess! It is true that a game must designed specifically for FFA PvP to be able to survive. AC:DT was in many way a fluke as the game engine worked well for both the normal PvE servers and the single PvP server (however years of balancing/tweaking buffs and weapons kept the balance tipping between classes).

I also havn't checked out Conquer Online, I will go have a look at the website etc right now
