IRC?

CHAT!

If your going to form a pre-beta guild, your going to need more then a loose collection of uninteresting forums where the same uninteresting speculative topics will get discussed again and again. Your going to need a place where members can park themselves, get to know other members and perhaps form some sort of community. To start with, a chat room, like IRC. Where people can discuss/rant/rave. IRC has kept the most battered beta communitys alive and its what every pre-beta guild needs to cling to if they have any hope of surviving the beta boredom.

Some of my best moments are spent in such channels.

Ive spent about 50 mins on these forums, and ive yet to see a guild that promotes an IRC channel. I'd like to bum with a few Warhammer nerds, if your guild has an IRC chan, lemme know and ill pop by.

My guild uses XFire to chat. But then again, my guild has been together since 1998, so we aren't your normal guild.

So, just to prove my own idiocy I'll ask you what the difference between IRC and Ventrilo/Teamspeak is?

And isn't forums made for ranting/discussing/raving?

  •  Before I take any guild serius I always check out for these following things. First is, Does the guild have a good webpage with forums. A local webpage with the current news and a forum to discuse  various things. The other thing is does the guild have a prober Ventrilo or teamspeak server. Communication is a must today in all sort of games either be it a RPG, RTS or MMORPG. You need to talk in real time with ya mates. Also a IRC (Internet Relay channel) is very important, but normal its enough with a single on the server for trading, talking etc.

Why an IRC type scripts when there are so many other products out there that wont eat up a web pages bandwidth such as any one of the IMers out there? Most at our site, for the time being, get along quite well with only a BB and out IM's. We will be hooking up Vent as the game gets closer but for right now everything works quite well.

I am laying the foundation for a guild as I write this and I completely agree with the OP's post.  I'm taking it a step further and working on a 3rd party tool to incorporate even easier communication between members (irc, im, guild management).  I'm aware that there are tools capable of doing this but I feel they are too bloated for my specific needs.  Far too often do I see guilds starting and disbanding shortly thereafter because of lack of communication between members.

    A game to play?

Maybe its just me, but it seems a bit early to be forming up guilds for WAR.... (especially new ones)

but..the MMORPG world is a bit slow, so perhaps its something fun to do until a new game comes along...
