oh man when i hear Richard Gariott... and this game his working on... my head feels light and i start breathing heavily
The Lord, The founder, you can even call him the FATHER of ALL MMORPG's
I'm so going to buy this game on day of release, hell i'll even get a new computer system to play
I have high hopes for this game. Just because this one man is developing it. Its going to smash all new mmo genre and make it a benchmark just you wait.
Hmm... My dear friends this game have nothing special (its another lame mmorpg) but it wont fail only cause of Richard Garriott and NCsoft names, strange isnt? I've played it and my rank i 2! NO MOTIVATION TO CONTINUE!
Garriott's my sovereign lord i'm his loyal yeoman. He can do whatever He wants I'll follow him to the deepest room of hells I play Ultimas since I was like 10. Knowing that the game is Garriott's TR adds to game goodness..
I'm sure alot of people felt the same about brad mcquaid until he released vanguard. The two have a few things in common.
Brad McQuaid is from Everquest 1 and is heralded as its father.
Richard Garriott is from Ultima Online and considered it's father.
Brad McQuaid left an evil corporation and started his own company.
Richard Garriott left an evil corporation and started his own company.
Similarities end there...
Brad McQuaid took a 30 million dollar budget, and decided to create the "second most expensive MMO" ever without a single revenue stream. They spent a bulk of the money buying the rights to the game away from Microsoft, and entered a co-publishing agreement with SOE rather than outright allowing themselves to be acquired then, which would've been better then since it's happening anyway.
Richard Garriott conceptualized Tabula Rasa, and even began working on it, but he also made Destination Games synonymous with NCSoft in North America. Garriott effectively created a premise where he could nearly scrap the entire first iteration of the game and do it over; something Sigil needed to do themselves but couldn't, and eventually ended up releasing early due to lack of cash.
I guess in short, one was quite foolish and one behaved as you'd expect from a responsible figurehead. Garriott hasn't done anything yet comparable to McQuaid's mistakes.
You sir are a God among men.
Being able to see the irony in this industry will get you far should you choose to work in it. Sort of like being able to predict stock market fluctuations and working in an investment firm. Priceless talent

If the comparison points out just one thing to me...While Brad is a creative genious...he has no business sence and even less leadership abilities to run a massive endeavor. He should have brought Smedley onboard from the start to make the "tough" choices. If that would have happend I believe Vanguard would have lived up to its hype from "gold" and not a year from now.
I say it was a good decision because it worked on me.... I was unaware that Richard Garriott was heading up this project and had not interest in TR until I read this very post.
Maybe there is hope for the future of MMO's after all!
